Moanas character depiction in liveaction and animation from Disneys Moana

Catherine Laga’aia as Moana; Moana in the 2016 animated film. Credit:

*Moana* is back on the big screen, though not quite as you remembered.

It’s only been 10 years since the 2016 animated original became a global success and modern classic, but now Disney’s new interpretation of the tale brings some of your favorite characters to life in both live-action and photo-realistic animation.

“How do you honor this? How do you say ‘we love it too’ and make it something that can be a companion and not try to be the same thing, but also trust what works?” director Thomas Kail told **. “The opportunity to have flesh and blood and have human beings tell the story and sing these songs and be in this world, there’s something so fundamentally different about that experience of watching and feeling that.”

As in the original film, *Moana* follows the titular character (now played by Catherine Laga’aia) as she sets off across the sea to save her village. Along the way, she encounters new enemies, learns her own strength, and, of course, becomes besties with the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson).

With *Moana* now playing in theaters, check out all the live-action characters in the new film side by side with the animated originals below.

Catherine Laga’aia as Moana

Catherina Laga'aia as Moana in Disney's live-action MOANA, MOANA (2016) Moana (voice of Auliʻi Cravalho)

Catherina Laga’aia as the live-action Moana; Moana in ‘Moana’ (2016).

Catherine Lagaʻaia succeeds Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana in the live-action retelling. The daughter of Chief Tui on the island of Motunui, the young seafaring heroine is chosen by the ocean to find demigod Maui and return the stolen heart of the nature goddess Te Fiti before the world is consumed in fire and ash.

“The way that Catherine sings ‘How Far I’ll Go’ is inherently different than the way Auliʻi did,” Kail teased to EW of the music to come. “I think that’s what also is a reason [for the movie] to be. How would you do this? How would you experience that?”

Kail later elaborated further on the decision to cast a new actress in the role, telling EW, “[Cravalho] really wanted this to be Catherine’s. So it was never a major conversation about that idea.”

Fittingly, Cravalho duets with Laga’aia on a new Lin-Manuel Miranda song, “Along the Way,” which plays over the end credits.

Dwayne Johnson as Maui

Dwayne Johnson as the live-action Maui; Maui in 'Moana' (2016)

Dwayne Johnson as the live-action Maui; Maui in ‘Moana’ (2016).

Maui is a hero with many titles: shapeshifter, demigod of the wind and sea, hero of men and women. And now he’ll remind us again in live-action.

Dwayne Johnson becomes the first Disney actor to play the same role in both animated and live-action versions of a character. The actor previously spoke with EW about transforming himself into Maui for the live-action *Moana*, describing “the 40 pounds of prosthetics and hair and body.”

“It was grueling because of the suit and how hot it was,” he said. “Wait till you see pictures. In between takes, there’s literally five, six people, all [with] fans, opening me up, pulling my hair back.”

John Tui as Chief Tui

John Tui plays Chief Tui, Moana’s no-nonsense father and leader of the people of Motunui. He’s someone who does not want his daughter sailing out towards the dangers beyond the reef.

Temuera Morrison (*The Mandalorian*, *The Book of Boba Fett*) voiced the character in the two animated movies, while *Hamilton* star Christopher Jackson supplied his singing voice for the first.

Frankie Adams as Sina

Frankie Adams takes over the role of Sina, Moana’s mother, from Tony winner Nicole Scherzinger. Sina acts as the mediating force between Moana and Tui when they butt heads over their visions for the future, and she cares deeply for her people. What’s more, she understands when Moana takes action, even though its against her husband’s wishes.

Rena Owen as Gramma Tala

Rena Owen now portrays Moana’s grandmother, Tala, a role previously voiced by Rachel House in the animated movies.

Grandma Tala is a free spirit and revered matriarch of her family with a strong connection to both nature and her peoples’ history. She plays a key role in Moana’s journey, as the two share a deep connection that transcends the typical bounds of human nature.

WASHINGTON, July 10 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he would not sign a bipartisan housing affordability bill that he had called “a big ‌yawn," but the measure can become law without his signature.

