The mind is a terrible thing to waste, and in the horror sci-fi film *Black Box*, mind games run rampant. Struggling to remember how to perform basic tasks both at work and in his personal life, Nolan reaches out to a neurologist who deems him a perfect candidate for her experimental black box treatment. Repeated journeys into his mind force Nolan to battle the monsters in his memories, but the deeper he delves, the more he suspects that his past is not what it seems.

Chucky (voice: Brad Dourif) in 'Child's Play'. United Artists/Everett

Ever seen a highbrow horror concept turn lowbrow in the best possible way? *Child's Play* begins with a mother innocently buying her son a redheaded doll. There's just one problem: The toy, Chucky (voiced perfectly by Brad Dourif), has the soul of a serial killer and is all about committing murder and mayhem when nobody is watching.

In our ranking of the franchise's films, EW's writer said this first entry "feels pointed and a bit angry about the feverish state of consumerism then and now, but thankfully it never becomes pious in its messaging…it's a movie that just wants to have a good time." *—Chris Snellgrove*

An English-language horror movie set in France, *The Deep House* follows two American YouTubers (James Jagger and Camille Rowe) as they travel the country, searching for haunted houses. But after discovering a mansion submerged in a lake, the couple finds themselves launched into the deep end of some nasty supernatural business.

Haters of deep water, Satanic imagery, and sustained suspense need not apply: *The Deep House *runneth over with all three. But lovers of slow-moving, found footage films with unique settings (a significant portion of the action takes place underwater) will find much to love about this ambitious horror movie. *—I.G.*

Evil Eye (2020)

Sunita Mani as Pallavi and Sarita Choudhury as Usha in 'Evil Eye'

Soulmates and reincarnation figure heavily into the supernatural vibes of *Evil Eye*, the third installment of the *Welcome to the Blumhouse* anthology of horror films on Amazon Prime Video. Sarita Choudhury stars as Usha, a woman who only wants the best for her daughter — a wealthy, handsome Indian suitor — but when Pallavi (Sunita Mani) begins dating Sandeep (Omar Maskati), attraction soon reveals itself to be an other-worldly obsession. What if someone's stalker was powered by the supernatural?

That's the terrifying conceit at the core of *Evil Eye*, and worse, Usha sees Sandeep's true intentions, but no one, including her daughter, will believe her. Rule of thumb: If a guy like Sandeep seems too good to be true, he probably is. *—Johnny Loftus*

Hani Furstenberg as Hanna in 'The Golem'

Hani Furstenberg as Hanna in 'The Golem'.

Dread Central/Epic Pictures

Set in 17th century Lithuania, *The Golem *is an Israeli supernatural horror film based on a monster from Jewish folklore. Benjamin (Ishai Golan) and Hanna (Hani Furstenberg) are a young couple living in a small Jewish village, struggling to conceive seven years after the death of their son. When people in their area are accused of cursing their fellow peasants with the Black Death, Hanna summons a Golem to protect the village from its enemies.

But even though the Golem Hanna creates looks strangely like her dead son, she soon learns the creature has no allegiance to her — or the people she intends for it to protect. Directed by the Paz brothers (*JeruZalem*) and filmed outside of Kyiv, Ukraine, *The Golem *is the rare horror project that feels both historical and modern. *—I.G.*

Well Go USA/Courtesy Everett Collection

YouTubers will do a lot of questionable things for views, but in *Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum*, one channel's livestream ends with more of its participants dead than alive. A South Korean found footage horror film set in the Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital, the movie follows a web series creator and the six people he recruits to explore the abandoned building. Drawn to room 402, the former intensive care unit, the group encounters supernatural entities they can't explain and danger they can't escape.

Based on the real-life Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital — a South Korean asylum that was considered one of the country's most haunted buildings before it was demolished in 2018 — the film starts off slow, but will have you lunging for the lights by the time the ending arrives. *—I.G.*****Where to watch *Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum*: Amazon Prime Video******Director:** Jung Bum-shik******Cast: **Wi Ha-joon, Park Ji-hyun, Oh Ah-yeon, Moon Ye-won, Park Sung-hoon

What if you combined the verité grooves of documentary-style found footage, the inherent creepiness of a haunted house attraction, and the sense of uncertainty around a horrifying and mysterious incident of violence? Well, you'd have something like *Hell House LLC. *Amidst frantic local media coverage, interviews with inquisitive journalists, and even a cryptic YouTube video from a spectator, the death of 15 people in the basement of Hell House remains a mystery… that is until the lone survivor of the team behind the attraction comes forward with tapes documenting the terrors leading up to that fateful night.

