Seven months after expressing interest in starring in *Minecraft 2*, the Oscar-nominated actress has been officially cast in the sequel to the smash-hit video game adaptation, ** has confirmed.

Perhaps best known for her iconic run as Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi's *Spider-Man* trilogy, Dunst has spent most of her career outside the blockbuster space, starring in independent films and prestige projects from filmmakers like Sofia Coppola and Jane Campion.

But Dunst has been open with her desire to enter the *Minecraft* universe, due to her children's passion for 2025's *A Minecraft Movie*, which followed a quartet of Idaho misfits as they're pulled through a portal, ending up in a cubic world, where they embark on a quest to return home.

Admittedly, Dunst's motivations to join the sequel were also financial. "Maybe I can just make a movie where I don't lose money?" she quipped.

Well, she went to the right place then. *Minecraft* grossed almost $1 billion at the global box office, and became such a phenomenon that that screenings were increasingly raucous — too raucous for some.

Set for release July 23, 2027, *Minecraft 2* will once again be directed by Jared Hess, and the returning cast includes Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge.

Deadline Hollywood first reported Dunst's casting.
