A HOMEOWNER'S association has restricted residents from parking certain vehicles in a garage near their homes.
The restriction isn't for people with just any vehicle, it specifically targets EV drivers.
The association informed homeowners living in Colorado's Decatur condominium that the EVs create increased fire risks.
An email went out informing residents about the EV ban in 2021, local news outlet Summit Daily reported.
The notice stated that the design of the property "creates increased fire risks if an (electric vehicle) fire happens in our garage."
"Several factors significantly increase time to extinguish an (electric vehicle) fire at Decatur," the email added.
"First, water will not extinguish a battery fire in an (electric vehicle), making a sprinkler system useless,
"Second, the enclosed design of our garage makes it problematic for firefighters to access the fire with the required amount of retardant."
The email the HOA sent to homeowners explained that the decision was made by the Decatur neighborhood's board of managers.
The ban was enforced after the board had been monitoring news about fire hazards from charging or parking electric vehicles in enclosed garages with attached dwellings.
While there are a handful of other parking spots to choose from outside the garage at Decatur, residents were enraged over the EV ban.
One local homeowner who owns an EV, Marissa Dailey, said it can be difficult to snag these spots during the busy seasons.
She said she would be less likely to drive her electric vehicle when her family comes to visit their condo because of the new ban.
The driver expressed having to opt to drive their gas-operated SUV instead.

Dailey said she would have no serious problems with the ban "if there was a legitimate risk assessment done" that showed safety issues.
The resident said she wouldn't want to lose her own car or condo to a fire – but that didn't seem to her to be the case.

She went on to note that the discussion with the fire district regarding EV-related fires appeared to be misconstrued.
Dailey stressed that she had no luck getting in touch with anyone on the homeowners association to share her concerns about how the ban would impact her personally.
