Amazon MGM Studios has dropped a first look at Sophie Turner as Lara Croft in the new "Tomb Raider" television series, based on the popular video game franchise. In the photo, the "Game of Thrones" alum dons Lara's iconic shorts and top, complete with a pair of red sunglasses.
Prime Video released the photo while announcing that production on the show is now underway.
Turner is the latest star to step into the role that was previously played by Angelina Jolie in 2001's "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" and its 2003 sequel, "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider — The Cradle of Life." Most recently, Alicia Vikander played Lara Croft in the 2018 film "Tomb Raider."
"Fleabag" creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge is serving as creator and executive producer of Prime Video's "Tomb Raider," which also stars Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie and August Wittgenstein.

The "Tomb Raider" video game franchise, first launched in 1996 and following the adventures of archaeologist Lara Croft, has sometimes been compared to the "Indiana Jones" movies. There have continued to be new game entries into the present day, with a 2013 reboot, simply titled "Tomb Raider," being especially acclaimed.

"Tomb Raider" marks one of Turner's biggest roles since the 2019 finale of "Game of Thrones," the show that made her famous for her role as Sansa Stark. She was officially cast as Lara Croft in 2025.
"I am thrilled beyond measure, to be playing Lara Croft," Turner said last year. "She's such an iconic character, who means so much to so many — and I am giving everything I've got. They're massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands."

Waller-Bridge also previously said that it's "not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving," adding that "everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out … Croft is coming."

"Tomb Raider" continues a trend of new video game adaptations coming off the success of HBO's "The Last of Us" and the blockbuster films "A Minecraft Movie" and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie." Other upcoming video game adaptations include a "God of War" television series, which is also in the works at Prime Video.
