For obvious reasons, I am often asked to write about mothers and daughters. I am also asked why the topic is so sticky and so important. The closest I've gotten to a theory is this: We make art about our mothers because they are so important to our survival. Our mothers are our first relationship, and often our most primal. Our mothers bring us into the world, and they impart to us more than just genes.

Joan Didion famously wrote that "we tell ourselves stories in order to live," but I might amend that to say we tell ourselves stories about our mothers in order to make sense of ourselves. I had to write about my own mother because I couldn't make sense of myself without looking at her.

How to Lose Your Mother: A Daughter's Memoir

$13.55 at amazon.com

It's a relationship that has fueled so much of what's in the zeitgeist today. Broadway's Liberation tells a daughter's story about her mother's political awakening; Gish Jen's latest book, Bad Bad Girl, follows a fraught parent-offspring relationship; Kristin Scott Thomas's 2025 directorial debut, My Mother's Wedding, was inspired by memories of her own mom. The recent third season of the Netflix series Ginny & Georgia, about a woman and her teenage daughter, hit the number one spot in the streamer's top 10 when it was released in June.

The women in these pages are a force; they are also the women we want our daughters to be. You can bet that the relationships they have with their mothers shaped the way they interact with the world, as well as their art. Arundhati Roy's memoir, Mother Mary Comes to Me, includes this line about hers: "She was my shelter and my storm."

Someday my daughter will write about me, even if she never actually writes about me. I will seep into her stories, into her scholarship, into her grocery lists. We can't escape our mothers. They are everywhere, and perhaps most important, they are in us, in our very DNA. My memoir is called How to Lose Your Mother, and through writing it I learned, you can't.

The Twists of Belle Burden's Memoir Aren't Its Only Surprise

Burden's book, Strangers, lays bare the end of her marriage. Here, she and her mother, Amanda Burden, the daughter of the legendary Babe Paley, ponder the types of bonds that are unbreakable. By David Netto

elle Burden has made exactly two public statements in the last three years, and maybe zero before that. Her writing has twice appeared in the New York Times, each time with consequential results. The first occasion was an essay published in 2023 that has grown into a book, Strangers: A Memoir of Marriage, released this January. The second was a reclamation of her grandmother Babe Paley's legacy from Ryan Murphy's portrayal of her in Feud: Capote vs. The Swans. We await the book on that. Read More

Meet the Mother of the Mitford Sisters

There are perhaps no more notorious daughters than the Mitford girls. The six aristocratic Brits—they've been called Diana the Fascist, Jessica the Communist, Unity the Hitler-Lover, Nancy the Novelist, Deborah the Duchess, and Pamela the unobtrusive poultry connoisseur—scandalized England in the early 20th century with rebellious behavior, high-profile (and often disastrous) romances, and the decidedly non-U habit of making headlines. Wherever did they get that defiant spirit? Meet the Mitford mater familias By Rachel Trethewey

Sydney Bowles's attitude to marriage and motherhood was complicated. A few days before she wed David Freeman-Mitford, the future 2nd Baron Redesdale, a married friend told her what to expect on her wedding night. Sydney was so shocked she replied, "A gentleman would never do anything like that." Nor was she maternal, dismissing most of her babies as "too ugly for words." Once it was her six daughters' turn to enter the marriage market, she tried to find them suitable husbands. However, in her somewhat autobiographical novel The Pursuit of Love, Nancy, Sydney's eldest daughter, described the standards of chaperonage of Aunt Sadie, her mother's stand-in, as positively "medieval." Her daughters were never allowed to be alone with a young man under any circumstances unless they were engaged to him. Read More

LONDON (AP) — The former Prince Andrew has moved out of his long-time home on crown-owned land near Windsor Castle earlier than expected after the latest release of documents from the U.S. investigation of Jeffrey Epstein revived questions about his friendship with the convicted sex offender.

The 65-year-old brother of King Charles III, now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, left the Royal Lodge in Windsor on Monday and is now living on the king's Sandringham estate in eastern England, a person familiar with the matter said. British media reported that Mountbatten-Windsor will live temporarily at Wood Farm Cottage while his permanent home on the estate undergoes repairs.

