As even some of the biggest science fiction fans know, the genre can be hit or miss when it comes to effectiveness. From techno-thrillers to dystopian futures to intergalactic adventures, sci-fi is bursting at the seams with cool concepts, but the execution isn't always all there.

Thankfully, Amazon Prime Video offers a vast selection of compelling sci-fi movies that expand our minds and transport us to fascinating worlds unlike our own. Notable films on the streamer include cult classics like *Donnie Darko* (2001) and franchise entries such as *A Quiet Place: Day One* (2024), each of which you can stream free with a subscription.

Ahead, peruse our list of the 10 best sci-fi movies streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)

Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Michelle and John Goodman as Howard in '10 Cloverfield Lane'

Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Michelle and John Goodman as Howard in '10 Cloverfield Lane'. Michele K. Short/Paramount Pictures

This spiritual sequel to 2008's *Cloverfield* takes an entirely different approach, forgoing found-footage cinematography and grand-scale set pieces in favor of an intimate setting and mesmerizing, character-driven storytelling. After being hit by another car while driving, a woman named Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) wakes up in a bunker also inhabited by a pair of men, Howard (John Goodman) and Emmett (John Gallagher Jr.). Howard tells Michelle he brought her there to save her life after a dangerous air contamination — but she soon discovers that things aren't quite as they seem.

Boasting grade-A performances by Winstead and Goodman, *10 Cloverfield Lane* is "lean, and taut, and tense, and moves with Swiss-clock precision," writes EW's critic. —*Kevin Jacobsen*

Coherence (2013)

Emily Foxler as Emily in 'Coherence'

When old friends reunite for a dinner party in a movie, you know something is about to go terribly awry. In *Coherence*, that "something" is the arrival of a close-passing comet — and the discovery of a house full of doppelgängers having an identical dinner party down the street. The plot is full of quantum-related twists and turns, but the film is grounded by the talented cast, which includes the late Nicholas Brendon (*Buffy the Vampire Slayer*) in a fun self-referential role as a former TV star.

The production is just as quirky as the premise: Director James Ward Byrkit wanted to make a low-budget film that was so stripped down, it didn't even have a script. Instead, he invited a bunch of actor friends to his living room, gave them basic character motivations, and let them improvise through the entire thing. The result, while occasionally messy, is thoroughly original. *—Janey Tracey*

Communion (1989)

Christopher Walken as Whitley Strieber in 'Communion'

Christopher Walken as Whitley Strieber in 'Communion'.

Critics didn't quite know what to make of this psychological sci-fi drama when it was released in 1989. Subverting tropes of the alien abduction subgenre, the film doesn't offer easy answers as it tells its story of a novelist (Christopher Walken) who has disturbing visions of extraterrestrial beings in a remote cabin. Decades later, some of the biggest criticisms of *Communion* are arguably among its most charming virtues, from Walken's idiosyncratic performance as a man on the verge of a nervous breakdown to the cheesy special effects. —*K.J.*

**Director:** Philippe Mora

**Cast:** Christopher Walken, Lindsay Crouse, Frances Sternhagen, Terry Hanauer, Andreas Katsulas

Donnie Darko (2001)

"I find it kind of funny/I find it kind of sad/The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had." So go the lyrics to "Mad World," a song expertly deployed in this wildly original sci-fi thriller about a moody teenager named Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal), who is troubled by visions of a figure in a monstrous rabbit costume. The entity warns a sleepwalking Donnie that the world will end in approximately 28 days and subsequently persuades him to carry out an escalating series of crimes in his community.

Writer-director Richard Kelly taps into the suburban alienation tackled frequently in film at the turn of the 21st century and goes deeper and more disturbing, with a fun sci-fi bent that's helped establish its cult classic status. —*K.J.*

This low-budget sci-fi horror film may be underseen compared to more mainstream films in its subgenre, but its thrills can compete with some of the best of them. Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who also directed and produced the film, star as brothers who escaped a UFO death cult in their childhood but grew up to lead lives of disappointment. Upon receiving a cassette tape from the group, the brothers agree to return to the camp for one day, where they discover a series of unexplained phenomena. EW's critic praises *The Endless* as "a thoughtful investigation into how our past and our families shape who we are — with plenty of scares and mind-bending twists." —*K.J.*

In this sci-fi classic, an extraterrestrial race is populating Earth with pods that systematically replace humans with alien duplicates. The film follows a quartet of friends who try to uncover the truth and alert the authorities before it's too late, eventually waging war against pod people. Featuring one of the most chilling endings of all time, *Invasion of the Body Snatchers* remains a tense thrill ride and a powerful commentary on paranoia. This was the second of multiple adaptations of Jack Finney's 1955 novel, *The Body Snatchers*, and, as EW's critic writes of the 1978 film, it "trades Cold War anxiety for post-Vietnam paranoia in ways that strengthen and sharpen the source material." —*K.J.***** Where to watch *Invasion of the Body Snatchers*: Amazon Prime Video

Joseph Quinn as Eric and Lupita Nyong'o as Sam in 'A Quiet Place: Day One'

Joseph Quinn as Eric and Lupita Nyong'o as Sam in 'A Quiet Place: Day One'.

