- Valerie Bertinelli recently teamed up with psychologist Dr. Ramani Durvasula to unpack some of her past relationships.

- At one point, the Food Network alum recalled abandoning "all [her] friends and family" for a former partner.

- "I felt like I was being torn in two," she said of trying to juggle her loved ones in the midst of a toxic relationship.

Valerie Bertinelli is breaking down the shame she felt after letting a toxic relationship change her life.

The celebrity chef recently joined psychologist Dr. Ramani Durvasula for an episode of her *Navigating Narcissism *podcast and during their conversation, Bertinelli confessed to cutting ties with her loved ones over a past partner.

"I abandoned all of my friends and my family and I knew as it was happening, I'm like, ‘This is wrong,'" Bertinelli, 66, admitted.

She said that while she tried "desperately to hold on to the connections" with her family and close girlfriends, she also had the sense that her love life would be "miserable" with them sticking around.

"They were gonna be pissed off," she recalled. "So how do I keep them not angry but still let my family know how much I love them?"

The Food Network alum added, "I felt like I was being torn in two."

Dr. Ramani then weighed in, telling Bertinelli that part of self-abandonment involves "abandoning the spaces where we can replenish."

Bertinelli confirmed, "For me, [that space] is my friends and family. And hanging out with my son and my brother and his wife, my daughter-in-law. That replenishes me."

Ramani said that while it may have looked like Bertinelli was just abandoning those around her, she was also abandoning herself by distancing herself from the people who provide her comfort. She added that in an "unhealthy" relationship, that is exactly what a toxic partner would want.

"I don't understand why, though," Bertinelli interjected. "Because it makes me a better person, being around the people I love."

Dr. Ramani replied, "In an unhealthy relationship, they don't want you to be a better person. They want you to be a controllable person."

Bertinelli, who did not name the former partner in question, said they often told her that she had control but noted that it never actually felt that way.

"I'm trying to juggle balls here but nobody's happy," she recalled of her other relationships during that period.

Bertinelli was previously married to Van Halen frontman Eddie Van Halen, with whom she shares son Wolfgang. The former couple were married from 1981 to 2007. Eddie died from cancer in October 2020 at age 65.

Bertinelli later wed financial planner Tom Vitale in 2011 and the couple remained together until 2022. Most recently, she dated writer Mike Goodnough for several months before splitting in November 2024.

Also during her conversation with Dr. Ramani, Bertinelli reflected on her marriages, sharing that she still feels "a lot of shame" over the way she let herself be treated.

“You didn't allow it because you didn't know what was happening, right?” Dr. Ramani prompted.

"I know I'm emotionally intelligent and I know that if I said, ‘Hey, don't speak to me,' which I've said, ‘Don't speak to me that way.' But then I just allow it anyway," Bertinelli responded. "So at a certain point, it has to be my responsibility to say 'I've had enough. I'm walking away now.'"

***Get your daily dose of entertainment news, celebrity updates, and what to watch with our ******EW Dispatch newsletter******.***

When Dr. Ramani suggested that walking away could prompt "even harder pushback," from "gaslighting" to "manipulation," Bertinelli said, "And that's where my whole responsibility is to not engage again. Which I finally did."

Love movies? Live for TV? USA TODAY's Watch Party newsletter has all the best recommendations, delivered right to your inbox. Sign up now and be one of the cool kids.

Unless you’ve been held captive by a Wampa, crash-landed a TIE Fighter on Jakku or were eaten by the Sarlacc – though Boba Fett did come back like a champ from that doomsday scenario – it’s probably not news that there's a fresh "Star Wars" movie on cinema screens.

Starring Pedro Pascal and Sigourney Weaver, "The Mandalorian and Grogu" (in theaters May 22) continues the adventures of the armored warrior and Baby Yoda from their Disney+ series "The Mandalorian." And if you're feeling the galactic need, that's the streaming service where you can also watch (or rewatch) all 11 previous "Star Wars" films – the nine-chapter Skywalker Saga, plus a couple of spinoffs – in the blockbuster space franchise.

But which "Star Wars" is the best of the best? These are the rankings you’re looking for.

12. 'Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace' (1999)

Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson, far left) gives a galactic history lesson to Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) in "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace."

