CNBC anchor Becky Quick is opening up about her daughter's once-private health battle.
In a new interview with People, Quick, 53, revealed that her 9-year-old daughter Kaylie had been diagnosed with SYNGAP1. The condition, which can cause a wide array of neurological problems, can result in seizures or difficulty with communication and social interaction, according to Medline. It causes an individual to produce only about half of the SynGAP protein needed for brain development.
"I would say that it was probably around 8 months when I realized she wasn't hitting her milestones," Quick told the outlet. "Sometimes her eyes would cross. You just kind of know as a mom that there's something going on."

She said they "started working with therapists immediately" after detailing a visit to the pediatrician, which sparked concern. "[They] helped Kaylie with her ability to roll over, with getting fluid motions, with eventually being able to walk and lots of things. But we also noticed some other things that were going on."
It was de novo, a genetic disease, caused by a mutation that occurs for the first time in an individual, rather than being inherited from either parent. "It just happens sometimes at conception," said the journalist, who shares two children with husband Matt Quayle.
"It was scary. I think it's kind of universal from other parents I've talked to, either who have kids with this disease or other diseases. You end up kind of blaming yourself," said Quick, who said her daughter was diagnosed around 3 years old. "You sort of think, 'Was it because I was drinking decaf coffee when I was pregnant? Is it because I kept coloring my hair?'"

Through it all, Quick told the outlet she had to turn that part of her life off at work. The "Squawk Box" host said the topic was too emotional to bring into her public-facing persona.
"It's hard to know who to talk to and who to lean on," she said. "You feel like nobody else understands." Quick told People, however, that her decision to go public with her daughter's condition was aimed at spreading awareness and hopefully finding a cure. Her status as a public person might help, she mused.
"I started to realize that so many of us in these different communities are kind of walking that same path in a very lonely way," she told the outlet. "If we could get the word out and kind of connect some of these communities so that they could learn best practices, and they all didn't have to just reinvent the wheel on what should we be doing in terms of working towards a cure or in terms of getting help for our kids, that we could learn from each other along the way."
Quick said her home network has recently launched CNBC Cures, an initiative dedicated to raising awareness about Americans living with rare diseases.
"I want people to understand and raise awareness of people like our kids that may look a little differently or act a little differently, but they're just kids too," she said.