Mountbatten-Windsor's move to Sandringham was announced in October when Charles stripped him of his royal titles amid continuing revelations about his links to Epstein. But the former prince was expected to remain at Royal Lodge, where he has lived for more than 20 years, until the spring.

The expedited departure came as Thames Valley Police announced that they were investigating allegations that Epstein flew a second woman to Britain to have sex with Mountbatten-Windsor. A lawyer for the alleged victim told the BBC that the encounter took place in 2010 at Royal Lodge.

The allegations are separate from those made by Virginia Giuffre, who claimed she had been trafficked to Britain to have sex with Andrew in 2001, when she was just 17. Giuffre died by suicide last year.

Mountbatten-Windsor has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing in his relationship with Epstein. He hasn't responded publicly to the new trafficking allegation.

Mountbatten-Windsor features a number of times in the 3 million pages of documents the U.S. Department of Justice released on Friday.

Correspondence between Epstein and someone believed to be Mountbatten-Windsor show Epstein offering to arrange a date between the man and a 26-year-old Russian woman. The man, who signs off simply as "A," later suggests that he and Epstein have dinner in London, either at a restaurant or Buckingham Palace.

The former prince's residence at Royal Lodge has long been a point of contention between the king and his brother.

After Charles became king in 2022, he tried to force his brother to move into a smaller house on the Windsor Castle estate. Mountbatten-Windsor refused, citing a lease on the property that ran through 2078.

But the pressure for him to leave became irresistible in October as lawmakers and the public raised questions about the favorable terms of Mountbatten-Windsor's lease on the 30-room house and surrounding estate, which is managed by the Crown Estate.

The Crown Estate controls properties throughout the country that are technically owned by the monarchy but are managed for the benefit of British taxpayers.

By contrast, the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk is the personal property of the king.

Dave Coulier on 'Good Morning America'

Dave Coulier is cancer-free again.

The Full House actor revealed on World Cancer Day Wednesday, Feb. 4 that he's in remission after undergoing an aggressive treatment for tongue cancer. The happy news comes nearly a year after Coulier was declared he was cancer-free from Stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

"It's been a roller coaster ride for sure," the comedian said during an appearance on Good Morning America. "I'm in remission with both cancers. And what a journey this has been."

Coulier, 66, first went public with his tongue cancer diagnosis in December, months after sharing the update that he been cleared of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Doctors had discovered he had p16 squamous carcinoma, a type of head and neck cancer, when they noticed a flare-up where the tongue meets the throat during a six-month checkup and PET scan.

View this post on Instagram

He spoke to PEOPLE about his health that month, explaining that he was "in shock" when he got the news. He assumed the tumor was related to his lymphoma at first, but was told the two cancers were unrelated.

"It turns out, if I hadn't had that PET scan, then they wouldn't have had this early of a detection and I'd have been in [...] a world of pain soon," he said of his second diagnosis. "So as weird as this sounds, I'm now actually thankful for the first cancer, because it helped me detect this second one."

The comedian went on to share that he would be undergoing 35 rounds of targeted radiation through Dec. 31 to treat the cancer. He had already undergone robotic surgery to biopsy part of his tongue, a painful operation in an of itself.

Going through the process took an emotional toll on Coulier, he admitted on Good Morning America Wednesday. But he told fellow cancer survivor Robin Roberts he adopted a positive mindset to get through it.

"[Radiation] has totally different side effects. It can steal parts of your life away from you, psychologically, emotionally and certainly physically," he said. "And I wasn't going to allow cancer to do that. I was going to laugh my way through it and keep the people that I love close to me. And that helps."

Those people include his wife Melissa Bring, who he said has been "amazing through all this," as well as his former Full House costar, John Stamos.

"John flew into Michigan, came and visited us, and made me laugh. He's my brother. He wore a bald cap and when he came around the corner dressed like that, I dropped to the floor laughing. He got COVID while he was staying with us, so we were like two fifth graders sitting in the hallway, talking to each other with walkie talkies. We're very mature!"

Now in remission, Coulier said he hopes sharing his experience will encourage others to prioritize early detection and regular checkups.

"I feel as though I can help people," he said. "I never wanted to be the poster boy for cancer, believe me. But now I feel like I can encourage people to get those prostate exams and mammograms. Talk to your doctors and get ahead of this."