George Lucas’ prequels get a bad rap and, well, they kind of deserve it at times. Especially this one. What basically is a two-hour trailer for the rest of Anakin Skywalker’s story is kind of a mess – he was immaculately conceived? What’s this about midichlorians and the Force? The pod-race set piece is fun the first five times yet gets old quick, Darth Maul is the coolest guy in the movie and he's in it for all of three minutes, trade negotiations are not the way to start a sci-fi movie, and as for Jar Jar Binks … yeah. One thing it does do well is set up the political atmosphere that leads to the Empire and introduces Anakin as the chosen one who will bring balance to the Force. Just not in the way anybody expects.

11. 'Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones' (2002)

There are so many sleek special effects used in this thing that you miss the trash heaps and spit-and-gum filmmaking of Lucas’ original movies. Also, Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman have ZERO chemistry as doomed lovers Anakin and Padmé. They have a picnic in the middle of the movie, battle monsters together on Geonosis and get married at the end, and yet even a modicum of actual romance isn’t to be found. That all said, "Clones" isn’t a bad film and it’s pretty good whenever Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi is around. His and Anakin’s chase after Zam Wesell is a scene from the great Jedi buddy-cop comedy we never got, and the discovery of the Republic’s clone army on the rainy planet Kamino is obviously important. (Never forget, though: Stormtroopers > clone troopers.)

10. 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' (2019)

It could also be called "Star Wars: Attack of the Callbacks" since it bends over backward – and sacrifices a lot of good storytelling and fun new characters (we totally heart little Babu Frik) – to pay homage to familiar faces and aspects from previous films. Jedi-in-training Rey (Daisy Ridley), reluctant hero Finn (John Boyega) and X-wing warrior Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) lead the ragtag Resistance against a returning Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) in a film that's full of logic fumbles and muddies the focus of the third and final trilogy.

The evolving relationship between Rey and the First Order's hotheaded Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) goes some interesting places, and director J.J. Abrams' "Skywalker" is one last tribute to General Leia Organa (the late Carrie Fisher) and the way certain returning characters have molded decades of this expansive story. Hardcore fans will find lots to love and it's plenty entertaining with bombastic spectacle, but "Rise" crashes and burns as an actual finale.

9. 'Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith' (2005)

It’s no coincidence that the prequel that’s closest to the original trilogy in tone, story and theme is the best one. Anakin finally has his full turn to the dark side, though it still seems a little whiplash-y how quickly he goes from broody, anti-authoritarian kid to child-killing, baddest man in the galaxy. And Padmé dying from a broken heart is a little much. However, Yoda takes on Senator Palpatine/Darth Sidious/Emperor in a neato lightsaber battle, when Order 66 comes down it’s a little heartbreaking, and Obi-Wan and Anakin’s violent brawl on Mustafar is arguably the most hellacious in any "Star Wars" film. (Those who miss those two mortal enemies definitely want to watch their rematch in the Disney+ "Obi-Wan Kenobi" series.)

8. 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' (2016)

Felicity Jones as Rebel spy Jyn Erso in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."

For its maiden standalone voyage, "Star Wars" brass blended the old – the Rebel Alliance freaking out about the construction of the Empire’s mighty Death Star – with something new: In this case, a war movie digging into the battlefields on land and in space with insurgents rising up against “the Man.”

The results are a mixed bag. Ex-con Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) heads up the squad of armed misfits to steal the Death Star plans, though a snarky droid ends up being the best character in the bunch (for the record, K-2SO is way cooler than C-3PO). The Empire is full of bickering bureaucrats, which is fun to watch though bad for getting the Death Star done in a timely manner, and Darth Vader power walks into scenes that both undermine his icon status yet also cement it. While the fan service goes too far – for example, the old-school CGI character who is just as distracting as Jar Jar – "Rogue One" does introduce some neato supporting aliens like Admiral Raddus, a military mashup of Patton, Churchill and a lobster.

7. 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' (2026)

The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu jet off to a new adventure in "The Mandalorian and Grogu."

More a compressed season of "The Mandalorian" than a conventional "Star Wars" movie, this big-hearted adventure finds the Mando (Pedro Pascal) and his adopted apprentice Grogu on the hunt for Imperial war lords, going on a mission to rescue Jabba the Hutt's son Rotta (voiced by Jeremy Allen White) and getting on the bad side of the Hutt crime family.

There are aliens and beasts aplenty and quite a few callbacks to the original "Star Wars" trilogy, yet the film also tries a lot of different stylistic tricks to make it stand out. While some don't exactly fly, there's commitment to the weird that works. Mando goes John Wick on robots and Stormtroopers, Grogu gets a long showcase to strut his small stuff, and it's the rare "Star Wars" outing that's proudly a relationship movie rather than a big old-fashioned epic.

