California Democrats persuaded voters to let them redraw the state's congressional map so the party could potentially gain five seats in the U.S. House to counter GOP redistricting in Texas. Tuesday’s primary will be the first indication of whether that will pay off.

The state’s unusual primary system, in which the top two vote-getters advance to the general election regardless of party, means Democrats have a chance of effectively missing out on a pickup in the San Diego suburbs, where Republican Rep. Darrell Issa's district was redrawn to give it a slight Democratic lean.

Issa retired, and a Republican San Diego County supervisor, Jim Desmond, stepped in to run. So did an avalanche of nine Democrats — so many that some fear the Democratic vote will be split among them, leaving Desmond and the only other GOP candidate, Jim O’Neil, as the top vote-getters. Under that scenario, Democrats would be locked out of the November general election.

“After millions of dollars and a nationwide effort to redraw these districts in response to Texas, Democrats being shut out would be a nightmare,” said Ammar Campa-Najjar, a former Obama administration official who is one of the Democrats running.

California has been the bright spot for Democrats in a redistricting war kicked off by President Donald Trump to help his party retain control of the House. After Texas redrew its map to make as many as five more seats winnable for the GOP, California voters allowed Democrats to suspend their state’s own independent redistricting commission and create a new map in retaliation.

But when Virginia Democrats tried to replicate that, they were blocked by their state Supreme Court. Meanwhile the conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court gutted a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, letting Republicans eliminate some majority-Black congressional districts in the South.

Campa-Najjar, San Diego City Councilwoman Marni von Wilpert and investor Brandon Riker, who is financing his own campaign, are the most prominent Democrats in the race for the seat vacated by Issa. Many Democrats are optimistic their voters will coalesce around one candidate and set up a competitive election against Desmond in the fall.

The 48th district would not be the only competitive fall race for Democrats.

In the Central Valley, they redrew the seat held by Republican Rep. David Valadao to make it even more Democratic. Valadao is a survivor of several targeted Democratic campaigns and one of two remaining Republican House members who voted to impeach Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

He's expected to make it to the general election, so the primary will determine which Democrat faces him — state Assemblywoman Jasmeet Bains, a moderate backed by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, or Randy Villegas, a political science professor at College of the Sequoias and a school board member who represents the party’s liberal wing.

The schism between establishment Democrats and a younger, insurgent progressive wing is a defining characteristic of many of this year's primaries.

In a safe Democratic district in San Francisco, Scott Wiener, a state lawmaker and former member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, is considered likely to make the November race to replace retiring former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The suspense is over whether he will face Saikat Charkrabati, a wealthy former technology entrepreneur who supported Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez’s insurgent primary in 2018, or Supervisor Connie Chan, who was endorsed by Pelosi.

In Sacramento, city council member Mai Vang is challenging 81-year-old Rep. Doris Matsui, who succeeded her late husband after his death in 2005.

Rep. Brad Sherman, whose Southern California district stretches from the San Fernando Valley to Malibu, is being challenged by Democrat Jake Levine, a 42-year-old lawyer who argues that it is time to move on from the 15-term congressman.

And in a redrawn district that stretches from Napa Valley into conservative Northern California farming communities, 14-term Democratic Rep. Mike Thompson has drawn a younger challenger, former venture capitalist Eric Jones.

California's congressional primaries also will determine the fate of Republicans targeted in the Democratic redraw.

In Southern California, sitting Republican Reps. Ken Calvert and Young Kim, were drawn into the same conservative district and are battling over their pro-Trump credentials.

In the Sacramento suburbs, Rep. Kevin Kiley, who left the GOP to become an independent and a critic of partisan gerrymandering, hopes to survive in one of the two Democratic-leaning districts where his more conservative district’s voters were scattered.

Meanwhile in the San Francisco suburbs, six Democrats and two Republicans are running for the seat formerly held by Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell, who resigned and ended his gubernatorial bid amid sexual harassment allegations. The top two vote-getters advance to the November ballot to fill the seat starting in 2027, while a special election will be held June 18 for the remainder of Swalwell's current term.

PARIS (AP) — Wilting in the summer sun, a line of tourists waits to climb Notre Dame cathedral and meet its gargoyles.

Four meters (13 feet) beneath them, a team of archaeologists is digging the other way — straight down and back in time, to Roman Paris 2,000 years ago.

In 2019, fire brought Notre Dame’s spire crashing down as the world watched. The cathedral was rebuilt and reopened in late 2024, and now Paris wants to soften the hot, bare square in front of it with trees and shade.