This 2015 indie horror hit has capitalized on its cult following with two ensuing sequels, but don't get ahead of yourself. There's enough going on in the first *Hell House* to occupy your supernatural curiosity. *—J.L.*

House (1985)

William Katt as Roger Cobb (right) in 'House'

William Katt as Roger Cobb (right) in 'House'.

New World Releasing/Everett

Nobody expected that a small, comedic horror movie about a writer working on his novel in a haunted house would go on to rival *Pretty in Pink* at the box office, but that is the story of *House*, the film that launched a franchise. Starring William Katt, George Wendt, Richard Moll, and Kay Lenz, the movie follows a writer (Katt) who moves into his aunt’s old Victorian home after her death, only to find himself hounded by flashbacks of his fallen Vietnam War buddy, his missing son, and other assorted monsters.

A family-friendly horror movie that is light on scares and heavy on laughs, *House* is the kind of ‘80s film capable of entertaining and evoking nostalgia for simpler times when ghosting only happened in real life, instead of via text. *—I.G.*

During the tail-end of World War II — as Japanese soldiers continued to sow terror across the Philippines — a well-heeled family remains confined in their fortress-like mansion. When her father (Arnold Reyes) leaves in pursuit of aid from Americans, a young girl named Tala (Felicity Kyle Napuli) is left to deal with her dying mother, whose waning health drives her daughter to seek refuge from an *Engkanto* (Jasmine Curtis-Smith): a disconcerting, ever-smiling fairy who carries insidious plans to consume them from within.

Premiering at Sundance as part of the festival's "Midnight" section, this Filipino folk horror is an effective slow-burn enriched with provocative imagery and absorbing costume and sound design. But beyond its artsy veneer, *In My Mother's Skin* operates as a parable for the agonies endured by a nation ravaged by colonial exploitation. *—James Mercadante*

Given that everything natural on the continent is designed to kill you, Australia seems an ideal setting for a horror movie. But in the psychological horror film *Lake Mungo* — set in Ararat, Australia — the fear isn’t born from external foes, but rather from the terror required to succumb to the depths of human feeling. *Lake Mungo* begins with the accidental drowning of 16-year-old Alice Palmer.

Upon returning home, her brother Matthew believes he sees Alice’s ghost, but further investigation from the Palmer family reveals that Alice was seeing premonitions of her death. Far from providing closure, the family begins to realize that the more they learn about Alice’s personal life, the less they understand about what happened to her. *—I.G.*

The film follows Adam (Josh Stewart) and Lisa (Bojana Novakovic) as they move into a new home provided by the university where Adam has accepted a job as a professor. But after Lisa opens a mysterious gift from her sister, her pregnancy takes a turn for the sinister, and she becomes convinced her unborn child has been transmuted into something evil. *Malicious* delivers a terrifying cinematic interpretation of its tagline, "Children are a gift from hell." *—I.G.*****Where to watch *Malicious*: Amazon Prime Video******Director: **Michael Winnick******Cast:** Bojana Novakovic, Josh Stewart, Melissa Bolona, Delroy Lindo

The other residents of Golden Sun Manor seem to be dying at an alarming rate, and Judith soon discovers how supernatural forces keep other people alive even longer. *The Manor* is another addition to the *Welcome to the Blumhouse* series, and returns Hershey to horror after her terrific turn in the *Insidious* franchise. *—J.L.*

Regina Hall as Gail Bishop in 'Master'.

Amazon Studios/Everett Collection

The rumor going around the halls of the fictional East Coast college, Ancaster, is that the elite, Ivy League institution has long been haunted by the ghost of a convicted witch. A supernatural, psychological thriller, *Master *stars Regina Hall as Gail, the first Black master — or head of the college. Gail's tenure at the school coincides with the arrival of freshman student named Jasmine (Zoe Renee), whose assigned room has its own beyond-the-grave history, and whose roommate is a separate horror story altogether.