6. 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' (2018)

Han (Alden Ehrenreich) finds himself in dire straits in "Solo: A Star Wars Story."

A young Han Solo movie doesn't sound like a great idea ... until you actually see a young Han Solo movie. Mostly free of lightsabers, Jedi and Rebels, "Solo" is a "Star Wars" take on an Indiana Jones jam, and the first movie to tackle the underworld through its most famous antihero. This Han (Alden Ehrenreich) is an idealistic sort willing to go to extreme and illegal lengths to see his girlfriend (Emilia Clarke) again. Han and Chewie (Joonas Suotamo) are awesome together, Han and Lando (Donald Glover) aren't bad either, it boasts a bunch of new creatures and crooks, and the film even ties into "Star Wars" past in surprising fashion.

A note for Ryan Gosling's upcoming "Star Wars: Starfighter": This, not "Rogue One," should be the template for future heroic spinoffs.

5. 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' (2017)

For those who love spectacular space battles, the cute audacity of porgs and bad guys with British accents snarling, “Rebel scum,” there’s a lot to love in writer/director Rian Johnson’s "Episode VIII." Fans have plenty to unpack in a lengthy runtime and "Last Jedi," like other franchise vehicles, demands repeat viewings, but Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is the coolest he’s been since "The Empire Strikes Back." Plus, the next-generation heroes of the Resistance take a great leap in being a real rebellion like we saw in the original trilogy.

Johnson is also winningly subversive, having Luke call out his own past and challenging the foundation that Lucas put in place 40 years ago – one character even says, “Good guys, bad guys. Made-up words.” The galaxy is no longer a hotbed of chosen ones, a place where a nobody, a lowly First Order janitor or a Resistance mechanic, can save the universe – a switch from the days of Anakin and Luke. "Last Jedi" is unsurprisingly dedicated to “our princess” Carrie Fisher, and her integral role speaks volumes to the legacy of the core characters played by her, Hamill and Harrison Ford, yet also points out the need for fresh icons to take the franchise to new heights.

4. 'Star Wars: Return of the Jedi' (1983)

Let's just put this out there now: Ewoks aren’t that bad. And the alien creature quotient is at an all-time high when you toss in Jabba the Hutt’s crew, Admiral Ackbar and Nien Nunb. What makes this movie so special are all the satisfying conclusions. Luke says goodbye to Yoda in a touching moment, Leia finding out that Luke is her brother is emotional but not cloying, the Rebel Alliance vs. Empire space sequence is a highlight, Han Solo is less of a scoundrel than ever, and Luke and Vader’s climactic father-son throwdown is a thing of redemptive wonder. Check yourself for a pulse if you’re not getting the chills after Vader tosses the Emperor down a shaft or when he says, “Let me look on you with my own eyes” to Luke before dying. A perfect ending – at least until ol’ George went and got rid of the Ewoks’ celebratory “Yub nub” song and stuck young Anakin in the Dead Jedi Ghost Club.

3. 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' (2015)

J.J. Abrams introduces the finest characters since fans first laid eyes on Han, Luke and Leia. Daisy Ridley's Rey is wicked smart and a capable hero in a universe with the baddies of the First Order on the warpath. John Boyega's ex-Stormtrooper Finn and Han are brothers from another mother, Oscar Isaac's pilot Poe is as cool and refreshing as a tall glass of blue milk, and Adam Driver's Kylo does his best Vader impression as a maniacal villain with some serious emotional issues. Abrams gets dangerously close to recycling old material, but instead he uses those familiar motifs to set the stage for a (mostly) exciting third trilogy and crafts arguably the best final shot ever in a "Star Wars" film.

2. 'Star Wars' (1977)

Whether Han shot first or not, the original remains the real deal mostly because of all the great character moments. Luke is a whiny farmboy who has big dreams when he looks out over the two-sun horizon of Tatooine and knows his destiny lies beyond. Old “Ben” Kenobi explaining to Luke that Darth Vader “murdered” his father Anakin, a scene that has much more richness revisiting it later. Han cynically explaining that hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster, though it seems like he’s trying to convince himself of this a bit. C-3PO constantly complaining to R2-D2 and Artoo taking it like a champ. And Leia putting on a brave face as she faces Vader and the destruction of her planet. Even Vader feeling there’s something up when Luke makes his trench run on the Death Star. We don’t much about their history or where they come from to quickly fall in love with all these players as they begin their long journey.

