Sinister director Scott Derrickson noted that James Ransone was omitted from the Oscars' "In Memoriam" segment that was broadcast on March 15

Ransone, who died in December 2025, was mentioned on the Oscars' website alongside other omitted stars, including James Van Der Beek and Eric Dane

The Oscars received backlash after omitting several stars from its broadcast including Van Der Beek, Dane, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Robert Carradine and more

Director Scott Derrickson is making sure James Ransone gets his flowers.

The Sinister and Black Phone filmmaker, 59, shared a special tribute to Ransone, who died by suicide at the age of 46 in December 2025, after he was left out of the 2026 Oscars' "In Memoriam" segment during the broadcast on March 15.

Derrickson shared a photo of Ransone sitting on a chair in a room with dark green walls in a post on X on Tuesday, March 17. Alongside the photo, he wrote, "The Oscars In Memoriam ignored him but I cannot. He was my friend. I put him in five films."

"In early January I buried James "PJ" Ransone after he committed suicide… He was a complex, funny, talented, and undeniably reckless person. He was wildly alive and deeply loved," the director continued.

"I know he said some infuriating things online, but the last time I saw him, he cried with regret for all of that. 'I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings,' he said," Derrickson concluded his post, adding, "Please don't trash him here. He is dearly missed."

In response to his post on X, one fan wrote, "A human, a talent sorely missed. Thanks for this Scott."

Another chimed in, writing, "It's infuriating how many people the academy left out of the In Memoriam… There were so many people missing…"

During the show, Ransone was notably absent from the segment, which featured tributes to Rob and Michele Reiner, Robert Redford, Diane Keaton and Catherine O'Hara. (The Oscars did however pay tribute to the It: Chapter Two actor on its website.)

After the Oscars' "In Memoriam" segment aired, several fans went online to question the omission of several stars that had died prior to the ceremony, including James Van Der Beek, Eric Dane, Brigitte Bardot, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Robert Carradine and more.

One fan wrote on X in response to Van Der Beek's omission from the ceremony: "James Van Der Beek not getting mentioned in the Oscars In Memoriam reel should be a crime."

Another questioned on X, "No Eric Dane or James Van Der Beek tribute???? Huh???"

A source with direct knowledge of the Oscars told TMZ that an executive committee representing every branch considers the list submitted of industry members who have died over the past year and makes recommendations for who should be shown on the telecast based on the show run time.

However, all the submissions are shared on the Oscars website and will remain there for a year.