Representing writer-director Mariama Diallo's debut feature, *Master *is a smart, specific film set in a toxic environment that is poised to combust. EW's critic writes that the movie is a "never-less-than-memorable feature debut, both an indictment of racist institutions and a horror movie in the vein of *Get Out* and *Candyman*." *—I.G.*

Saint Maud (2021)

Morfydd Clark as Maud in 'Saint Maud'

Religious conversion often comes following a religious experience. A moment of ecstasy and understanding gives way to commitment which gives way to…what? The stark divide between before Christ and after is a source of terror for many a saint and writer-director Rose Glass' debut feature is one of the most effective genre pieces about the complexities of conversion.

Morfydd Clark stars as the titular Maud, a shy nurse with a murky past who can't help but worm her newfound faith into her work with hospice patients. EW lauds *Saint Maud* as a "remarkable feature debut for Glass, who conjures an intimate mood of psychological horror before veering assuredly into a more extreme freakout." *—Randall Colburn*

Suspiria (2018)

Dakota Johnson as Susanna (center) in 'Suspiria'

Dakota Johnson as Susanna (center) in 'Suspiria'. Alessio Bolzoni/Amazon Studios

In a creative pivot, director Luca Guadagnino followed up his hit *Call Me by Your Name* (2017) with *Suspiria*, a period retelling of Dario Argento's 1977 horror classic that features the incomparable Tilda Swinton playing three different characters (one of whom is male), Dakota Johnson, and new-era scream queen Mia Goth. When a sheltered young woman named Susie (Johnson) travels to Germany and joins an exclusive dance company, she encounters a whole different kind of company in the coven of witches who run the place.

EW's critic highlights some of "the incredibly effective sequences in the film, including one showstopper in which Susie auditions for the lead part in a piece while, in a nearby studio, one of her fellow dancers is violently whipped around like a rag doll." *—I.G.*

The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)

Jill Larson as Deborah Logan in 'The Taking of Deborah Logan'

Jill Larson as Deborah Logan in 'The Taking of Deborah Logan'. Millennium Entertainment

Speaking of found footage, the technique still had legs in 2014 when filmmaker Adam Robitel utilized it to a terrifically unsettling effect in his directorial debut, *The Taking of Deborah Logan*. This time, film students set out to document one aging woman's bout with Alzheimer's, but instead discover something much more sinister lurking in her mental cavities. The fear and mystery of a chronically debilitating disease, the brutal legacy of infamous past slayings, and talk of rituals and reincarnation are all at work in this oft-overlooked gem of 2010s supernatural horror.

While the film eventually established a steady following, that wasn't clear at first. "It was devastating," Robitel tells EW about its underwhelming release. "But, that weekend, on Netflix, a million people saw and shared it." *—J.L.*

Don’t be scared by *The Wailing*’s runtime: At two hours and 36 minutes, this prestige horror film is epically long, but each of those minutes is well-earned. A supernatural whodunnit out of South Korea, *The Wailing *follows a cop (Kwak Do-won) as he investigates the source of a mysterious illness affecting rural villagers and turning them violent — including his own daughter.

From writer-director Na Hong-jin, this exorcism movie mixes familiar Eastern and Western ideas and imagery around possessions, exorcisms, and demons, and manages to emerge with a story that looks and feels completely new. *—I.G.*

*We Are Still Here* is a 2015 period indie horror from writer-director Ted Geoghegan, and a film that proves that when it comes to the supernatural, the horrific, and things proverbially going bump in the night, there's no better setting than a proper haunted house. Here, genre legend Barbara Crampton and Andrew Sensenig star as a couple inspired to move into a mysterious new home after the traumatic loss of their young son. But despite seeking a fresh start, all they get is meddling townspeople, longstanding secrets, and a home with its own blood to spill. *—J.L.*

Patrick Muldoon's sister, Shana Muldoon Zappa, shared a sweet video the late Starship Troopers actor sent his family just before his death.