He added, "Even though I'm in remission, I feel like cancer's always in the rear-view mirror behind me. 'Ehh, you trying to pass me here?' So early detection really means everything."

Peter Attia's forthcoming appearance on 60 Minutes has been pulled amid controversy over past emails he exchanged with Jeffrey Epstein

CBS News has pulled a rerun of a segment featuring the new contributor, which was set to air on Sunday

Attia issued an apology over his correspondence with Epstein on Feb. 2 while denying criminal wrongdoing

Dr. Peter Attia's next appearance on 60 Minutes has been pulled after his past correspondence with billionaire sex offender Jeffrey Epstein gained national attention this week.

Following Attia's name appearing in the final batch of Epstein-related documents released by the Department of Justice, PEOPLE can confirm that CBS News has pulled a 60 Minutes rerun from the air featuring the newly announced contributor. The segment first aired in October and featured Attia speaking with correspondent Norah O'Donnell, per multiple outlets including Deadline and Variety.

The development comes just days after Attia, a 52-year-old longevity influencer, was named one of CBS News' 19 new contributors on Jan. 27 by editor-in-chief Bari Weiss.

CBS News did not immediately respond when asked about Attia's status at the network.

Attia's name appears roughly 1,700 times in the DOJ's Epstein Library, including as part of an email in which he wrote to Epstein that the "biggest problem with becoming friends with you" is that the "life you lead is so outrageous, and yet I can't tell a soul." He also wrote that "p---y is, indeed, low carb," adding that he was "still awaiting results on gluten content, though."

Attia wrote in one email in January 2016, "I go into JE withdrawal when I don't see him."

On Monday, Feb. 2, Attia issued a lengthy apology to social media after sharing the same message with his team internally. At the time, he wrote on X that he did not participate in or witness criminal activity. His "interactions with Epstein had nothing to do with his sexual abuse or exploitation of anyone," Attia wrote.

"That said, I apologize and regret putting myself in a position where emails, some of them embarrassing, tasteless, and indefensible, are now public, and that is on me," Attia wrote. "I accept that reality and the humiliation that comes with it."

Jeffrey Epstein

Department of Justice

After Attia wrote that he met Epstein in 2014, he emphasized on X that he "asked him directly about his 2008 conviction" soon after. Epstein notably served over a year behind bars in Palm Beach County as a result of his 2008 guilty plea to soliciting a person under 18 for prostitution.

In the years since 2008, dozens of women have accused Epstein of sexual abuse. In July 2019, he was arrested and charged with one count of sex trafficking of minors and one count of conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking of minors. Epstein died by suicide one month later.

Attia also directly addressed one email to the sex offender, which featured the subject line "Got a fresh shipment." Per Attia, that email "contained a photograph of bottles of metformin, a medication I had just received from the pharmacy for my own use" and he was referring to the medication in the subject.

"In 2018, I came to learn this was grossly minimized (more on this below)," he wrote. "I was incredibly naïve to believe him. I mistook his social acceptance in the eyes of the credible people I saw him with for acceptability, and that was a serious error in my judgment."

"To be clear, I never witnessed illegal behavior and never saw anyone who appeared underage in his presence," Attia added.

CBS News previously pulled a 60 Minutes segment, titled "Inside CECOT," back in December. The segment focused on Venezuelan men who were deported by the Trump administration to a notorious El Salvador prison.

The veteran correspondent behind the piece said she learned the day before that Weiss had "spiked our story," calling the decision "not an editorial decision" but "a political one."

A CBS News spokesperson wrote in an release that the story needed additional reporting. It later aired on Jan. 18.

Weiss was appointed editor-in-chief of CBS News in October.

For *The Vampire Diaries* creatives, casting Enzo was a particularly difficult task. Because originally, the role was going to be very different.

"You were supposed to be the third Salvatore brother," executive producer Julie Plec tells star Michael Malarkey in episode 8 of *EW's Binge: The Vampire Diaries*. Writer Brett Matthews adds, "That was always the plan, and then it went a different direction, but that's why it was so hard to find the person. We thought it was going to be a Salvatore brother, so we cast a very wide net [and] looked very hard." Ultimately, they scrapped that plan and made it so Enzo didn't share Salvatore blood, but he was a brother figure for Damon (Ian Somerhalder) for many years (and he was sired by Lily Salvatore).