1. 'Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back' (1980)

Simply the best. It might rank highly just because of AT-ATs, the Imperial Walkers that are arguably the coolest things that have ever stomped across a movie screen. Yet there is so much greatness to "Empire" on a surface level but also digging deeper. Vader’s reveal to Luke about being the kid’s father is an all-time truth bomb, and is made better when compared to Luke’s visions of the man behind the mask. Luke training with Yoda and each kinda getting ticked off at the other is priceless.

But really "Empire" is like a Star Destroyer full of these scenes: Han saving Luke in the deadly cold of Hoth by warming him up in Tauntaun guts; Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) betraying his old friend Han in order to save his city; Han and Leia’s "I love you/I know” exchange before the smuggler gets frozen in carbonite. And on and on. You could argue that it’s one of the best sequels of all time but for this series at least, it’s the chapter that takes a cool sci-fi fairy tale with Arthurian overtones and sent it on its way to being a masterwork of storytelling.

- *Nashville *aired for six seasons on ABC from October 2012 to July 2018.

- Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere starred as a country music icon and a rising star at odds with one another.

- The harmonious ensemble also included Charles Esten, Lennon Stella, Maisy Stella, and Chris Carmack.**

The dulcet voices of *Nashville* continue to echo more than a decade out from its ABC premiere in October 2012. That's especially true now, as star Hayden Panettiere is dishing about her time on the series (and in Hollywood) in her memoir, *This Is Me: A Reckoning*.

Created by Oscar winner Callie Khouri, the series tracks the tangled personal and professional lives of fictional country stars navigating fame, rivalries, and the high-stakes world of Music City. At its heart was the tension between legendary performer Rayna Jaymes (Connie Britton) and newcomer Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere). As Panettiere revealed in her book, that tension was present off-camera as well.

"Rayna Jaymes had earned her stripes, and Juliette hadn't. That was the way it was supposed to be," she wrote. "Unfortunately, after the pilot, it was clear that my billing had gone way up. I went from maybe number five in terms of importance to nipping at Connie's heels. I was deeply uncomfortable with this development."

She added, "It was difficult to play that sometimes, that competitiveness, where we were in opposition and against each other. And it's not what we thought it was going to be, so it was very difficult to step in."

Below, we're checking in on the cast of *Nashville* and what they've been up to since dropping their mics in 2018.

Connie Britton led *Nashville *for its first five seasons as Rayna Jaymes, the queen of country music whose fame is on the decline. Britton left *Nashville* on own terms at the end of season 5, but returned briefly for the show's series finale. She received both an Emmy and a Golden Globe nomination for the performance.

Since then, the *Friday Night Lights* favorite has remained a familiar face on screens big and small. You might also recognize her from films such as *Bombshell *(2019), *Promising Young Woman *(2021), and *The Life List *(2025).

On TV, her most notable post-*Nashville* credits include *9-1-1*, *Dirty John*, *The White Lotus,* and *Zero Day*. Most recently, she appeared alongside Steve Carell on HBO's *Rooster*.

In 2011, Britton adopted a child from Ethiopia, Yoby, who is now 15.

Hayden Panettiere starred in all six seasons of *Nashville* as bubblegum country-pop singer Juliette Barnes, a role that earned her two Golden Globe nominations.

After the series wrapped in 2018, Panettiere took a four-year break from acting. She returned to the screen in *Scream VI *(2023), reprising her *Scream 4* hero Kirby Reed, and has since appeared in the films *Amber Alert *(2024), *A Breed Apart *(2025), and *Sleepwalker* (2026), the latter which she also executive produced.

In May 2026, Panettiere released *This Is Me: A Reckoning*, in which she discusses her complex dynamic with Britton on *Nashville*, a 2014 childbirth scare, struggles with addiction, and several uncomfortable encounters she had as a young actress in Hollywood.

She has a daughter, 11-year-old Kaya, with her ex-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko. In her book, she revealed that now identifies as bisexual.

Charles Esten's role as *Nashville *fan favorite Deacon Claybourne kicked off his real-life music career. After dropping several singles that climbed *Billboard*'s Hot Country Songs chart, Esten released his debut album, *Love Ain't Pretty*, on Jan. 26, 2024. Now, he tours globally, with frequent performances at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry.