"I know he loves this earthly realm and all he created within it," she wrote in a tribute to him.

Muldoon died at 57 on Sunday after he was found unconscious inside his home.

Patrick Muldoon's sister, Shana Muldoon Zappa, has paid tribute to her brother days after his sudden death, sharing a video from the actor with his fans.

Zappa took to social media on Wednesday to post a clip Muldoon shared with their family just before he died.

"This was the last video my brother sent to our constant family group chat — from [Saturday] night at [the] LACMA opening," she wrote alongside the clip.

In the video, Muldoon shows Domenico Zampieri's 1622 work Saint Ignatius of Loyola's Vision of Christ and God the Father at La Storta on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. "It's a beautiful painting," Muldoon says in the clip, before doing his Loyola High School football chant. "I think that's what he was thinking in the picture, actually."

In the post's caption, Zappa revealed that Muldoon "loved" Saint Ignatius because "he was kind of the cool guy, good time guy who was still able to become a saint."

"As always, he jokes... and yet profoundly brings all things into one moment — the jokester, the artist, the football player, and the intensely spiritually connected, Jesuit-educated, incredible being that is Patrick Muldoon," Zappa wrote. "My best friend. The best brother/son/uncle anyone could ever possibly ask for."

Zappa wrote that she would have "so much more to share" with her followers. "I know he loves this earthly realm and all he created within it," she wrote, "including all of the love and light his spirit is now receiving through all of you."

"We will eventually have details on when and where we will celebrate him. But now we are still processing," she added. "I continue to speak of him in present tense. Because his spirit is all around me. He just changed forms💫🙏🏼💚."

Muldoon died at age 57 on Sunday, and while details surrounding his death were not immediately available, his manager provided the date of his death to Variety, and Zappa told TMZ that the star was found unconscious in a bathroom where he was showering inside his Beverly Hills home.

Zappa said her sibling went to shower shortly after having coffee with his girlfriend, who later found him on the floor of the bathroom when she went to check on him.

As news of Muldoon's death broke, his peers and friends shared their memories of the actor and celebrated his life on social media.

Days of Our Lives and General Hospital star Kate Mansi, who was close friends with Muldoon, posted an emotional tribute to the late star in an Instagram Story. "My husband woke me up from London very early this morning when he saw the news, so I didn't wake up to it while scrolling. I'm so stuck," Mansi wrote. "As evidenced by how many people feel this way, Muldoon left an impact on everyone he knew."

She added, "@Thepatrickmuldoon had a phrase he'd say when you reached a new portal in your life. He'd say: 'You popped your consciousness!' To the original Cali boy rocker, love you forever. No one LIVED and LOVED like you."

Actress and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum Denise Richards — who starred with the actor in the 1997 sci-fi cult favorite Starship Troopers before they dated — remembered him in a heartfelt statement posted to Instagram on Tuesday.

"This is so hard for me to put into words. I am deeply heartbroken & devastated losing you. You were my best friend & my family," Richards wrote in the post in part, which also contained various images of the former couple. "We met in our first acting class. I was 19. Never had an acting job. And you were 21, a student at USC doing a recurring role on Who's the Boss. And here we are. 36 years later. My whole adult life & I don't know it without you."

She continued, "We thought we'd live forever, or at least into our 90s. Schweetbabe, I will be looking for those signs. I you're still here with me. I love you so much & miss you dearly, Schweetbabe."

Get your daily dose of entertainment news, celebrity updates, and what to watch with our EW Dispatch newsletter.

Two days before his death, Muldoon announced on Instagram that he was an executive producer on the upcoming thriller Kockroach, starring Chris Hemsworth, Taron Egerton, Zazie Beetz, and Alec Baldwin.

“Today celebrates the 25th Anniversary of Destiny’s Child‘s third album, Survivor ❤️🙏🏽,” Beyoncé, 44, wrote via Instagram on Saturday, April 25. “To my soul sisters, I thank God for you both. It’s an honor to sing through life with you ladies by my side.”

She continued, “Behind the curtains, beyond the lights, forever my Angels. Ma kee ta ta 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾.”

