Whether it's drama, comedy or something in between, TV show writers have never been afraid to surprise audiences with a memorable character death.

Back in March 1975, M*A*S*H became a TV death pioneer when Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) died in the season 3 finale. The character was headed home after being honorably discharged from the army, but before he could make it, he was killed by enemy fire.

Some 21st-century shows, however, make M*A*S*H's surprise death look tame.

Lost, which ran from 2004 to 2010, became known for its shocking twists before the first season was even finished. In the April 2005 episode "Do No Harm," viewers were devastated when Boone (Ian Somerhalder) died after a plane fell on him in the jungle, and his passing was just the beginning.

Manifest, You, Game of Thrones and more hit series have also thrown fans for a loop by killing off fan favorites.

Scroll down for a look back at some of the most shocking deaths in TV history — and remember, spoilers ahead!

George Cooper Sr. (Lance Barber) on 'Young Sheldon'
Sheldon Cooper's beloved father, George Cooper Sr., died of an offscreen heart attack during the final season of Young Sheldon. His sudden death was revealed in the final moments of May 9's episode, which premiered one week before the two-part finale is set to air on May 16.   Fans of The Big Bang Theory, which Young Sheldon serves as a prequel, will remember adult Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) referencing his father dying from a heart attack when he was 14 and growing up in East Texas. Without access to the hospital, she dies but not before Bode (Max Thieriot) agrees to stay on the straight and narrow for her daughter, Genevieve. (Bode could be Gen's biological father.) Jake (Jordan Calloway), meanwhile, can't get to Cara in time to propose to her as planned, leaving another character heartbroken. Sergei Bachlakov/CBS

During season 4, viewers met Eddie when he found himself at the center of a murder investigation. The leader of the Hellfire Club teamed up with Dustin and his friends to help them defeat Vecna — and clear his name. In Volume 2, however, Eddie comes full circle when he decides to stay behind in the Upside Down as a distraction instead of running away from danger. Eddie gets Dustin to safety but ends up losing too much blood himself. When Dustin returns for Eddie, he dies in his arms as a hero. Courtesy of Netflix © 2022

Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) on 'The Flash'
Saving the world sometimes means losing a hero. In order to save Caitlin (Panabaker) from the villainous Deathstorm (Robbie Amell) in the middle of season 8, Team Flash asked Frost (also Panabaker) to level up her powers. The process resulted in Frost's death, leaving a devastated Caitlin without her sister figure. "I loved getting to play her and all the different variations of her, the evil version, and then particularly these last couple of seasons, getting to see her really come into her own and have experiences and grow up and mature and take responsibility for her actions, I've enjoyed that immensely," Panabaker told EW about the shocking death. "So obviously it's a loss, but it did make for some great storytelling." Shane Harvey/The CW

There were many deaths throughout Ozark's four seasons, but the one that shocked fans the most was when Ruth was killed in an act of retaliation. During the second half of the final season, which aired in April 2022, Ruth murdered Javi (Alfonso Herrera) after she learned he was responsible for the death of her cousin Wyatt (Charlie Tahan). Her revenge plan led to a startling twist when Javi's mom followed her home in the series finale and shot her. STEVE DIETL/NETFLIX

Villanelle (Jodie Comer) on 'Killing Eve'
Fans were shocked when Eve and Villanelle finally gave into their feelings during the series finale — only to have the assassin killed at the very last moment. Executive producer Sally Woodward revealed that Villanelle's death was planned "quite early on" in the writing process. "We were open to something else sort of declaring itself, but it never really changed," she told Deadline in April 2022, shortly after the season 4 finale premiered. "We also didn't want to do anything horrible to her. I mean, pretty horrible. We didn't want to do anything gruesome to her. We didn't want to sort of go, here, 'See how you like it.' And we wanted it to be epic as well. She was surrounded by a sort of celestial light because she's a special being." Anika Molnar/BBCA

Mr. Big (Chris Noth) on 'And Just Like That'
Sex and the City fans were devastated in December 2021 when Carrie's husband, John James Preston (a.k.a. Mr. Big), died in the first episode of revival series, And Just Like That. The financier, who experienced heart problems during season 6 of SATC's original run, had a heart attack after a particularly invigorating session on his Peloton bike. After the episode debuted, Peloton issued a statement noting that Mr. Big's death couldn't only be attributed to his exercise. "Mr. Big lived what many would call an extravagant lifestyle — including cocktails, cigars, and big steaks — and was at serious risk as he had a previous cardiac event in season 6," the company told Us Weekly in a statement at the time. "These lifestyle choices and perhaps even his family history, which often is a significant factor, were the likely cause of his death. Riding his Peloton bike may have even helped delay his cardiac event." New Line Cinema/Hbo/Village Roadshow/Kobal/Shutterstock