In 2026, he joined Clare Bowen, Jonathan Jackson, and Sam Palladio for the *Nashville *Encore Tour, bringing the music of the series back to the stage.

Esten has focused more on music than acting in recent years, but you may have seen him on the Netflix teen drama *Outer Banks* or in the thriller *Tell Me Your Secrets*. Next up, he'll appear in the Western film *Flint *alongside Josh Holloway.

Reflecting on his time on the series, Esten told GRAMMY.com in 2024 that "the feeling [of landing *Nashville*] was one of — it'll make me emotional — completion. I felt like the show was an answer to so many unsolved things in my life."

Clare Bowen rose to fame as singer and poet Scarlett O'Connor on *Nashville*, and has since appeared in the Hallmark TV movies *Sand Dollar Cove* (2021) and *#Xmas *(2022), as well as the Australian horror series *Hungry Ghosts* (2020).

Bowen has focused primarily on music in recent years, releasing her self-titled debut album in 2018. In 2024, she dropped a joint album with her husband, Brandon Robert Young. She reunited with Esten, Jonathan Jackson, and Sam Palladio for the *Nashville *Encore Tour in 2026.

Sam Palladio was a core part of *Nashville*, winning fans over with his performance as lovelorn country singer Gunnar Scott for all six seasons.

Since the series wrapped, Palladio has gained wider recognition for his turn as Prince Edward opposite Vanessa Hudgens in Netflix's *The Princess Switch* trilogy (2018–2021). He also landed gigs on ABC's short-lived legal series *Rebel* and the British psychological thriller *The Couple Next Door*.

Palladio recently hit the road with the *Nashville *Encore Tour alongside Esten, Bowen, and Jackson.

Palladio recently credited *Nashville *as a career-defining experience that perfectly blended his passions for acting and music. "*Nashville* was the perfect hybrid," he told *Songwriting* *Magazine* in 2024. "I could not get a better acting/music job."

Former child actor Jonathan Jackson played Avery Barkley, the "bad boy" musician who had a rocky romance with Juliette. By the series finale, the two had reconciled and were raising their two kids together.

Jackson went on to star as the title figure in *Saint Joseph the Hesychast *(2020) and portray Christian musician Eddie DeGarmo in *Unsung Hero *(2024). He also earned a Daytime Emmy Award nomination in 2025 for reprising his role of Lucky Spencer, a character he originated in 1993 on *General Hospital*.

Over the past year, Jackson released both a book of "mystical poetry," *Anthology of Longing*, and a solo album titled *Under the Skies of Babylon: Volume One. *He also hit the road with Bowen, Esten, and Palladio for the *Nashville *Encore Tour.

Michael has grossed over $700 million globally, becoming the second-highest-grossing biopic of all time

Jaafar Jackson stars as Michael Jackson in the film, which focuses on the singer's rise to global fame

Miles Teller is hoping to revisit his character in Michael.

The 39-year-old actor shared a tidbit about the sequel to Michael, the biopic of Michael Jackson that has grossed more than $700 million worldwide since opening April 24 in theaters. Teller, who plays the singer's lawyer, John Branca, told IndieWirethat a sequel is in progress.

The actor is at the Cannes Film Festival to premiere Paper Tiger, co-starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson.

"They had to rework the third act of the last movie," Teller told the outlet. "As far as the sequel goes, I know they're working on it. I haven't had any direct discussions, other than the team is excited to complete that story."

Michael stars Jaafar Jackson, son of the late singer's brother, Jermaine Jackson, in the titular role. The film follows Jackson's early life and performances "that led him to become the biggest entertainer in the world," per the synopsis. Michael ends in 1988, before his numerous controversies, including child sex abuse allegations, came to light years later.

In the film, Teller plays Branca, who was the singer's lawyer and is currently the co-executor of his estate. Branca also served as a producer for Michael.

Since its debut in theaters nearly one month ago, Michael has become the second-highest-grossing music biopic of all time, PEOPLE previously reported. In its first three weeks, the film netted $577 million — including $240.4 million domestically and $336.88 million abroad, after gaining $95 million in its third weekend.

Michael now sits just behind Bohemian Rhapsody, the 2018 biopic of Freddie Mercury, which grossed $910.8 million overall.