But in a city this old, the soil cannot be turned until what lies beneath it is excavated, in case it is damaged during works.

So a slice of Notre Dame’s forecourt has become an excavation site — an open pit ringed by barriers and crossed by a wooden walkway, a few steps from the line-up.

A modern Da Vinci Code

French media have dubbed it the “dig of the century.”

“It’s a rare opportunity for us to work on something that’s tangibly going to make a difference to the history of Paris,” Lucie Altenburg, a conservator with the Paris archaeology unit, told The .

Among the hundreds of objects already found: a 4th-century coin stamped with the face of the Emperor Constantine, and shards of medieval pottery painted on the inside with marks no expert has yet deciphered — like a modern Da Vinci Code.

“It makes Notre Dame feel alive again,” said Emily Carter, 34, a tourist from Manchester waiting in line with her two children. “You come to see the cathedral, then realize there’s another city under your feet. That’s almost more moving.”

The first traces appear 50 centimeters (20 inches) down; 4 meters (13 feet) lower, the team is still pulling up the past. Some days they fill 15 crates — from ground that has lain untouched for decades.

Ancient cities have archaeologists monitoring digs

This is the bargain in every old city: the past is not in a museum down the street — it is under the street.

Cities rise. Each age builds on the rubble of the last, and the ground climbs with it; in Rome, it has risen about 9 meters (30 feet) since the empire fell in the 5th century AD.

When Athens built its metro for the 2004 Olympics, it set off the largest excavation in Greek history and turned up tens of thousands of objects, now shown in the stations themselves. Paris is no different.

It all comes from the island in the Seine, the Ile de la Cite, where Paris began.

Centuries later, Notre Dame rose on the same ground.

At the cathedral's birth in 1163, the entire square was packed with medieval houses, split by a single street, said Camille Colonna, the archaeologist leading the dig.

Digging down, her team has reached their cellars — and therefore also the time in history they represent.

Below them lie Merovingian and Carolingian grain pits, from the sixth to the tenth centuries; below those, darker and deeper still, a dense Roman quarter from the fourth and fifth centuries.

Twenty centuries are stacked in 4 meters of earth — or about the height of two-and-a-half Napoleon Bonapartes standing on top of one another.

“Here you can see the layers — medieval Paris, Roman Paris, maybe even before that,” said Yasmine Benali, 22, an archaeology student watching from behind the barriers. “It makes the city feel less like a postcard and more like something still being discovered.”

Coins, ceramics and mysterious markings

The richest finds here come from the foulest place: the deep pits beneath the medieval houses, old latrines that doubled as rubbish dumps.

Out of them the team keeps lifting whole jugs and cups — thrown away centuries ago, yet still intact — among the broken plates and animal bones.

It’s “rare to find complete ceramics,” said Valentine Breloux, an archaeologist with the unit.

Here the soft waste cushioned them, and centuries later they miraculously came up whole.

Then some other objects came that confounded experts. As conservators cleaned what looked like ordinary medieval pottery, they found faint reddish writing painted on the inside — the same mysterious markings on shard after shard.

What they mean has yet to be deciphered.

Of everything she has cleaned from Notre Dame, Breloux said, these are the most “astonishing.”

Coins can help date the layers

The coins came up as black discs, eaten by rust. But under an X-ray, a face returned: it was Constantine, the Roman emperor who ruled in the early 300s AD.

Such objects also "can be invaluable in giving us the date of the (underground) layer,” Altenburg said.

The Roman finds are the ones the archaeologists value most — the deepest, oldest, and least understood. In Roman times, the town was called Lutetia, and its center lay across the river, on the Left Bank.

As the Roman empire collapsed, people pulled back to the Ile de la Cite, where Notre Dame would later rise, and fortified the island with walls of stone taken from earlier buildings.

Colonna’s team found some proof: a Roman doorstep found in the dig, taken from a much bigger building, carried over, turned upside down, and laid in a road as paving.

Paris houses thousands of finds in an archaeology center

Every find leaves the pit and travels north, to the city’s archaeology center — what Colonna calls “a huge archaeological store," a treasure house of Paris.

For archaeologists, the cathedral dig is a rare treat. In France, like elsewhere, they work only where building work is about to begin — a bit like how industrial quarry workers end up unearthing dinosaur remains.

"This only happens because the city of Paris decided it wanted to beautify the area," Altenburg said.

The new square should be mostly finished by 2028: a kind of woodland clearing, with 160 new trees and a thin film of water sliding over the stone to cool it in summer — part of how Paris is bracing for ever hotter summers induced by global warming.