But that wasn't the only plan that changed in the writers' room over the years. In discussing the *Vampire Diaries*' final season, Plec and Matthews recall the final major debate: Which Salvatore were they going to kill in the series finale? "We went back and forth in the writers' room all season long," Plec says. "We finally landed on: We're killing Damon. That's the right thing to do. He is the one with the consequence to pay. Stefan was morally a bit stronger of a character."

The Vampire Diaries

Matthews adds, "Damon's a fairly obvious choice," noting that the writers really fell in love with the idea of Damon compelling Stefan (Paul Wesley) to let him die. But when executive producer Kevin Williamson proposed that it should be Stefan that dies, they started to rethink their plan. "It felt like dying for Stefan freed him from a lot of weight, whereas it felt like living for Damon freed him to go and be the man that he was always supposed to be," Plec says.

Of course, both Salvatores were meant to die in the original ending Plec and Williamson came up with during the show's second season. In that ending, "The boys would sacrifice themselves to save Elena so that Elena could go and have a life and be human and live," Plec recalls during the podcast. "To save her, they would die together, and that was always the pitch. And then when Nina [Dobrev] left, it felt like the show can't be as much about protecting Elena's happiness, although that's important to us, but we want to protect the bothers' happiness, we want them to get something out of this. Then it shifted to: We can't kill both of them for her because that feels somehow like nobody got what they wanted. Let's find a different way to give one of these brothers the happiness that they need and the other brother the closure that they need."

(One other way Dobrev leaving changed the plan? Plec says, "I thought that by the time we came back to the end of the series, whenever it was, that Elena would've found her way back to Stefan and Damon would've found a different path.")

Katherine Pierce was a staple of the *Vampire Diaries* universe. But at one point in the series, the writers had to fight to tell more of her story.

"We had to negotiate for the right to let Nina [Dobrev] play Katherine again because the season 2 Katherine [story] had really taken everything out of her and the network was being very protective," executive producer Julie Plec says about the show's fifth season during episode 5 of *EW's Binge: The Vampire Diaries*. "[The network] and studio were being very protective and they were like, 'You can't do that anymore, you can't have Katherine.'"

On an earlier episode of the podcast, Dobrev spoke about how exhausted she was at the end of season 2, the first season in which she played both Elena and Katherine in the present day. So when it came time to make Katherine human and even introduce a third Petrova doppelgänger, the writers had to get creative. "We had to basically beg the network to let us even write story for Katherine," Plec says, noting that "the triplegänger made the whole thing worth it."

Fans will remember that season 5 featured Katherine taking over Elena's body, which meant that for a good chunk of the season, Dobrev only had one character to play. And then, eventually, Katherine met her demise, a decision that also came about following those negotiations. "I literally think we had to say we'll kill her in order to get permission to use her," Plec recalls.

Additionally, during the podcast, Plec discusses the choice to have Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) be the two characters who "die" together at the end of season 5, which led to a discussion about Bamon, the popular ship. "Bonnie and Damon had a thing in the books we had sort of always said, 'We don't buy a romantic connection between Bonnie and Damon because Damon's just done too many terrible things and Bonnie just has more integrity than that,'" Plec says. "But we wanted to service that relationship in the canon a little bit."

The* Vampire Diaries* creators have talked a lot about the importance of a great villain for the series, and in its later seasons, there was one villain that stood out among the rest: Kai Parker (Chris Wood). Introduced in season 6, the sociopathic siphoner quickly became a favorite in the *TVD* fandom, and for Ian Somerhalder, whose Damon Salvatore was the series' first villain, Kai marked a significant shift for the show.

In episode 6 of *EW's Binge: The Vampire Diaries*, Somerhalder recalls his hesitation about Damon becoming a good — or at least better — guy in the show's third season. "I was so upset about the trajectory of Damon," Somerhalder says. "So much so that at one point I was sitting across from [executive producer] Julie [Plec] in her office in Atlanta almost in tears so angry about this."

The Vampire Diaries

Plec, along with her co-creator Kevin Williamson, explained that Damon couldn't be what they called a "one trick pony," that he was going to be the villain at times and the hero at others.