Compared to films released around the same time, in its fourth week Michael also out-earned The Devil Wears Prada 2, the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2006 film. It's also only the second film this year to surpass the $700 million mark in global ticket sales, just behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Lydia Plath is reflecting on her wedding to Zac Wyse

The Welcome to Plathville star discusses intimacy in a clip from the show's latest episode, which arrives Tuesday, May 19 on TLC

"Zac had told me leading up to the wedding, he was like, 'When it comes to sex, when it comes to intimacy, I want you to let me know when you're ready,'" she says

Lydia Plath is getting candid about waiting to have sex until marriage.

In PEOPLE's exclusive clip from the Tuesday, May 19 episode of Welcome to Plathville, the 22 year old reflects on how she and her husband, Zac Wyse, decided when to get intimate only after tying the knot in February 2025.

"Zac had told me leading up to the wedding, he was like, 'When it comes to sex, when it comes to intimacy, I want you to let me know when you're ready,'" Lydia recalls while chatting with a friend. "He was like, 'If you want to wait a week, enjoy a week of kissing and making out and warming up to each other before we do anything else.' He's like, 'I'm here to serve you.'"

She adds in the clip, "He just really created a safe place, and no, we didn't wait a week... I don't want to disclose what our wedding night was like, but it was so beautiful, so perfect and so God-centered and so, just, honoring."

In a confessional, she adds, "There's definitely a side of me that no one has ever seen or I never imagined was there, but it's for Zac only and it's awesome."

Lydia and Zac married at her family's farm in Georgia on Feb. 22, 2025, two months after their engagement. At the time, Zac told PEOPLE that "the discipline it has taken to save our first kiss for the wedding day is an example of the commitment we have for each other going into our marriage."

Zac proposed to Lydia in December 2024, less than a month after she publicly revealed their romance on Instagram.

Lydia — who appears on the TLC reality series with her parents, Kim and Barry Plath, and her eight siblings — reflected on her relationship in September. “It's one of those things that it's hard to describe," she told PEOPLE. "It's like, I don't know, you hear the saying, ‘When you know, you know.’ And I didn't know if that was real, and I didn't understand what it meant until I met Zac.”

While the couple’s decision to save their first kiss for their wedding day had turned heads, both maintained that they were happy they made that decision. “That was something,” he said. “That was awesome. It was hard, but it was worth it.”

Kenny Jary — the 84-year-old influencer known online as Patriotic Kenny — died after sharing his stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis

In an interview with PEOPLE, Amanda Kline, who helped him start his social media accounts, remembers the internet icon's final days

“He gave us a lot of reassurance he was OK with passing,” she says. “We all had a peace about it, and I know Kenny did as well”

Those closest to Kenny Jary — the 84-year-old influencer known online as Patriotic Kenny — are remembering him after his death.

On May 18, the content creator's Instagram shared the tragic news that Jary, a Navy veteran with a combined following of over 4 million across Instagram and TikTok, had died. The Minnesota-based internet star had captured hearts and minds by sharing positive messages to his followers and riding his iconic electric scooter. In March, he shared that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.

“The last few weeks and months with Kenny were just precious,” Amanda Kline, Jary's close friend, tells PEOPLE in an interview. “He was surrounded by people who loved him and cared about him, and he was able to pass in peace.”

Kline first met Jary in 2021, introduced through a mutual friend, and quickly they became “like chosen family,” she says. And after a while, Kline realized that his personality would be perfect for social media.

“I noticed everybody in town loved Kenny,” she says. “Every time they'd see Kenny, they just lit up and loved him. I knew we should spread his joy a little beyond the town.”

Kline set up his TikTok account — which he gladly agreed to, even though he had no idea what TikTok was — and made his name “Patriotic Kenny,” a reference to the dozens of American flags in his yard.

Growth was slow at first — around 50 followers after a few weeks. But after Jary's mobility scooter broke down and she launched a fundraising effort to replace it, Jary went viral, and his following soared well past a million.

He also raised far more than his goal for the mobility scooter, and so Jary decided to use the extra funds to start a foundation that could help purchase mobility scooters for other veterans, armed with the mission of ending isolation for veterans and restoring their independence.

Then, a few months ago, he learned he had stage 4 lung cancer.

“It was crushing, and it was horrific,” Kline says. “I was the one who broke the news to him, and his first response was, "I kind of had a feeling."

But his next response, Kline adds, was, “I could say it's not fair that I got cancer. But what I could also say is it's not fair that I've had the kind of life I've had for the last five years and everybody hasn't experienced that kind of life. I wish everybody could have the kind of goodness and life that I've had.”

