Will Aaron Rodgers retire? What Steelers QB has said about future

All good things must come to an end.

It's a fact of life and one that Aaron Rodgers' NFL career will meet sooner rather than later. The 42-year-old is in his 21st season as a pro, a season he hope ends with a second Super Bowl ring.

Rodgers has done it all on an individual level. He's a four-time NFL MVP. He has been to 10 Pro Bowls and named a first-team All-Pro four times. Despite that, Rodgers still only has the one Super Bowl to show for it.

He has been considered a controversial figure at times, but there's no denying Rodgers' greatness as one of the top quarterbacks in NFL history. Even with showing signs of age, he went 10-6 as a starter for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025, getting his team into the playoffs as the AFC North champion.

For the first time in a long time, there are no set number of games left before Rodgers faces a question about his future. It's win-or-go-home, with the chance that a loss might just be the end of an era for a legend.

Here's the latest on whether Rodgers plans to retire after the season.

Will Aaron Rodgers retire?

Rodgers hasn't indicated that he is 100% retiring after the 2025 season.

However, the quarterback hasn't been shy about sharing his thoughts about what the future holds. Rodgers discussed the potential for retirement during a June 24 appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show" after he signed with the Steelers.

"I'm pretty sure this is it (my last season)," Rodgers said. "That's why we just did a one-year deal. Steelers didn't need to put any extra years on that or anything. This was really about finishing with love and fun and peace for the career that I've had. I played 20 freaking years. It's been a long run and I've enjoyed it. What better place to finish than in one of the cornerstone franchises of the NFL?"

Of course, plans might change over the course of a season.

Ahead of the Steelers' final game of the regular season, Rodgers again talked about his future.

"I'm thinking about this week, but obviously I'm 42 years old and I'm on a one-year deal," Rodgers told reporters on Wednesday, Dec. 31. "So you know what the situation is. Whenever the season ends, I'll be a free agent. So that'll give me a lot of options if I still want to play. I mean, not a lot of options, but there'll be options, I would think, maybe one or two, if I decide I still want to play.

"I've enjoyed this experience, and everybody in Pittsburgh has been fantastic to me on and off the field," he added. "And it's really what I was hoping for this experience was, it's been even better than I was hoping."

That enjoyment could pave the way for Rodgers to have an extended stay in Pittsburgh if both sides agree to one. Even in a year where there feels like a finality to it all, nothing is truly over until the quarterback makes the announcement.

He is back in the playoffs for the first time since Jan. 22, 2022 and is just four wins away from capturing an elusive second Super Bowl.

The final chapters of Rodgers' career hasn't been written yet. Depending on how the postseason goes, perhaps there's a little more left in the story than initially thought.
