As fans tuned into the first major Today show broadcast of the new year on Jan. 5, 2026, they may have noticed that Guthrie's familiar face was missing alongside her co-anchor, Craig Melvin. The beloved host is off-screen because she is taking a planned break from the morning news show.
The Today show co-anchor has taken a brief hiatus from her post to rest and recover from vocal chord surgery in the new year. Guthrie previously announced on Dec. 19 that she'd be taking some time off to fully recuperate from the procedure — which centered around removing a polyp and nodules on her vocal chords.
"It's not a big, big deal, but I am going to have to have a surgery in the new year and be off for a couple of weeks, so this is my last day for a little while," she shared.
In order to fully recover, Guthrie must go on vocal rest and be "totally silent." Although she has not shared when she'll return to Today, Guthrie gave a hopeful update on Jan. 5.
Here's everything to know about where Savannah Guthrie is and updates on her planned surgery.

Guthrie is currently taking an absence from the Today show after undergoing vocal surgery in the new year.
"Some of you have noticed that my voice has been very scratchy and started to crack a little bit," Guthrie said on the Today show on Dec. 19. "Well, I have found out what it is. I have vocal nodules and I also have a polyp."
Guthrie jokingly added that some people may have thought that she'd been having "the world's longest head cold" because of her voice. However, she clarified that she's "really excited" that doctors found the issue and could fix it.
As part of her recovery period, Guthrie noted that she would have to be "totally silent" for at least a few weeks.
Her co-host Sheinelle Jones — who previously underwent the same surgery — gifted her a whiteboard to communicate and assured her that she would finally "have permission to be still."

Neither Guthrie nor NBC have officially commented on when she'll be returning to the anchoring chair. Prior to her absence, Guthrie estimated that she would "be off for a couple of weeks."
Although she hasn't appeared live on Today since then, she co-hosted a quick pre-recorded New Year's Day segment with Melvin, Al Roker and Carson Daly that aired on Jan. 1. In the pre-recorded segment, Guthrie thanked Today show viewers while wishing them a happy New Year.
"We're so happy to have you, we don't take it for granted," Guthrie shared. "Every year we like to kick things off with some gratitude for our Today show family, people who make these early mornings so much brighter and funnier and smarter and really make this show shine."

After the Jan. 5 broadcast aired, Guthrie reminded viewers that she was away on a planned leave and was recovering nicely.
She posted an Instagram selfie of her smiling while holding a whiteboard that read, "All good! Thanks for prayers and love!"
"See you soon!" she captioned the post.
Several of Guthrie's Today colleagues shared their love for her in the comments — including her former co-anchor Hoda Kotb who urged her to "feel better."

As Guthrie takes the necessary time to heal, her Today show colleagues are helping out by filling in for her. During the Jan. 5 broadcast, former 3rd Hour of Today co-host and new Today with Jenna and Sheinelle co-host Sheinelle Jones, took the reigns with Melvin.
"Sheinelle is in for Savannah, and we're wishing her a speedy recovery from her vocal chord surgery," Melvin announced at the beginning of the broadcast.
NBC has not disclosed if Jones will be filling in for Guthrie for the whole absence or if they'll be rotating through Today show anchors. Past colleagues who have stepped in include Saturday Today co-anchors Peter Alexander and Laura Jarrett, as well as Sunday Today host Willie Geist.