Trump said in a social media post that he was withholding his signature "in PROTEST over the fact that the United States Senate is not capable of passing THE SAVE AMERICA ACT."

The housing bill was a rare of instance of bipartisan agreement on major legislation in the deeply divided Congress.

Among its ‌main provisions are waiving or speeding up environmental reviews for home construction projects and placing a cap on the number of already constructed single-family homes that big Wall Street investors can own.

Trump abruptly canceled a June 24 signing ceremony for the bill to pressure Republicans into passing the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and create a national voter database using state records. Trump has long falsely claimed widespread fraud in U.S. elections.

Because the bill was passed by both houses of Congress, it could become law whether Trump signs it or not. After receiving the bill, Trump has 10 days to sign or veto the bill, and if he does neither, it would become law without his signature.

On June 29, Trump called the bill "a big yawn" compared to the voting legislation.

The latest evening news ratings are in, and the summer started hot for ABC World News Tonight with David Muir, the only show to see a rise in total viewers and the key Adults 25-54 demographic.

It should be noted that the Fourth of July holiday led to scheduling shifts across all three major networks for the week of June 29; the ratings data is therefore based on different days. ABC News’ average is based on the Monday and Tuesday broadcasts; CBS News’ is based on Monday to Wednesday; and NBC News’ is based on Monday to Thursday.

In addition, NBC Nightly News‘ regular host, Tom Llamas, was off last week and replaced by Haillie Jackson.

According to AdWeek, citing national live+same-day big data plus program ratings from Nielsen, ABC World News Tonight averaged 8.128 million total viewers and 964,000 demo viewers for the week of June 29. This was up 8 percent in total viewers and up 1 percent in the key demo compared to the week before.

Compared to the same period in 2025, World News Tonight was up 13 percent in total viewers but down 3 percent in the demo.

NBC Nightly News ranked second, averaging 6.16 million total viewers and 856,000 demo viewers. This was down 3 percent in total viewers and down 4 percent in the demo compared to the previous week. However, the show was up 12 percent in total viewers and the demo when compared to the same period in 2025.

Meanwhile, CBS Evening News with Tony Dokoupil fell back below the 4 million benchmark for the week of June 29. The show averaged 3.765 million total viewers and 501,000 demo viewers. This was down 6 percent in total viewers and down 13 percent in the demo compared to the week prior.

However, there was better news in the year-over-year comparison, as CBS Evening News grew by 1 percent in total viewers and 8 percent in the key demo compared to the same period in 2025.

Former U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao returned to the United States from China this week after her husband, Sen. Mitch McConnell, was hospitalized on June 14.

Chao's travel during McConnell's hospitalization fueled unfounded conspiracy theories online.

More: McConnell's health raises questions amid hospitalization. What we know

"The secretary was on a long-planned trip in China to support her family's philanthropic endeavors," a spokesperson for Chao said in a statement to The Courier Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network. "During the trip, she met with a number of people, including the U.S. ambassador. The senator's health did not warrant an immediate return to the U.S."

Chao, who headed the Transportation Department during President Donald Trump's first term and served as Labor secretary under President George W. Bush, has been married to McConnell for decades. Days after he was hospitalized, on June 17, the Chinese embassy in Washington, DC, released a photograph of Chao seated beside Chinese Vice President Han Zheng before a grand painting of the Great Wall in Beijing.

Chao's staff did not indicate whether she'd been in contact with McConnell since returning home, according to the CBS affiliate WLKY in Louisville. She left for the trip to China on June 12, just two days before McConnell was hospitalized, according to the outlet.

Also amid the swirling news cycle, the Kentucky senator's youngest daughter, Porter McConnell, deleted her social media account on X, according to the Independent.

Here's the latest on Mitch McConnell's health, calls for transparency

Keely Doll, Louisville Courier JournalFri, July 10, 2026 at 3:00 PM UTC

10

U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell has not been seen publicly since his June 14 hospitalization, raising concerns and questions about the 84-year-old's health and return to office.

The former Senate Majority Leader has been hospitalized for nearly a month, with few statements released about his condition or recovery timeline.

Here's everything we know as of July 10.

What is the latest on Sen. Mitch McConnell?

