California Democrat: No reason for whistleblower to testify

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) on Sunday didn’t budge: The whistleblower who referred to as attention to President Donald Trump’s Ukraine name and spurred an impeachment inquiry doesn’t have to testify.

“I feel the Republicans are making a problem of anything that they assume will give them some gravitas,” the House Intelligence Committee member stated on ABC‘s “This Week.“ “The one thing that the whistleblower can say is that he was informed by different individuals concerning the telephone call. We've got the other individuals coming ahead to truly testify.”

Last week brought the discharge of transcripts from witness testimonies corroborating the whistleblower’s account. Some of that testimony strengthened allegations that the president requested Ukraine to research former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter in return for army assist.

With the inquiry going public in a matter of days, House Republicans on Saturday submitted an inventory of individuals they’d wish to query in the course of the inquiry, together with the whistleblower and Hunter Biden.

House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) on Saturday was adamant that the whistleblower’s testimony can be “redundant and unnecessary.” He also stated the inquiry wouldn't function a car for “the same sham investigation into the Bidens or 2016.”

On Sunday, Speier dismissed the notion that — even when lawmakers might assure the individual’s safety — the whistleblower should testify to appease Republicans apprehensive about what they say is an unequal and unfair course of.

“There are different witnesses the Republicans have requested that I might assume the chairman is going to make obtainable to testify. Tim Morrison is one. Kurt Volker is another,” she stated. “We need to stay targeted on the Ukraine call.”

Afterward ABC, Texas Rep. Mac Thornberry delivered the Republican counter-response, saying that no matter occurs with the inquiry going ahead may have a partisan "taint" and might be acquired with "intense skepticism." A president to asking a overseas chief to research a political rival is inappropriate, he added, nevertheless it shouldn't be an impeachable offense.

"There's a cause we let murderers and robbers and rapists go free when their due process rights have been violated," Thornberry stated. "We consider the integrity of the system, the integrity of the constitution, the integrity of the processes underneath our legal system, is more necessary than the result of one specific case."

Still, when asked whether Hunter Biden and the whistleblower ought to be requested to testify, Thornberry hedged.

"Like most members of Congress, I've not been within the room for all these hearings and secret proceedings. So, I do not actually know who the right witnesses should be," he stated. "I feel what Jackie Speier stated is true: The whistle-blower principally has third-hand info."
