An online source dedicated to heavy metal journalism, the outlet published "Van Halen / 20 Greatest Songs - Ranked!," and you might be surprised by the results.
At No. 20, they have "Outta Space (A Different Kind of Truth)," and then they strum through "Light Up the Sky" at No. 18, "The Dream Is Over" at No. 11, and "Running With the Devil" at No. 4.
"Jump," the riff masters' only track to ever reach No. 1 on the Billboard chart, didn't even make the cut. It was mentioned, though – alongside No. 16 "House of Pain" and No. 9 "I'll Wait," both of which the source says are "far superior to 'Jump,'" with the latter elevated by a "brilliant" guitar solo.
Best Van Halen Song of All Time
At the top, they have "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love." Released in 1978, the track, per the outlet, defines Van Halen and "still sounds fresh today."

The track features lyrics by the band's debut lead singer, David Lee Roth, and music written by their guitarist, keyboardist, and backing vocalist, Eddie Van Halen. It's Track 4 off their self-titled debut album. And interestingly, Eddie wasn't a fan of it in its early days because of the limited chords it required to play it.
According to the American Songwriter, that was by design, as the idea behind the song was to poke fun at the punk rock movement of the time.
"Eddie Van Halen wrote the music for 'Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love' as a way of slyly parodying the ethos of the punk rockers who were so prevalent in the late '70s," AS shares. "That's why the song is relatively simple in terms of having just a few chords. In fact, Eddie felt slightly embarrassed about the song when he showed it to his bandmates."
Good thing he did, though, because the song is a banger still today.
"If you were to be asked which song defines Van Halen, this would be it," MetalTalk writes. "A riff that still sounds fresh today, a bassline every budding bassist wants to learn, drums that drive like a freight train, and vocals that tell a story."
They add, "As for the solo, it's not an overblown shred-fest, but a considered, well-structured accompaniment. This song has everything. Pure perfection."
Widely considered one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Van Halen have received praise both critically, with Classical Rock, Louder, Forbes, and Rolling Stone all singing the rock gods' praises, and commercially, with fans buying up more than 80 million albums worldwide. And we are talkin' bout love. Lots of love.