The tourists who now wait in the bare sun beneath the gargoyles will, in a few summers, line up in the shade.

The old underground parking lot will reopen as a visitor center looking onto the Seine.

Until then, the Notre Dame team wants to go deeper still — past the Romans, toward whoever came before them, the Gauls who gave the city its first name.

“The hope is that we are able to go back in time even further than we’ve ever been before,” Altenburg said.

BANGKOK, June 2 (Reuters) - Cambodia said on Tuesday it has informed the United Nations ‌and Thailand that it has launched a ‌compulsory conciliation process under international law aimed at resolving a long-running maritime boundary dispute with Bangkok.

The move follows a Thai government decision last month to unilaterally terminate a 2001 agreement with Cambodia that provided ‌a framework for negotiations over the disputed area in the Gulf of Thailand where the two countries' maritime claims overlap.

"We have taken this step to protect Cambodia's sovereignty and maritime rights in accordance with international law," Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said.

Thailand's ‌cancellation was part of a campaign pledge by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who won re-election in February on a wave of nationalistic sentiment, after two rounds of deadly military clashes ‌between the countries last year along their disputed border.

Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, ‌or UNCLOS, a compulsory conciliation process allows a panel of independent experts to examine a dispute and make recommendations, although its findings are not ‌legally binding on either party.

There’s a lot of pressure involved when it comes to performing live.

Country rocker Morgan Wallen is making headlines for all the wrong reasons (again) after he threw a bit of a tantrum during a show on May 29.

Wallen let his emotions get the better of him after experiencing technical difficulties during a Denver stop on his Still the Problem Tour. In fan-captured footage, the singer is seen jostling and manhandling his piano before eventually tipping it over.

But Wallen isn't the first musician to find himself caught up in an intense moment during a live show. Whether it's the pressure of the moment or the demands of fame itself, sometimes the only place to freak out is in front of thousands of onlookers.

Below, we're looking back at eight of the most disastrous onstage meltdowns in recent memory.

01 of 08

Billie Joe Armstrong

In September 2012, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong was involved in a notorious incident during the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas. While the band played their hit song “Basket Case,” Armstrong became upset when a teleprompter informed him he had one minute left to perform.

Armstrong stopped the song and launched into a profanity-laden tirade in which he declared “I’m not f---ing Justin Bieber” before smashing his guitar and storming off the stage.

Seven months later, Armstrong opened up to Rolling Stone about how the incident (and some undisclosed health issues) was the result of an addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs.

Las Vegas was ultimately the breaking point, he explained. “I was at my pill-taking height at that time, medicating the s--- out of myself because I couldn't sleep,” he said. He had previously been sober for a year before falling off the wagon.

More than a decade later, Armstrong remains clean and willing to poke fun at the incident.

M.I.A.

In May 2026, rapper M.I.A. was fired from Kid Cudi’s Rebel Ragers tour after she was booed onstage during a rant about immigrants. The remarks stemmed from her reference to a past song she wrote about being “illegal.”

Cudi addressed her firing in an Instagram post: “I told my management to send a notice to her team before we started tour that I didn’t want anything offensive at my shows, cuz I already knew what time it was, and I was assured things were understood."

M.I.A. responded to the firing in a lengthy post on X. “DO NOT GAS LIGHT MY WORDS. THAT IS THE WORK OF SATAN,” she wrote, adding, “I DON'T NEED THIS VIRTUE SIGNAL ERA TO ALL OF A SUDDEN ERASE AN ENTIRE LIFE I'VE LED.”

As of June 2026, M.I.A. is reportedly suing Cudi for allegedly breaching their contract. The "Paper Planes" singer claims that her removal from the tour constituted “intentional interference with contractual relations," according to Pitchfork.

03 of 08

Justin Bieber

The “Baby” singer is no stranger to bad behavior, but in 2012 that behavior spilled into his performance in Oslo, Norway.

Apparently, Bieber began wiping the floor of the stage shortly after starting the show with “Boyfriend.” He then left the stage after only playing that one song.

Fan-captured footage shows Bieber leaning toward the audience and saying, “Yo, listen to me. Are you listening? I’m trying to wipe the floor. Gimme a sec, yo.” He then leaves the stage. “Guys, never mind. I’m done. I’m not doing the show. I’m not doing the show,” he says.

Fans were understandably upset. Bieber posted an apology to Instagram shortly after the incident. “Sadly it’s Been a rough week for me, long days no sleep, while having to be ‘on’ as they would say for cameras, fans etc.”

He added that “chose to end the show as the people in the front row would not listen.”

