The activist and whistleblower Chelsea Manning tried suicide on Wednesday, her legal workforce stated in a news launch.
The statement came just a few days before Manning was scheduled to seem at a courtroom listening to on whether or not to proceed sanctions imposed on her after refusing to adjust to a grand jury investigation into Julian Assange, the founding father of WikiLeaks. Manning got here to national consideration after leaking categorized documents to WikiLeaks and being court-martialed for violating the Espionage Act.
Manning has claimed that the grand jury investigation was potential fodder for abuse, writing in 2019 that it was “an effort to frighten journalists and publishers, who serve an important public good.”
Manning has been jailed for contempt of the investigation for months. She had previously been held in a army prison from 2010 to 2017, till her sentence was commuted by President Barack Obama.
