A prime national security aide to Vice President Mike Pence informed House impeachment investigators that President Donald Trump’s efforts to strain Ukraine to research his political opponents have been “uncommon and inappropriate,” and “shed some mild on attainable different motivations” for the president’s order to freeze army assist to the U.S. ally.

Jennifer Williams, who serves as Pence’s special adviser for Europe and Russia, advised investigators that she took notes while she listened in on Trump’s July 25 telephone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky from the White House State of affairs Room, including that she seen Trump’s requests for investigations as politically motivated.

“I found the precise references to be — to be more particular to the president in nature, to his private political agenda, as against a broader … overseas policy goal of the United States,” Williams stated, in line with a transcript of her closed-door deposition released Saturday.

The July 25 telephone name is at the middle of House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry.
