For Béla Fleck, politics aren't really his jam.
In a Jan. 6 statement shared on social media, the Grammy-winning banjo player and bluegrass musician revealed that he is canceling a trio of performances at The Trump Kennedy Center, formerly known as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, amid mounting political tensions over the venue.
Fleck, known for his genre-blending fusion of bluegrass, jazz and folk, was scheduled to perform alongside the National Symphony Orchestra for the center's "American Mosaic" concerts on Feb. 19 and Feb. 21-22. The orchestra's principal clarinet player, Lin Ma, will perform in his place, according to The Trump Kennedy Center's official website.
"I have withdrawn from my upcoming performance with the NSO at The Kennedy Center," Fleck, 67, wrote in his statement. "Performing there has become charged and political, at an institution where the focus should be on the music."

The renowned performing arts center has come under scrutiny within the last month after the White House announced it was renaming the center to honor President Donald Trump and his contributions to the venue's reconstruction.
The Trump Kennedy Center's board of trustees voted unanimously on the name change on Dec. 18, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement at the time. The board, which Trump chairs, is made up mostly of members handpicked by the president.
However, an official name change appears to require action from Congress. A law passed in 1964, months after President John F. Kennedy's assassination, established the construction of "a building to be designated as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts." The law did not grant the board authority to change its name.
"I look forward to playing with the NSO another time in the future when we can together share and celebrate art," Fleck concluded his post.
USA TODAY has reached out to the White House for comment.

Trump's Kennedy Center president slams Bela Fleck for canceling concerts
Fleck's cancellation at The Trump Kennedy Center struck a sour note with the venue's top leadership.
"You just made it political and caved to the woke mob who wants you to perform for only Lefties," Trump Kennedy Center President Richard Grenell wrote in a Jan. 6 statement on X. "This mob pressuring you will never be happy until you only play for Democrats."
Fleck isn't the only musician to draw the ire of The Trump Kennedy Center.
In a Dec. 26 letter, Grenell threatened jazz musician Chuck Redd, who pulled out of a Christmas Eve performance in protest of the venue's name change, with a demand of "$1 million in damages" for the cancellation, which he called a "political stunt."
"The Trump Kennedy Center believes all people are welcome — Democrats and Republicans and people uninterested in politics," Grenell concluded his Jan. 6 post. "We want performers who aren't political — who simply love entertaining everyone regardless of who they voted for."

Chuck Redd cancels Kennedy Center show: Trump-Kennedy Center demands $1M for musician's 'political stunt'
In a follow-up statement to USA TODAY, Fleck acknowledged that while performing with the National Symphony Orchestra had "been a dream for me for many years," performing at The Trump Kennedy Center has become a "less and less musically- and artistically-based situation and more of a highly politicized and divisive one."
"It's a no-win situation for me," Fleck added. "If I had played the concert, my left-leaning friends and fans would be very disappointed in me. Canceling now means my right-leaning friends and fans will be disappointed in me."
Despite the political fallout, Fleck remained optimistic about a musical reconciliation with the National Symphony Orchestra.
"I hope someday I will have another chance to collaborate with the NSO," Fleck said. "But if not, it was my decision, and I will accept the consequences."