Following Roseanne Barr's racist tweet in May 2018, the revival Roseanne was canceled by ABC. In June, the network announced they'd be bringing back The Conners, a sitcom that would follow the family without its lead character. On the series premiere of The Conners, the family found out Roseanne had died due to an overdose on opioids, which made sense since the character had struggled with a pill addiction in the past. Though the Song of Ice and Fire books remained vague about Snow's fate, episode director David Nutter confirmed, "Jon Snow is dead." Showtime shocked audiences by killing off one if its lead characters during season 4 of The Affair. Not only was Alison's death – first ruled a suicide but cause is still up in the air – surprising, the timing was also strange, as it happened during episode eight of the penultimate season. "Ruth wanted to leave the show. That was a request, so that was decided basically before we started writing. It wasn't a discovery of any kind. That was very deliberate," cocreator and showrunner Sarah Treem told The Hollywood Reporter. "And actually, we shot all of her work first. Her whole story line was shot before we shot anything else." As one of the first intimacy professionals to be recognized by SAG-AFTRA, Brooke M. Haney has become the go-to when it comes to choreographing sexually charged scenes.

In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Haney — who's served as an intimacy coordinator for Mayor of Kingstown, Elsbeth, The Best Man: The Final Chapters, Harlem and East New York — dished on what goes into overseeing sensitive sequences that translate into moments of passion onscreen and, most importantly, creating a safe space for the cast and crew.

"We joke that we're the only person production hires and pays to tell them no," Haney told Us while promoting their new book, The Intimacy Coordinator's Guidebook: Specialties for Stage and Screen. (Haney goes by they/she pronouns.)

Following the #MeToo movement, liaisons for actors and producers on projects where nudity may be involved became more prevalent. "Actors often say that they feel a lot safer with an intimacy coordinator," Haney, who has acted in the past, shared. "I don't think of my job as making actors feel safe — I think of it as making actors feel prepared because I can't define safety for someone else."

Michael Douglas Feels Like Intimacy Coordinators Take 'Control Away'

Haney's job starts with a meeting to understand the "vision" of the scene followed by discovering the "boundaries" of the actors involved.

"[I] meet with the director and producer in advance of shooting, and ask, 'What's the vision for this scene?' because ultimately, they're the storyteller," Haney said. "Then I meet with the actor and say, 'Here's the vision. What are your thoughts on the scene and what are your boundaries? Do your boundaries align with the way the director wants to tell this story?'"

"If they say, 'yes', great, we're good to go," Haney continued. However, often, "Actors will have a boundary [so] I'll go to the director and [say], 'We have a boundary, here are three other ways I think we can get your idea across in an equally or more compelling way. What do you think?'"

Two crucial elements in helping actors feel comfortable is letting them know what to expect ahead of time and considering the "different kinds of ways people have power," Haney shared, noting it's not rare for a rising actor working alongside an A-list star to be eager to impress the people they're working with.

"There's times when I work with an actor who [says], 'I don't need an intimacy coordinator, I feel totally fine articulating my boundaries,' and I'm like, 'Great, my job is not to be your voice,'" Haney continued. "If you feel confident, that's fantastic, [but] you're not the only one in the scene."

Steamiest TV Sex Scenes: From 'Bridgerton' to 'The Artful Dodger'

Filming threesomes or sex scenes with multiple participants can be more time-consuming and complex. "People's boundaries can be different with different people or around different actions," Haney explained, "so it's important I meet with each person individually and check in with them about everyone they're working with, and bring us together so we have a group understanding of what's going to happen."

Of course, there are certain things that are off-limits when it comes to filming sex scenes ("It's always fake, so any real sexual act is a no-no," Haney explained) but showmances can and do happen "quite frequently, honestly," which makes sense to Haney.

"One of the things we talk about in the book is about, in scenes of trauma and non-consent, asking actors to put their bodies into positions of fear or terror or rage, [that] our bodies don't know it's fake physiologically and still feel like they've gone through that — it's similar with intimacy," Haney explained. "If the screenwriter is giving you all the right words to say, and the choreography is giving you all the best choreography, it can feel really good."