Destiny’s Child released their third album, Survivor, in April 2001, featuring hit tracks including “Survivor,” "Independent Woman Part I,” “Bootylicious” and “Nasty Girl.”

Beyonce, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams Have Destiny’s Child Reunion at ‘Cowboy Carter’ Concert

Beyoncé was a founding member of Destiny’s Child alongside Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett. Roberson, 44, and Luckett, 45, left the girl group in 2000 before Michelle Williams came aboard. The group disbanded six years later when Beyoncé, Rowland, 45, and Williams, 46, all pursued solo careers.

While Beyoncé, Rowland and Williams have each found enormous success on their own, they have remained close. Beyoncé invited her former bandmates to perform at several of her concerts, including the 2018 Super Bowl halftime show, a headlining set at Coachella in 2018 and a 2025 Cowboy Carter Tour show.

Beyoncé’s dad, Mathew Knowles, has even been vocal about the girls’ decision to continue performing together while simultaneously supporting each other’s solo endeavors.

“I certainly hope so. I also understand that Kelly and Beyoncé are mothers and they have a family and that changes the dynamics,” Knowles, 74, exclusively told Us Weekly in May 2020. “Each one of the ladies are successful in their own right. They all have their individual solo careers. So coordinating family, careers, that’s a lot of juggling. I’m sure in due time the ladies will decide if that’s what they want to do and if they do or do not as supportive as I could be as their manager.”

He continued at the time, “[Their Coachella performance] shows how much they practiced, that 10 years later they cannot miss a beat. It’s just remarkable. It shows that their dedication was really there. I know these ladies, they have strong work ethics. I’m extremely proud of all three of them.”

Rowland shares two sons with her husband, Tim Weatherspoon, while Beyoncé and Jay-Z are parents of three.

Beyoncé and Rowland even recently cheered on Williams during a 2024 performance of Death Becomes Her on Broadway.

“I would actually love for them to [perform on Broadway],” Williams exclusively told Us in November 2024. “I think they’re very capable of starring in a Broadway show — absolutely!”

Drag is magic. But it's also tragic if you're Ariel Versace on the receiving end of a hilarious pop off in the midst of Wig Gate.

*RuPaul's Drag Race* season 11 winner Yvie Oddly and Miss Congeniality Nina West stopped by the most recent episode of *EW's BINGE* podcast to tell hosts Joey Nolfi and Jillian Sederholm about a particularly testy, unaired moment that saw the latter queen — regarded as one of the kindest, gentlest souls in the RuGirl family — losing it in the middle of the season's most peculiar controversies.

"Wig Gate was such a big thing for our season," West said, as Oddly chimed in about the "so stupid" moment that, in the simplest of terms, sort of (but then later sort of didn't) involve various queens being accused of stealing Versace's wigs after her elimination. Tensions flared up over the confusion when the previously eliminated queens returned to the Werk Room for the perennial makeover challenge. "I completely lost my cool. All of those girls came back on my elimination episode," West recalls. "At this point, I was really raw. I had a feeling that this just might be my time, I was like, I think I'm going home. It was right when those girls walked in, and Ariel looked over at my station and she goes, 'That's my wig!' and I completely lost my s---. I don't think there were any cameras on me. I was like, I don't know why she would accuse me of stealing, I don't need to steal! Ariel and I have obviously talked about it since, because I popped off as the most Nina West pop off I've ever done."

Oddly also remembers the moment with a laugh, mimicking West's tone as she delivered a fatal, verbal blow to Versace after the accusation: "You cut her off immediately like, 'No, no, no, no, sweetie! That's *my* wig. It, unfortunately, *looks* like it's styled like one of your wigs!'"

Elsewhere on the episode, Oddly discusses an update on her overall health and the status of her Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, what her hot dad has been up to in quarantine, the difficulties queens of color face after graduating from the show, and another tense moment with that dreaded magician who guest-starred on the magic show challenge episode.

Listen to the full episode above.

The world is full of mundane mysteries—all you need to do is slow down to see them. Some weird things you’ll be able to figure out yourself. Others, well, they’re so confusing and chaotic that you might need to reach out to others to make sense of them.

