Manchester United co-owner says UK has been 'colonized by immigrants'

British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe said on Thursday he was sorry he had offended some people by saying the country had been "colonized by immigrants", after Prime Minister Keir Starmer joined a chorus of criticism over the remarks.

Ratcliffe, one of Britain's most successful businessmen, responded to the outcry with a statement saying it was important to raise the issue of immigration, but that he regretted his "choice of language" had caused concern.

The founder of chemicals giant INEOS, and owner of nearly a third of Manchester United, had told Sky News that high migration and people living on benefits were damaging the economy.

"You can't have an economy with nine million people on benefits and huge levels of immigrants coming in. I mean, the UK has been colonized - it's costing too much money," Ratcliffe said in the interview aired on Wednesday.

"The UK has been colonized by immigrants, really, hasn't it?" he added.

Starmer said the remarks were wrong and would play into the hands of those who wanted to divide the country. Finance minister Rachel Reeves said the comments were "unacceptable" and "disgusting".

On Thursday, INEOS issued a statement from Ratcliffe in response to "reporting of his comments".

"I am sorry that my choice of language has offended some people in the UK and Europe and caused concern but it is important to raise the issue of controlled and well-managed immigration that supports economic growth," he said.

He said he wanted to stress that governments must manage migration alongside investment in skills, industry and jobs to ensure long-term prosperity is shared by everyone, and that it was "critical that we maintain an open debate on the challenges facing the UK".

Starmer's spokesperson said it was right for him to apologize. Asked if an apology about offence caused rather than the comments themselves were enough, the spokesperson said questions on the detail of the apology were for Ratcliffe.

Manchester United fans furious

His comments were condemned by politicians, campaigners and by fan groups at Manchester United, including its Muslim Supporters Club who said the term "colonized" was frequently used by far-right activists to frame migrants as invaders.

"Public discourse shapes public behaviour," the group said. "When influential figures adopt language that mirrors extremist talking points, it risks legitimizing prejudice and deepening division."

Others noted that the Manchester United first team was largely made up of international players and staff, and questioned whether Ratcliffe should be commenting on British politics when he had moved to the tax haven Monaco.

Manchester United said it prided itself on being an inclusive and welcoming club.

"Our diverse group of players, staff and global community of supporters, reflect the history and heritage of Manchester; a city that anyone can call home," the club said in a statement.

Before Ratcliffe's response, The Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham said Ratcliffe's comments were inflammatory and should be withdrawn.

Kansas State head coach Jerome Tang said he was "pissed" after his team's latest loss

The Wildcats lost 91-62 to the Cincinnati Bearcats on Wednesday night, making it their third consecutive loss at home of more than 24 points

Fans wore paper bags over their heads with messages for Tang to be fired

Jerome Tang had harsh words for his team after Kansas State's latest loss on the same night fans in the student section wore paper bags with messages pleading for him to be fired.

The Wildcats basketball coach called out his players' effort — or lack thereof — after their Wednesday, Feb. 11, 91-62 drubbing at home against the Cincinnati Bearcats.

"This was embarrassing," Tang said in his postgame presser. "These dudes do not deserve to wear this uniform, and there will be very few of them in it next year. I'm embarrassed for the university, I'm embarrassed for our fans, and our student section."

He added, "It's just ridiculous," later saying the players "don't deserve to be here."

The loss to the Bearcats dropped the Big 12 team to 1-10 in conference play and 10-14 on the season and was the team's fifth-straight loss overall and third-straight loss of more than 24 points at home.

In the game, the Wildcats allowed Cincinnati a near-record 16 3-pointers and suffered defensive lapses including at least one head-scratching-for-K-State-fans play in which they allowed the Bearcats to rebound a missed free throw and throw down a dunk.

In the stands at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan, Kan., fans booed. More than a dozen students donned paper bags asking for the school to buyout the coach's $18.6 million contract, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal.

The 59-year-old Tang is in his third season at the university after serving as an assistant for nearly 20 seasons under Baylor head coach Scott Drew. In 2023, he signed a seven-year deal through 2030.

In his first season at the school in 2023, the team went deep in the NCAA tournament, coming up short of the Final Four after losing in the Elite Eight. Last year was less successful with K-State missing March Madness and suffering a second-round loss in the NIT.

Things don't get any easier for the Wildcats this weekend: They play at No. 3 Houston on Saturday, Feb. 14.

For Tang, the team has no choice but to pick up the pieces as he seemingly fights for his job.

"We have practice at 6 a.m. tomorrow. I have no answers or no words. Y'all got two questions, so whoever wants to ask two questions, I'll answer 'em to the best of my ability right now," he told reporters. "But right now, I'm pissed."

An Australian woman went all out to get the attention of a "cute guy" on a plane — and her efforts have since gone viral.

Isabella Duric, 23, had been traveling on a Virgin Australia flight from Sydney to Melbourne when she saw the man in question — whose name has since been revealed as Lachie — and decided to throw him a note, per news.com.au.

Duric documented the whole thing in a recent TikTok video, writing over the clip, "Saw a cute guy on the plane and thought I'd shoot my shot," adding, "So we decided to throw a letter to where he was sitting."

The note included Duric's name, identifying herself as the "Blonde" in brackets, as well as her number and Instagram handle.

Her friend then did the honors, throwing the note across the aisle, but failed to get the man's attention. Duric wrote, "The second hand embarrassment..."