04 of 08

Perry Farrell

In September 2024, Jane's Addiction imploded onstage during a gig in Boston. Video of the incident shows frontman Perry Farrell throwing a punch at guitarist Dave Navarro.

The band canceled its tour days later, with bandmates Navarro, Eric Avery, and Stephen Perkins blaming it on a "continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell."

In his own statement, Farrell apologized for the incident. "This weekend has been incredibly difficult and after having the time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family and friends for my actions during Friday’s show," Farrell wrote on Instagram. "Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior and I take full accountability for how I chose to handle the situation."

In July of the following year, Navarro, Avery, and Perkins filed a $10 million lawsuit against Farrell, accusing the singer of assault and battery. Farrell denied the allegations and sought to dismiss the suit. In December 2025, the lawsuit was dismissed after the bandmates reached a settlement.

That same month, the band officially called it quits. “I've reflected on it and know I didn't handle myself the way I should have," Farrell wrote in an Instagram post. "I apologize to our patrons and my bandmates for losing my temper and for disrupting the show. Jane's Addiction has been at the center of my life for decades.”

05 of 08

Scott Stapp

More than 20 years ago, Creed performed a notoriously disastrous show in Chicago.

While onstage at the Allstate Arena in 2002, lead singer Scott Stapp left the stage mid-song multiple times, rolled around on the floor, and even appeared to pass out.

In a 2014 interview with Louder, Stapp said that a confluence of factors contributed to the incident, including a car accident that resulted in an addiction to painkillers. He also noted his troubled upbringing and a growing rift between his bandmates. Chicago was the breaking point.

“I regret that night in Chicago,” Stapp reflected. “I was hurt at that point in time by those guys, but my perception was off: I was drinking from the time I woke up ‘til the time I went to sleep, and under the influence of pills as well, and that was something I should have never let out publicly. And I’ve since apologized and done my best to make amends. That was an error, and I always will regret that and wish I hadn’t done it. But that was the first time where what was going on behind the scenes spilled out.”

Caleb Followill

Credit: Martin Philbey/Redferns

In 2011, Kings of Leon canceled the remainder of their U.S. tour dates following a notorious performance in Dallas, Tex.

The band cut their show short after lead singer Caleb Followill announced to the audience: “I’m gonna go backstage and I’m gonna vomit, I’m gonna drink a beer and I’m gonna come back out and play three more songs.”

Followill left and never returned, forcing the band to apologize. “Caleb’s just a little unfit to play the rest of the show. We love you guys so much, but I know you guys f---ing hate us,” said bassist Jared Followill. “I’m so sorry. It’s really not our fault, it’s Caleb. He can’t play the rest of the show. We will be back as soon as possible.”

They claimed the tour was being canceled due to exhaustion, but Jared invited speculation at the time by writing on social media there were "problems in our band bigger than not drinking enough Gatorade.”

Still, in 2014, they again cited "exhaustion" as the reason for the cancellation. “I think people think it was more of an argument between us and that we got in this huge fight and it blew up," guitarist Matt Followill told Louder. "If anything, we were arguing with touring, we were so exhausted and didn’t want to do it. We hit rock bottom. We had been touring forever.”

Kid Rock

Who doesn’t want their birthday celebration interrupted by a Kid Rock meltdown?

In February 2025, at a Nashville event for Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan's birthday, the “All Summer Long” singer was brought onto the stage as a surprise guest. Things started well enough, with Kid Rock performing a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary,” but it ended with an expletive-laced tantrum.

After asking the audience to join him in clapping along, Kid Rock became upset when he felt not enough people were participating. He stopped the song and, according to fan-captured video, said, "If you ain't gonna clap, we ain't gonna sing. That's how it's gonna go."

Rock tried to get them to clap a second time, but too few people joined in for his liking. "You know what? F--- y'all. If you ain't gonna clap, I'm gone," he shouted before storming off the stage.

Entertainment Weekly did not hear back after reaching out to Kid Rock's reps for comment.

Axl Rose

Axl Rose's notoriously bratty antics are the stuff of legend. One of his most infamous onstage meltdowns occurred during a 1991 Guns N' Roses concert in Maryland Heights, Mo., that has since become known as the Riverport Riot.

Trouble began when Rose became irate at a fan taking photos of him. During “Rocket Queen,” he demanded that security take away the man's camera. When they didn’t do as he instructed, the singer jumped offstage to confront the fan. A scuffle ensued, effectively putting an end to a show that had already started two hours late.

“Well, thanks to the lame-ass security, I'm going home!" Rose reportedly said while being dragged offstage.

