Biden's closing Iowa message: Imagine a post-Trump world

Former Vice President Joe Biden is launching his last tv advert in Iowa ahead of the caucuses there, urging voters to think about what a Biden administration might accomplish after President Donald Trump is defeated.

The advert, shared first with POLITICO, will begin operating on television in Iowa markets on Tuesday and makes an implicit electability argument for Biden.

“Imagine all the progress we will make within the next four years,” Biden, who's narrating the ad, says before itemizing reasonably priced health care, preventing climate change and banning assault weapons. “What we imagine at this time, you can also make a reality. But first we need to beat Donald Trump.”

The campaign advised POLITICO that the ad would run in five Iowa tv markets and statewide on Hulu via the caucuses, which can happen next Monday.

The new television advert will run together with a spot released by the marketing campaign last week that makes a more specific electability argument. “Joe Biden is the strongest candidate” to face Trump, the narrator of that ad says, citing head-to-head polling numbers. “This is not any time to take a danger. We'd like our strongest candidate.”

Both advertisements come as Biden battles a surging Bernie Sanders for a lead in public polling within the state, with Pete Buttigieg and Elizabeth Warren each remaining inside hanging distance.

The advertisements lean into Biden’s perceived power in the election: that he's the candidate greatest suited to defeat Trump. In a New York Times/Siena College poll released in Iowa over the weekend — by which Sanders led the horse-race polling query — a plurality of voters stated Biden was the candidate who can be greatest for defeating Trump, at 32 %. Sanders was in second with that question, at 24 %.

The campaign can also be releasing a brand new digital ad that includes Biden’s spouse that strikes an identical tone. “Imagine waking up and the information isn’t a few late-night tweet storm, and once they present the president, you don’t flip the channel,” Jill Biden says in that ad. “As a result of it is someone who can convey this nation collectively. That’s my husband, Joe Biden.”

The advertisements come amid a last dash for Biden, who's spending the week within the Hawkeye State. Biden, who, in contrast to some of his prime rivals, is just not caught in Washington because of the Senate impeachment trial, is in the midst of a bus tour throughout the state.

But Biden continues to be middle stage through the Senate course of. Trump’s legal professionals tried to recast the trial into an alternate-reality hearing of former President Barack Obama and Biden’s administration, following a bombshell story by The New York Occasions that reported that Trump’s former national security adviser John Bolton instantly linked Trump’s withholding help to Ukraine to his wanting an investigation of Biden and different Democratic rivals.
