Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin’s spouse on Saturday appeared to publicly break together with her husband over help for Greta Thunberg's climate change activism.
“I stand with Greta on this difficulty. (I don’t have a degree in economics either),” actress Louise Linton wrote in a now-deleted Instagram submit after Mnuchin chided the 17-year-old’s call for governments to finish their help of fossil fuels at the World Financial Forum in Davos, Switzerland, saying she should attend school and research economics.
“Is she the chief economist? Who's she, I’m confused,” Mnuchin was quoted as saying throughout a news conference before later claiming he was joking.
Thunberg responded to Mnunchin’s apparent dismissal of her by tweeting out a graph from a U.N. report on the world’s remaining carbon price range, a subject she also addressed in her Davos speech.
“My hole yr ends in August, however it doesn’t take a university degree in economics to understand that our remaining 1,5° carbon finances and ongoing fossil gasoline subsidies and investments don’t add up,” Thunberg wrote without addressing Mnuchin by identify.
“So both you inform us the right way to obtain this mitigation or explain to future generations and those already affected by the local weather emergency why we should always abandon our local weather commitments,” she added.
Linton echoed Thunberg’s place in her submit.
“We have to drastically scale back our use of fossil fuels,” she wrote. “Sustain the struggle @gretathunberg.”
The publish was deleted after about 30 minutes in response to journalist Olivia Nuzzi, who flagged the submit to her followers.
Mnuchin isn’t the only member of the Trump administration to mock Thunberg, who has gained worldwide fame for her help of local weather change initiatives.
