**Warning: This article contains spoilers from *The Mighty Nein* episode 4, "The Mighty Nein."**

Auli'i Cravalho, the voice behind Disney's Moana, got an early preview of the impending fan reaction to her big event on *The Mighty Nein*.

She received a screener of the season's fourth episode in advance of an exclusive interview with **. Her partner was watching it in bed as Cravalho's character, Toya, a singing elf girl and wrangler to the Devil Toad carnival attraction, dies.

"He went, 'Wait, wait! That's not supposed to happen,'" the actress recalls. "And I went, 'No, no, no. I don't come back from this.' And he went, 'What do you *mean* you don't come back from this?!'"

Cravalho is a longtime subscriber of Critical Role on YouTube, but it slipped her mind how, in the original *Mighty Nein* tabletop campaign that livestreamed on the channel, Toya doesn't meet her maker. With this tweak to the animated TV adaptation, "I am very excited for fans to be put on their asses because what else is different now?" she says. "It changes the game of where it goes from here. Anything is possible. Anyone could die."

Cravalho appears gleeful as she says all this, while giggling, grinning, and twiddling her fingers together. "When I first got the initial email that I would be killed off, I went, 'Perfect!'" she continues. "It's gruesome and gory. There's *blood* in this? People *swear* in this show? Sign me up!"

Mighty Nein

She's also quite proud of this moment, as it's the rallying event that brings the group together to become the titular Mighty Nein. Beau (Marisha Ray), Caleb (Liam O'Brien), Molly (Taliesin Jaffe), Jester (Laura Bailey), Fjord (Travis Willingham), and Nott (Sam Riegel) all bust out of prison to rescue Toya from the Devil Toad, but find she's possessed by the creature, which is the only thing keeping her alive.

"The stakes have risen so much higher that I don't think we're having fun anymore," Cravalho comments. "That puts our heroes on a very different trajectory than self-serving, self-pleasuring. Now they're in it together for revenge or for the greater good, whatever it might be."

And Toya's death could've been much worse. "There was one point where I was meant to be killed off mid-song," Cravalho shares. "I remember they just let the silence ring for a second...It didn't make it into the final cut, but I went, 'Wow! They literally went for the jugular. I'm gone.'"

There is something uniquely upsetting to even hearing the voice of Moana being killed off in such a gnarly manner. And then, of course, if you're going to cast Cravalho, you've gotta let her sing first.

To quell the Devil Toad, as first heard in episode 3, Toya sings a strange melody, which then becomes even more dissonant in episode 4 when Cravalho performs as possessed Toya. The actress recorded her first session on March 21, 2024, at which point all she had were "vocal stems," pre-mixed audio recordings of her part.

"I always receive vocal stems of a man singing my role, which is fine, but if you hear what Toya sings, it runs the entire gamut of my range," Cravalho explains. "Shoutout to that one person, though, that was my scratch voice, that was a fully grown male who was like, 'Listen, if you can sing that octave, that would be great.' So I got into the booth and you're singing that same thing in three octaves."

Possessed Toya, which she describes as more "gravelly," is much closer to Cravalho's actual speaking voice. She acknowledges most people might be surprised to hear that because Moana rests in a higher timbre. Then you hear her fiendish cackle when talking about Toya dying and you get it.

"I just like playing characters and acting like a little gremlin in the booth," Cravalho says. "No one sees me except the animators. So I'm just feeding the animators. If any of those clips from the booth end up in BTS, I'm f---ed 'cause I look insane."

New episodes of *The Mighty Nein* continue to drop weekly at midnight on Tuesday nights on Amazon's Prime Video.**