“That's so Kenny,” says Kline. “He took the most horrific news and turned it into something positive.”

— sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Throughout his final weeks, Kline was by his side — tucking him into bed at night and waking him up in the morning. And she helped him fulfill his wish to stay at home, surrounded by friends and family, until the end.

When he died, Kline says, he was listening to Randy Travis — whose music he called his gospel.

“He gave us a lot of reassurance he was OK with passing,” she continued. “We all had a peace about it, and I know Kenny did as well.”

And Kline says, in her last conversation with Jary, she promised him that she would do everything in her power to keep his foundation going after he died.

“That has been his legacy and will continue to be his legacy as long as I'm around,” she says. “That's for sure.”

Bravo released the first trailer for the upcoming three-part reunion of Summer House season 10.

Stars Ciara Miller, Kyle Cooke, Amanda Batula, and West Wilson are the focus of the clip as the cast confronts the latter two over their controversial romance revealed back in March.

"He wants to get his last little word, and I hope it works because he’s with you to spite me," Miller declares in the clip.

It's time, Summer House fans. The season 10 reunion is almost here!

Bravo has finally released a first look at the upcoming and highly anticipated sit-down with the cast of the reality stars, amid rising online tension due to the March reveal of a romance between stars Amanda Batula and West Wilson. After several leaks circulated online, and fans speculated about how things will fall out among the castmates following the controversial romance confirmation, the network is giving fans an official look at what went down between the whole cast during the taping that Andy Cohen previously called "one of the most intense we've ever shot."

As anyone keeping track is aware of, the reunion's taping came on the heels of Batula and Wilson confirming their rumored romance weeks after gossip blog Deuxmoi first reported they were hooking up. The rumor created ripples throughout the Summer House fandom and cast, since Batula was best friends with Wilson's ex, Ciara Miller, and Wilson was close with Kyle Cooke, to whom Batula had been married for four years before they announced their split in January.

The revelation came as season 10 was still airing — which the cast filmed last summer —and every episode led to more criticism and outrage as each installment highlighted the messy dynamics at play between Miller, Wilson, Batula, and Cooke.

Said messiness is also evident in the trailer, which features the heated back-and-forth between various cast members and the newly public couple, who are noticeably on the defensive as their controversial relationship is put through the wringer.

Batula and Wilson have been on the defensive since they confirmed their relationship, with everyone from their fellow Summer House castmates to other Bravo stars and celebrities outside the reality TV sphere having a lot to say about the relationship reveal and picking sides.

Critics have been especially contentious about the relationship because both Wilson and Batula denied the rumors about their relationship days before confirming them on social media. Wilson brushed aside the rumors during an appearance on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live, stating that he and Batula were just friends and adding, "If it's not clear, that's a very important person to me, and I, like, care about her a lot."

The denials rubbed fans the wrong way as the season 10 featured multiple cast members wondering if Miller and Wilson were getting back together, with the latter being notably disturbed when approached by costar Jesse Solomon about possibly kissing Miller if given the chance. At one point in the season, Wilson even referred to Miller as "the love of my life."

Although their brief dalliance following Wilson's addition to the cast in 2023 ended on less-than-friendly terms, the pair have maintained a will-they-or-won't-they vibe ever since. They even seemed to briefly rekindle their romance in the final episodes of the season, which makes the murky details of when Wilson and Batula began their relationship even more significant.

When Cooke broke his silence on the news in a TikTok interview posted April 1, he confessed that he didn't "understand the timeline just yet" of the relationship between Batula and Wilson, which made watching the current season a "mental mindf---."

"I mean, it's just like a series of events that, unfortunately, the evidence just kind of started piling up, piling up, piling up. I'll leave it at that," Cooke said. "Looking back, there's a lot of us [who've] been looking at his body language and, you know, how touchy and handsy he is with her and just kind of gave him a little bit of a hall pass like 'Oh, it's West.'"

Miller broke her silence in a Glamour cover story published later that month, telling the outlet it was a "major mindf---" experiencing the reveal in real time as Summer House's current season 10 was still airing.

When reminded of how she stuck up for Batula throughout the season, Miller lamented: "I've fought with your own husband to advocate for you. I have championed you. I have tried to be there in different ways for you and help you and get you to see your value in yourself."

"And so to be disregarded in such a disrespectful way is.... Honestly, it's.... I'm at a loss for words sometimes," she admitted.
