The visionary filmmaker behind A24's I Saw the TV Glow (2024) is back with another mind-bending twist on the horror genre.
The new teaser for Jane Schoenbrun's Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, debuting exclusively with Entertainment Weekly, offers a first look at the trippy horror film within a horror film starring Hacks' Hannah Einbinder and The X-Files' Gillian Anderson.
Described as "funnier and grislier" than their previous project — which followed two high schoolers, played by Justice Smith and Jack Haven, who bond over their favorite fictional TV show — Schoenbrun's new movie involves a fictional, once-popular horror film series that's running out of steam.

"After years of slapdash sequels and waning fandom, the Camp Miasma slasher franchise is handed over to an enthusiastic young director for resurrection," reads the official synopsis. "But when she visits the original movie's star, a now-reclusive actress shrouded in mystery, the two women fall into a blood-soaked world of desire, fear, and delirium."
Based on the teaser, Einbinder appears to be that starry-eyed filmmaker, while Anderson takes on the mysterious "final girl" from Camp Miasma's past.
"There is a hole at the bottom of the lake where the movies come from," Anderson intones to her costar in the teaser, adding ominously, "He always comes back."
After pausing to consider, a befuddled Einbinder replies, "What?"

Eva Victor (Sorry, Baby), Zach Cherry (Severance), Sarah Sherman (Saturday Night Live), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Scream 7), and Jack Haven (I Saw the TV Glow) also star, among others.
Produced by Mubi and Brad Pitt's Plan B, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is the third film from Schoenbrun, following TV Glow and We're All Going to the World's Fair (2021). Like their previous films, Camp Miasma promises to explore trans identity through the lens of queer horror.

In a profile for The New Yorker, Schoenbrun noted their fascination with gender deviance in horror, citing characters such as Psycho's Norman Bates and The Silence of the Lambs' Buffalo Bill as having "created and codified an idea of transness as monstrous." The new film, the profile teased, would both critique and honor that history.
Schoenbrun has also described it as "essentially a movie about learning to enjoy sex after transition."
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma hits theaters in the U.S. and Canada on Aug. 7, with additional territories to follow.
