The U.S. is conducting retaliatory airstrikes in Iraq after two U.S. and one British service member died in a rocket attack Wednesday, a U.S. official confirmed to POLITICO.
The strikes come simply hours after Pentagon leaders warned that the United States would respond to the deadly assault, which they stated was launched by Iranian-backed Shia militia groups in Iraq.
“Let me be clear: The U.S. won't tolerate attacks towards our individuals, our pursuits or our allies," Protection Secretary Mark Esper informed reporters on the Pentagon, including that he spoke to President Donald Trump after the attack and the president gave him "the authority to do what we have to do constant together with his steerage."
Officers didn't identify the group accountable however stated they have been "assured" they knew who was behind the assault after capturing the truck that fired off 30 Katyusha rockets, 18 of which landed on Camp Taji, Iraq.
Officers have stated that Iran-backed Kataib Hezbollah is the only Shia militia group recognized to have carried out an assault on this scale towards U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq. The group attacked a army base in Kirkuk, Iraq, in December that killed a U.S. contractor and set off a collection of responses that brought the U.S. and Iran to the brink of struggle.