Breaking Down Us' Most Anticipated Romantic Comedies of 2024

Still, an intimacy coordinator's job is to make sure that everything unfolding in production pertains to work. "I'm not going to be in charge of controlling what actors do on their own time. That's their business," Haney — who created The Actor's Warm Down, a 20-minute closure practice for actors who have worked on challenging projects — said. "But when we're at work, it should never be about their personal relationship, it should be about the characters."

There is only one goal when it comes to filming sex scenes, says Haney: "The audience should think it's real and the actors should feel like it's fake — sort of."

The Intimacy Coordinator's Guidebook: Specialties for Stage and Screen is available now.

Jinkx Monsoon is already a two-time RuPaul's Drag Race champion and a Broadway star, but now she can add "terrifying sci-fi villain" to her résumé.

Monsoon, 36, stars as Maestro on the Friday, May 10, episode of Doctor Who, and she had an absolute blast diving into the role.

"As a character actor who likes to work in the absurd and the over-the-top, to get to play a godlike demonic embodiment of music — I mean, roles like this do not come along often," Monsoon exclusively told Us Weekly ahead of her Doctor Who debut. "I've gotten to play some really cool roles, but this has everything all in one character. So it was just a dream job. I still can't believe I got asked to do this job. It was incredible."

The character of Maestro wasn't written expressly for Monsoon, but the part has all the campy charm that made her a fan favorite and two-time winner on Drag Race. She landed the gig after showrunner Russell T Davies attended one of her stage shows.

'RuPaul's Drag Race' Stars: Where Are They Now?

"He saw my show Together Again, Again! … I played myself in my 80s in this show that I wrote, and I play a bit of a monstrous version of myself," Monsoon told Us. "I think he saw something in [there] that he wanted for this villain. Some of the character existed before me and some of it was added to incorporate my strengths."

Monsoon is a longtime Doctor Who fan, but she was particularly thrilled to appear on the show this season as Ncuti Gatwa takes the helm as the first openly LGBTQIA+ actor to play the Doctor. Monsoon's character, Maestro, is also nonbinary — and pointedly corrects another character on their pronouns during their first scene.

"Doctor Who has always had a big queer fan base, and the fact that this season is really leaning into the inherent queerness that has always existed in Doctor Who, it feels like it's very much a new iteration of Doctor Who that is very much for the fan base," Monsoon told Us. "I feel so lucky that this is the season I get to join because I've been a fan of Russell's writing for so long, and I find his work so prolific and impactful."

She continued, "Now that it's giving the fresh perspective of Ncuti as the Doctor and inviting people like me to play guest stars — that's how we keep these things alive. We have to embrace fresh perspectives, because that's what audiences want. We want truth. We want authenticity. We want the stories to have meaning because the performers telling the stories care, and the representation matters. It improves everything for everyone really — everyone gets to bring their best self."

Maestro being nonbinary was written into the script, and Monsoon thinks that gender identity makes perfect sense for the character.

From Ashlee to Erika, These Celebs Have Starred in 'Chicago' on Broadway

"Why would a god care about gender? Why would a god adhere to gender rules that we created?" Monsoon asks. "They don't care. And getting asked to play a character that gets to be a rebel in that way? Like, 'I don't care about human standards and societal norms. Why? Because I'm so much more powerful than all of that.' That's a strong message. Even though I was playing a villain, that's a very strong message to send to your audience."

In addition to making a splash on Doctor Who, Monsoon is currently starring as Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors at New York City's Westside Theatre through May 26. She'll also return to Chicago next month as Matron "Mama" Morton after making her Broadway debut in the role last year. Asked which role she identifies with more, Monsoon chose Mama — but she still loves Audrey.

"I guess I don't actually identify with Audrey. I've always loved the character, but I've always seen other women I know in Audrey," she explained. "So, I honestly actually feel like I'm more in line with Mama Morton. I'm very much the matriarch of my chosen family. And even though I'm not the oldest femme person in my blood family, my mom and my aunt have pretty much relented to me being the matriarch. It's an Encanto situation."

Doctor Who streams on Disney+ Fridays at 7 p.m. ET.

Fire Island, written by and starring Joel Kim Booster, may be inspired by Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, but one scene in particular was taken from Booster's real life.