Frustrated fans turned violent, causing roughly $200,000 in damage over the next several hours, including damage to Guns N' Roses equipment. More than 60 people were injured.

Rose was eventually arrested in connection with the riot and later found guilty of assault and property damage. He was sentenced to two years' probation and ordered to donate $50,000 to local charities.

Kim Kardashian and her daughter North West are showing off a new matching style.

On Monday, June 1, Kardashian, 45, shared a number of recent photos in an Instagram post — and one shot featured her and her 12-year-old daughter trying out a new matching style.

Kardashian and North could be seen in the selfie rocking matching sets of sparkling grills, which appeared to be diamond-studded, as they bared their teeth for the camera.

The selfie also showed North's signature bright blue hair and studded nails, which she used to point out her glittering mouthpiece.

"lately," Kardashian captioned her post, which also features shots of her and ex-husband Kanye West's other kids — Psalm, 7, Chicago, 8, Saint, 10 — and her boyfriend Lewis Hamilton.

North, whom Kardashian also shares with West, 48, has made headlines for her bold style choices in recent months.

In May, the pre-teen shared a series of selfies to Instagram that in which she could be seen with a new collection of at least five piercings on her hand and fingers in addition to another on her wrist, though it was unclear whether all of the piercings are real.

When North was first spotted with a dermal piercing on her hand in September 2025, fans were quick to call out Kardashian for allowing her preteen daughter to undergo body modifications.

In October 2025, the SKIMS co-founder shared on an episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast that she does occasionally regret allowing North to wear certain outfits.

"I'm like, okay, we're never wearing that again,” she said in October. “Unfortunately, we made that mistake in front of the whole world.”

Elsewhere in her Instagram carousel, Kardashian shared more photos of her kids. She could be seen posing with son Saint, who held up a peace sign as he showed off his signature blond hair. A selfie with son Psalm and daughter Chicago was included, showing them playing and cuddling up with their mom at home with toys surrounding them.

The mom of four could also be seen spending some time with Hamilton, as they biked along a city street together while posing for a selfie.

A source recently told PEOPLE that the Kardashian has made the decision to let her Formula 1 driver boyfriend, 41, spend time with her kids — which shows just "how much she trusts him," as she's "very selective" with who she brings around her children.

The Kardashians star, 45, and the race car driver, 41, went Instagram-official with their relationship back in April after rumors of their romance picked up in March when Hamilton left a flirty comment under Kardashian's posts. Later that month, a source confirmed to PEOPLE that the pair were vacationing together in Tokyo alongside Kardashian's four kids.

"Kim's very selective when it comes to the people she allows around her kids. She's very protective of them and doesn't take new introductions lightly," the insider told PEOPLE. "The fact that Lewis has spent time with the kids reflects how much she trusts him."

The source added that Kardashian "never wanted to rush anything" between her and Hamilton, emphasizing that she's "very happy" with their relationship.

"She's never wanted to rush anything, but she's very happy with where things are," the insider said. "He's a great guy."

Eugene Levy pays tribute to Catherine O'Hara at Canadian Screen Awards: 'She made us proud to be Canadian'

As Canadian films and TV were celebrated at the 2026 Canadian Screen Awards on Sunday night in Toronto, Eugene Levy took the stage to speak about his dear friend and frequent collaborator, the late Catherine O'Hara. Levy said their friendship is something he’ll cherish for the rest of his life.

Levy recalled first working with O’Hara at Toronto’s Second City in 1974. Saying that there was “no denying” that she was “extraordinarily gifted” in comedy.

“Getting laughs for her was second nature. She made it look easy,” Levy said.

The actor went on to talk about working with O’Hara on the hit series Schitt’s Creek.

“Her six glorious years of working on Schitt’s Creek gave all of us on the show the unique opportunity to witness up close the sheer brilliance of her Moira Rose. A creation that will go down as one of the most iconic characters in the history of television comedy,” Levy said. “And it was Moira Rose, along with … hit films like Beetlejuice and Home Alone that helped make her one of this country’s greatest exports.”

“She made us proud to be Canadian. … Her email handle was ‘sorry, eh.’ And there was no place on earth she loved as much as her idyllic island cottage in Muskoka. You couldn’t pry her out of there with a crowbar. Her body of work alone has earned her legendary status in the entertainment industry, but it was who she was as a person that endeared her to millions. For me, she was the one person I spent the most time working with over our 50-year career, and that is something I take great pride in being able to say. Catherine O'Hara was simply the best.”

O’Hara died on Jan. 30 in Los Angeles, at the age of 71.