McConnell was hospitalized on June 14, according to a statement from his office.

On June 30, journalist Desiree Townsend first shared on social media audio from a D.C. emergency services dispatch, which described medical personnel being called to a residence McConnell has used near the U.S. Capitol to assist someone who could be in cardiac arrest.

On July 10, CNN published a video that allegedly shows McConnell on a stretcher being led from his D.C. home into an ambulance.

McConnell's team has stated the senator "continues to improve," though he remains hospitalized and was absent from voting for the remainder of June, before a recess that ends July 13.

Who is calling for transparancy around McConnell's health?

As McConnell's absence reaches the one-month mark, both Democrats and Republicans are calling for more transparency around the senator's status, including Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who publicly called for an update on the senator's health on July 8.

The following day, U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-Indiana, said it is fair for Beshear to request an update "so the people of Kentucky get transparency on if their Senator is able to serve."

"... Republicans should be holding our own party accountable instead of tiptoeing around the truth," Stutzman wrote in a social media post. "Mitch McConnell’s constituents deserve to know where he is at, the fact they don’t is discouraging and concerning. There is too much at stake for America in the Senate not to know."

Who has spoken with McConnell since his hospitalization?

Following rising concerns about the senator's health, several top Republicans confirmed they've spoken to McConnell on the phone, with others saying they've texted with him since his hospitalization.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-South Dakota, and Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, R-Wyoming, said they spoke to McConnell on the phone on July 6 and 7, respectively. Scott Jennings, a commentator and longtime McConnell adviser, also confirmed he spoke with the senator but declined to call him back while live on CNN.

In a post on X on July 7, Jennings said McConnell was still recovering, but he hoped to see him back in the Senate soon. He also provided details about what his 20-minute conversation with the senator entailed.

"We talked for just shy of 20 minutes … about IRAN, UKRAINE, the unfolding situation in MAINE, my visit to the TR Presidential Library, and even a little bit of Senate history," Jennings wrote.

Other officials have said they've texted with the senator, including U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie, R-Kentucky. While speaking with reporters on July 8, Guthrie said he's praying for McConnell's recovery and that the longtime senator has served as both a friend and mentor.

“I do believe he’s going to recover and I hope he’s back in Washington soon,” Guthrie said, referring to McConnell's hopeful return to Congress. “We need him back.”

Where is McConnell's wife, Elaine Chao?

With little information available on McConnell's health, eyes online turned to his wife, former U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, who was abroad in China when the senator was hospitalized.

Chao was photographed in China on June 17, meeting with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng.

"The secretary was on a long-planned trip in China to support her family's philanthropic endeavors," a spokesperson for Chao said in a statement to The Courier Journal. "During the trip, she met with a number of people, including the U.S. ambassador. The senator's health did not warrant an immediate return to the U.S."

What happens if there's a Senate vacancy in Kentucky?

With McConnell not running for reelection, Democratic candidate Charles Booker and U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, the GOP nominee, will face off for the full-term seat in November.

But if a vacancy occurs before McConnell's term ends, Kentucky law says the seat can only be filled by a special election, which must be called for by the governor.

Kentucky statutes do not lay out a timeline on when exactly the special election must be held, but there are several time requirements to give voters, candidates and political parties a chance to organize prior to an election.

Once the governor issues a proclamation, a copy must be sent to the sheriffs of each county at least 63 days before the election. Then, political parties or organizations can file petitions and certificates of nomination, with a deadline of 56 days before the election.

If McConnell does not return to office, a special election could be held on the same day as the general election, provided it's called for before Sept. 1.

Swift and Kelce’s vow exchange lasted about 40 minutes

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce embraced several timeless wedding traditions when they got married on July 3 — but they also put their own spin on the celebration.

Swift wore a custom Christian Dior Haute Couture gown, the couple exchanged heartfelt vows, and the Grammy winner even tossed her bouquet, which Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Trey Smith’s sister, Ashley Smith, caught part of.

Beyond those classic moments, however, the celebration was anything but conventional. Rather than saying “I do” in a ballroom or private estate, the couple transformed New York City’s Madison Square Garden into a fairytale-inspired garden, invited guests through digital invitations that many initially mistook for spam and entertained attendees with reception games and luxury raffle prizes.

