Navy fires aircraft carrier captain who raised alarm about virus outbreak

Appearing Navy Secretary Thomas Modly has fired the captain who raised the alarm a few spike in coronavirus instances onboard his aircraft service, which was sidelined in Guam final week, the Navy introduced on Thursday.

Capt. Brett Crozier wrote a letter Navy leaders Monday pleading for extra help to combat the outbreak, which has sickened roughly 100 sailors on the aircraft service USS Theodore Roosevelt. The letter was leaked to the media.

In the letter, Crozier urged "decisive action" to take away the "majority of personnel" from the service.

“We aren't at warfare. Sailors do not have to die," Crozier wrote. "If we do not act now, we're failing to properly take care of our most trusted asset — our sailors.”

Modly faulted Crozier for "not working with the chain of command" when writing the letter and by not raising the difficulty with Modly instantly. He also stated the Navy was already addressing Crozier's considerations by the point the letter was written. "He sent it out pretty broadly," Modly stated, but stopped in need of accusing Crozier of leaking the letter.

“I might reach no other conclusion that Capt. Crozier had allowed the complexity of his problem with the Covid breakout on the ship to overwhelm his means to behave professionally when appearing professionally was what was wanted at the most at the time," Modly stated. "We do and we should always anticipate more from the commanding officers of our aircraft carriers”

Reuters first reported the news.