"The 'Heads-up' scene in Fire Island is ripped from the headlines of my life," Booster, 36, tells Us Weekly exclusively as part of his 25 Things You Don't Know About Me feature. "My friends and I are big on game nights and things get competitive. It's how I found out my boyfriend didn't know who Natalie Imbruglia was."

The movie — which also stars Bowen Yang, Conrad Ricamora, James Scully and Margaret Cho — follows a group of gay friends who go on vacation to Fire Island, an island off of New York known for its queer-friendly community.

The "Heads-Up" scene Booster references follows the group as they play an intense round of the iPhone game, which prompts the players to guess the name of a person, place or thing which can be read on the phone held on the forehead of one player.

The players hilariously try to get Ricamora's character, Will, to guess the name of Marisa Tomei by acting out some of her iconic movie scenes.

"No, the defense is wrong!" Keegan (Tomas Matos) and Luke (Matt Rogers) exclaim, imitating Tomei's line in My Cousin Vinny. "My biological clock is ticking like this and the way this case is going, I ain't ever getting married!"

"That's actually the problem with Hollywood," Luke adds. "It's people like you who forget about Marisa Tomei, but they remember Alicia Vikander."

After much speculation about a possible exit, Kyle Richards was spotted filming The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills season 14.

Kyle, 55, was spotted in front of the Bravo cameras at Sutton Stracke's Surrealism Ball on Saturday, May 11. Kathy Hilton, Garcelle Beauvais, Erika Jayne and rumored newcomer Bozoma Saint John were among the familiar ladies filming RHOBH at Sutton's home for the event, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the surrealist movement.

"Let's do this

," Richards captioned photos of herself via Instagram on Sunday, May 12, in her black Alexandre Vauthier gown with antlers and flowers in her hair. Several attendees posted on social media to show the cameras filming Richards alongside the other women as they watched YellaCatt perform.

Kyle is the only RHOBH cast member who has starred on the show since season 1 premiered in 2010. Her fellow OGs, Taylor Armstrong, Camille Grammer, Adrienne Maloof, Kim Richards and Lisa Vanderpump, have all left the show behind, making Kyle RHOBH's sole through line.

However, not every cast member from last season is back. Crystal Kung Minkoff confirmed her departure from the franchise via Instagram video on April 15. Along with Kyle and Crystal, 41, season 13 starred Erika, Garcelle, Sutton, Dorit Kemsley and Annemarie Wiley.

Former 'Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' Stars: Where Are They Now?

Speculation about Kyle's possible departure came after a challenging year for the Bravolebrity. Season 13 of RHOBH, which premiered in October 2023, focused heavily on Kyle's martial woes with Mauricio Umansky. After facing criticism from her costars about her desire to keep her relationship strife private, news of Kyle's separation from Mauricio, 53, came to light during the season finale. (Us Weekly confirmed in July 2023 that Kyle and Mauricio had split after 27 years of marriage.)

Kyle has spoken openly about the emotional toll that season 13 took on her. During a March appearance on the "Let's Talk Off Camera With Kelly Ripa" podcast, she slammed the way her costars treated her while filming the latest installment of RHOBH.

"I mean, my friends were my therapists, but the way they came at me, it was not from a loving place or a friend that said, 'Do you need someone? Are you OK? Is everything OK? Do you need anything?'" Kyle said. "It was unbelievable, honestly. It felt inhumane. … I was like, 'Can you not give me some grace?'"

Kyle Richards and Mauricio Umansky's Relationship Timeline

Kyle also said during a March appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen that it's "nobody's f—king business" why she and Mauricio called it quits.

"With any marriage, there's issues that you have. They come up. You get busy, you've got kids," she explained. "Some of the issues never went away, they were never worked on. Something, like I said in my interview, happened where I did lose my trust."

While season 13 was a uniquely difficult one for Kyle, the actress told Extra last month that whether or not she signs on for another season is "always something I decide last-minute." However, she also admitted that she's feeling the weight of her reality TV fame more than ever.

Kyle Richards and Morgan Wade's Friendship Timeline

"I think this season, particularly, because I had been so under the microscope, not just with the cast but in the public eye, it's been very challenging to navigate through that when I'm just trying to figure out my life myself," she said.

Kyle and Mauricio share daughters Alexia, 27, Sophia, 24, and Portia, 16. Kyle also shares daughter Farrah, 35, with ex-husband Guraish Aldjufrie.