Here are seven unconventional details from Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding.

Rather than mailing traditional paper invitations, Swift and Kelce seemingly opted for a fully digital approach. Guests received invitations via a link sent directly to their phones — a decision so unconventional that some attendees initially thought the messages were fake.

BBC Radio 1 host Greg James revealed on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show on July 8that he and his wife were convinced the invitation “could be a scam” until they arrived at the wedding.

Before they tied the knot, Swift and Kelce celebrated by giving back. A rep for Swift confirmed to PEOPLE that the couple donated $26 million to a variety of charitable organizations ahead of their big day.

The recipients included Food Bank For NYC, New York Cares, Brad Paisley and Kimberly Williams-Paisley’s The Store, Harvesters in Kansas City, Feeding America, ASPCA, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone and Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.

“We’re truly inspired by Taylor and Travis’s generosity to so many wonderful organizations, and extremely grateful that The Store is included among them,” Brad and Kimberly told PEOPLE of the donation in a statement at the time. “This gift will go a long way toward helping our neighbors facing food insecurity in Nashville. What a beautiful way to celebrate the beginning of a marriage!”

They said “I do” at Madison Square Garden

Instead of choosing a ballroom, estate or luxury hotel, Swift and Kelce exchanged vows at Madison Square Garden. While the iconic arena may seem like an unexpected wedding venue, it offered several advantages when it came to safety, security and privacy.

Guests who entered MSG didn’t find the sports arena they expected. Instead, the couple transformed the space into a fairytale-inspired garden filled with white chair covers, and ferns and trees that were brought inside to create a “forest” feel, insiders told PEOPLE.

“They have grass, carpets and canopies, and it looks like a place where you’d get married,” another source added.

Forgoing a traditional bridal party, the Grammy-winning singer asked her brother, Austin Swift, to serve as her “man of honor,” Swift’s rep confirmed to PEOPLE.

Kelce, meanwhile, had his older brother, Jason Kelce, by his side as best man.

Neither Kelce nor Swift had bridesmaids or groomsmen.

The couple’s vow exchange lasted about 40 minutes

Long, heartfelt vows took center stage during the ceremony, which was officiated by Adam Sandler. Swift and Kelce’s “vows were about 20 minutes each,” a source told PEOPLE, adding that each guest received an ivory handkerchief in case the ceremony brought tears.

The lace-trimmed keepsakes featured the couple’s monogram, wedding date and venue, along with the lyric, “So it’s gonna be forever ...” from Swift’s 2014 hit “Blank Space.”

George Stephanopoulos, who attended the wedding, told ABC News that “the ceremony was very great, moving.” He added that Sandler was “funny” as officiant and that the vows, which he said were kept in “little books,” were “real, vulnerable, serious and silly, deeply loving.”

Immediately following the ceremony, jumbotrons outside of MSG displayed the words, “JusT&T Married,” a nod to the bride and groom’s initials.

The wedding also included a lineup of A-list performers, including Stevie Nicks and Paul McCartney.

Instead of cutting into a traditional wedding cake, Swift and Kelce treated their roughly 1,000 guests to an elaborate dessert table.

According to TMZ, the spread featured about 30 different cakes, each topped with a unique 3D figure of the couple. A source also told PEOPLE that the display — which included Pop-Tarts, cookies, pastries and other sweets — was “a focal point” of the celebration.

Dancing wasn’t the only entertainment on the agenda. During the reception, guests were invited to play games to earn raffle tickets for a chance to win extravagant prizes.

Two unnamed guests told NBC News that the giveaways included designer handbags and even a vintage 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle. The classic car held special significance for the couple, as it’s the same make and model of the convertible Kelce drove away in with Swift after she attended her first Kansas City Chiefs game in September 2023, per the outlet.

While it’s unclear who won the Chevelle, Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill’s wife, Jackie Tranquill, shared in a since-deleted Instagram post that she walked away with a Chanel handbag from the brand’s latest collection, reportedly valued at $6,700.
