"I wanted to do this because it scared the s--t out of me," she told Broadway Buzz in the summer of 2025. "Usually the things I pick are the things that I know are going to challenge me. It wouldn't go away. And because it wouldn't leave me, I thought, I think I am going to have to do it.

The play has been adapted for the stage by Kip Williams. Williams also adapted the Tony Award-nominated The Picture of Dorian Gray, for which Sarah Snook earned a Best Actress Tony. However, with the production currently putting the finishing touches on the show to be ready for previews on February 4, Erivo won't be attending the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, Jan. 11.

Erivo was nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, for her role as Elphaba in Wicked: For Good. The other nominees in the category are Emma Stone (Bugonia), Amanda Seyfried (The Testament of Ann Lee), Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I'd Kick You), and newcomer Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another).

Erivo was also a Golden Globe nominee for the character in 2025's Wicked. With her second nomination, she broke a record, becoming the first Black woman to receive two nominations for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

"It's very special," she told Variety upon discovering the news. "I hope there are many more to come, not just for me, but for other Black women. I hope it's just the beginning. What a wonderful thing to do that and be a part of changing history a little bit and hopefully open up doors for someone else too."

Besides Erivo's nomination, her Wicked: For Good's co-star, Ariana Grande, is up for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture. The film is also nominated for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, as well as two Original Songs: "No Place Like Home" and "The Girl in the Bubble."
