On April 5, 1994, Kurt Cobain, the lead singer and guitarist of the rock band Nirvana, took his own life at his home in Seattle, Washington, at the age of 27.

Kurt Cobain rose to fame in the early 1990s as the frontman of Nirvana. Along with bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl, Cobain defined the 1990s grunge movement by blending punk's raw energy with melodic melancholy, a subgenre of alternative rock that started in the Pacific Northwest. With the release of their second album, Nevermind, and the hit single "Smells Like Teen Spirit," Nirvana transformed into a worldwide phenomenon.

Cobain was often called the "spokesman of Generation X." However, he frequently felt uncomfortable with this title. He struggled with the pressures of sudden fame, his health, and drug addiction.

In the weeks leading up to his death, Cobain's struggles became more visible. In March 1994, while on tour in Europe, he was hospitalized in Rome following a drug overdose. After returning to Seattle, he entered a rehabilitation center but left shortly after.

On April 5, 1994, Cobain went into a room above the garage of his Seattle home. It was there that he died from a self-inflicted shotgun wound. His body was not discovered until three days later, on April 8, by an electrician who had arrived to install a security system.

Near his body, police found a suicide note addressed to "Boddah," Cobain's imaginary childhood friend. In the note, he expressed that he had lost the excitement of listening to and creating music. He also mentioned his love for his wife and their young daughter.

When the news of his death broke, thousands of fans gathered in Seattle Center for a public memorial. A recording of his wife, Courtney Love, reading parts of his suicide note was played for the crowd. The grief was so intense that many cities set up crisis hotlines to help fans cope with the loss, particularly in the Seattle area.

Even though his career was short, Kurt Cobain's impact on music remains massive. Nirvana has changed the landscape of rock music, moving it toward a more honest, alternative style.

The Kurt Cobain Memorial Committee was created in May 2004 as a nonprofit organization created to honor his memory. Founded by author Jeff Burlingame and Aberdeen City Councilman Paul Fritts, the committee was established to create a lasting memorial for Cobain, including a memorial park and a youth community center.

The committee created a sign in Aberdeen in 2005 that reads, "Welcome to Aberdeen—Come As You Are" as a tribute to Cobain.