That’s where ‘Things That Make You Go Hmmm’ truly shines. It’s a popular Facebook page that posts people’s photos of the bizarre and funniest things they’ve witnessed. In other words, all the things that make you go “hmmm.” In the mood for something really unusual? Try not to lose sight of what’s real.

Whether or not a meme is close to the objective truth doesn’t have much of an impact on its popularity, Psychology Today stresses. What matters the most, instead, are the emotions that you feel upon seeing an image or video.

Internet content that forces you to feel stronger emotions, whether positive or negative, tends to be shared and reshared more frequently than memes that cause weaker emotions.

So, content that is extremely funny, makes you angry, or disgusts you tends to be the most viral.

In the meantime, the BBC explains that the most viral and beloved memes tend to focus on the things that are very recent in public memory and important to many people.

“Viral memes usually appeal to the most common denominator. So you don't have to necessarily be embedded in internet subculture to understand what it's saying. And the final thing I think is, it's the most basic thing but it's very hard to replicate, is that it should be fun to look at, and fun to share,” says Idil Galip, a doctoral researcher at the University of Edinburgh, and founder of the Meme Studies Research Network.

Memes are meant to be shared, reshared, and iterated upon, over and over again. Ideas only ever become memes when they are shared and replicated. And it is unavoidable that meme-focused communities look to each other for inspiration.

“Memes are the largest art movement in human history and they're here to stay. The sheer volume of artists and total works of art outranks graffiti and the Renaissance by an absurdly large margin. Memes are easy to make, but have become a new medium of communication that's capable of displaying emotion in completely new ways,” Chris Tweten, the founder of ‘Things That Make You Go Hmmm,’ told Bored Panda during an earlier interview.

The ‘Things That Make You Go Hmmm’ page has been around on Facebook since early 2018. Over the past 8+ years, the founder and curator of the project, Tweten, has grown a following of 337k followers and counting.

During a previous interview with us, he opened up about the story behind the page, as well as his own relationship with memes and social media.

“The story behind that page is actually quite interesting: I used to scale meme pages on FB and sell them. There was a time when I lived solely off of meme revenue!" Tweten, the founder, opened up to us.

"I ran that page solo, sourcing content from Reddit and Facebook groups. I'm a Canadian growth marketer who owns an agency called ‘SpacebarCollective’ that also specialized in growth hacking from 2014 to 2018,” he shared with us earlier.

“Facebook was a channel that was largely written off as a pay-to-win platform, but I found massive algorithmic exploits that allowed me to grow pages by 10k to 50k likes per month,” he said.

“The strategy hinged on using predictive analytics to determine which posts would get 100k+ impressions based on their first 10 minutes of engagement,” Tweten said, sharing with us that he had found an in-depth way to understand how the social network worked back then.

“Knowing exploits like this have a limited window of time when they actually work (before Facebook notices), I looked to Reddit to find communities with content that was available in high volume and where they were underserved on Facebook.”

“r/hmmm was a great source of content and the largest pages of similar names on Facebook at the time only had 10k page likes,” Tweten opened up.

“I knew I could outperform them within a week or two, so I started the page and started to scale it up. I repeated this same strategy for a few different niches, including a page for things that are funny and sad, Please Press F,” the founder said.

Meanwhile, we have actually covered the r/hmmm subreddit, the online community that inspired ‘Things That Make You Go Hmmm’ in the first place, before.

During Bored Panda’s earlier interview with CosmicKeys, the head moderator at r/hmmm, we found out that the sub was initially created in 2008, but its real founding date was 2016, when it began to see real activity online.

“I would post daily pictures while chat was going for people to laugh at oddities from different corners of the internet.”

“That grew into a large collection, so /r/hmmm was born. The name comes from a thread that would appear occasionally on 4chan, and the content was inspired by a website called spaceghetto," CosmicKeys said.

“The subreddit is about obscure and strange images, so over time, as certain types of images have gone from obscure to popular, we've made rules to exclude them.”

Which of these images confused and amused you the most, dear Pandas? Which ones made you go “hmmm” (or even “hmmmmm”) the most?

What’s something so bizarre that you’ve spotted in real life recently that you just had to take out your phone, snap a photo, and send it to your friends?