She added, "When he didn't read the letter, we made this to show him," showing a sign on a phone that read "Open the note" in capital yellow letters.

Teasing her followers, Duric ended the clip — which has now been watched over 1.4 million times — by showing a text she'd received from Lachie, which read, "Hey Isabella, I'm Lachie the dude you threw a note at haha how are you. Didn't have internet on the plane to add you unfortunately."

Duric captioned the post, "Sorry if this was you or anyone else around us 🤣🤣."

Virgin Australia were among the multiple accounts commenting on the whole thing, responding to the video, "We're on the edge of our seats 👀."

Duric responded, "Big fan 🙌"

The content creator has since revealed that the note-throwing was a dare, but did say she was genuinely interested in the man, per news.com.au.

She told the outlet, "My friend said, 'I found your airport crush' and he pointed to the guy behind us," adding, "I told the girls about it in a Snapchat and said 'imagine I send a note to the guy' and they dared me to do it."

The friends then wrote a sign on a phone that told the 'cute guy' to 'open the note'

In the clip, Lachie was been wearing a baseball cap and white T-shirt and was seen sitting next to the window on the plane. "It bounced off the window and landed near his seat. But he thought it was for someone else and didn't read it," Duric told news.com.au of the moment she decided to shoot her shot.

They managed to eventually get his attention, with Duric telling the outlet that she apologized for "being annoying" after Lachie text her, to which he responded, "Nah, you're fine."

The pair then texted for a few days about things like work and university, according to the outlet, however, things eventually fizzled out and she's now seeing somebody else.

"Everything is meant to happen for a reason and it was also a bit of a running joke (about my airport crushes) – and I am seeing someone else now," Duric told the outlet.

Virgin Australia's chief marketing and customer operations officer, Libby Minogue, said that passengers often find love on Virgin flights, telling news.com.au, "Whether it's a conversation sparked at the gate or a connection with the person in the next seat."

"There's something about flying that makes people more open to the unexpected. From mid-air proposals and weddings, we've played cupid more than once. It turns out love really is in the air," Minogue added.

Duric did not immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE for further comment. PEOPLE has also reached out to Virgin Australia.

NBC's ratings rose 23% after the kidnapping reporting of Savannah Guthrie's mother, Nancy.

Viewership for "Today" has soared as audiences tune in for updates on anchor Savannah Guthrie's 84-year-old missing mother, Nancy, who was abducted from her Arizona home nearly two weeks ago.

The NBC program's audience jumped 23% last week, adding 624,000 viewers from the same period last year while the heartbroken TV host has been away from the morning juggernaut since her mom disappeared from her Tucson home on Jan. 31, Variety reported, citing Nielsen data.

Between Feb. 2 and 6, the morning show averaged nearly 3.32 million viewers, surpassing ABC's "Good Morning America" at about 2.91 million and 1.84 million for CBS' "CBS Mornings," the data shows.

"Today" dominated the morning airwaves, grabbing 41% of viewers and leading its rivals both overall and in the crucial 25-to-54 demo.

Nancy hasn't been seen since Jan. 31 around 9:45 p.m., when her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, dropped her off at her Tucson home after a dinner with his wife, Savannah's sister, Annie.

TMZ reported that the $67,000 payment would be in exchange for the "name of the individual involved."

The letter — the third alleged note sent out since Nancy was last seen — contained details of a working bitcoin address, TMZ host Harvey Levin said during Wednesday's appearance on Fox News' "America Newsroom."

The self-proclaimed kidnappers have demanded millions of dollars in cryptocurrency, setting a final deadline for Monday, Feb. 9 — but have failed to provide proof of life or additional information.

Changes are in the air in Dark Winds season 4.

PEOPLE has an exclusive look at the Navajo detective thriller's premiere, where Zahn McClarnon's Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn reveals some shocking news to Sergeant Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten).

"What is it?" a suspicious Bernadette asks, before Leaphorn replies, "I'm retiring. Bern."

While she doubts his claims, noting, "it's not the first time I've heard that," he assures her that "it's real this time."

"Paperwork's in. Captain Largo's aware," Leaphorn says of their boss. "Come fall, I'm gone."

"To where, Los Angeles?" Bernadette speculates, knowing that is where his wife, Emma (Deanna Allison), went in season 3 after Leaphorn confessed to his role in B.J. Vines' death and the lies he told in an attempt to cover it up.

Taking his silence as confirmation, Bernadette continues: "You know, Emma left for a reason, Joe. I'm not sure you trying to move out there is going to make her change her mind."

"She left because she didn't want to be with the guy I was anymore, Bern," Leaphorn agrees. "I don't either. It's time for a change. New blood, new ways of doing things, new leadership."

When Bernadette realizes that Leaphorn is insinuating that she take over his position as Lieutenant, she exclaims, "What? No."

"Just think about it," he says, but she pushes back: "I don't have to think about it."

She notes that Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) has been part of the force longer than she has, but Leaphorn only wants Bernadette to do the job.

"I am not saying he is incapable. He's a good cop, well-trained. He's serious," Leaphorn acknowledges. "But I've come to realize you cannot separate spirituality from upholding the law here. You understand the land, the people who live on it. He's still working on that part, Bern.

"I don't know, Joe. Really?" she wonders.

"Yeah," he reassures. "You're the right choice. If you don't know why, now you will."