Gareth Gatrell/Paramount Pictures

The first two *Quiet Place* films explored how a family adapts to a world where no one can make a sound for fear of being attacked by hypersensitive extraterrestrial predators. This sideways prequel takes it back to the beginning, where these alien creatures terrorize a New York City ill-prepared to fight back. It's the first day of the apocalypse, and the action centers on a cancer patient (Lupita Nyong'o) and a law student (Joseph Quinn) who team up for their own survival. EW's critic writes that *A Quiet Place: Day One* "ends up being quite touching in between scenes when it’s making you jump," thanks to Nyong'o and Quinn's heartfelt performances. —*K.J.*

Timecop (1994)

Jean-Claude Van Damme as Agent Max Walker in 'Timecop'

Jean-Claude Van Damme's biggest box office success blends the actor's prolific martial arts experience with a knotty time-travel story. The action star plays Max Walker, an agent at the newly formed Time Enforcement Commission, where he is tasked with stopping criminals from altering the past. After uncovering a vast conspiracy by a corrupt senator, he discovers he might have the chance to rewrite history by going back in time to prevent his wife's tragic death. With high-concept emotional stakes and sleek visual effects, *Timecop *is an entertaining slice of '90s cheese. Plus, writes EW's critic, "Van Damme pulls off some novel stunts — his midair split will have you hitting the slow-motion button." —*K.J.*

Where to watch *Timecop*: Amazon Prime Video

**Director:** Peter Hyams

**Cast:** Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ron Silver, Mia Sara

The Vast of Night (2020)

This underrated sci-fi indie centers on a pair of teenage friends living in 1950s New Mexico who investigate a cryptic audio signal that suddenly interrupts a radio program. Putting the pieces together, they unravel a conspiracy that may suggest proof of alien life. With a budget of just $700,000, director Andrew Patterson pulls off a number of stunning shots, transporting us to a specific time and place. As EW wrote following the film's success, "Just the setting and veneer of the film — it's framed as an episode of a *Twilight Zone*-esque anthology TV series* *— should be enough for you to guess more or less where it's headed." —*K.J.*

WarGames (1983)

Ally Sheedy as Jennifer Mack and Matthew Broderick as David Lightman in 'WarGames'

Ally Sheedy as Jennifer Mack and Matthew Broderick as David Lightman in 'WarGames'.

An ‘80s movie about teenage Matthew Broderick accidentally hacking into a military supercomputer during the Cold War? It sounds hopelessly hokey, but it’s surprisingly well-written, entertaining, and even prescient, considering the word "hacking" wasn’t yet in the lexicon. *WarGames* has been credited with inspiring a generation of hackers and computer scientists, including Google cofounder Sergey Brin, and Ronald Reagan reportedly consulted with Congress and his Joint Chiefs of Staff about whether the plot of the movie was plausible.

Even the film’s creators didn’t expect *WarGames* to have that kind of impact: On the DVD commentary, director John Badham and the screenwriters said they were worried audiences wouldn’t find the premise believable, until a story about teen hackers breaking into the Department of Defense made headlines shortly after the movie opened. —*J.T.*

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court sided with the Trump administration Thursday in upholding the power of federal regulators to enforce data privacy laws on telecommunications companies.

The 8-1 decision preserved one of the Federal Communications Commission's key tools, though the companies also won a concession from the Republican administration that could shift the regulatory landscape.

The appeal from telecommunications giants Verizon and AT&T challenged a combined $100 million in penalties imposed after the agency determined that the companies had failed to safeguard customer location data.

The companies argued that the FCC's process was unconstitutional because it gave them little opportunity to tell their side of the story in front of a jury.

The administration defended the fines as an essential regulatory tool. But the government also said companies did not have to pay the penalties right away, a regulatory shift in the companies' favor.

The Supreme Court agreed, affirming the FCC's power to order fines when challenges are still available.

"The orders at issue did not settle the carriers' legal obligations because, stated simply, they did not create an obligation to pay," Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the majority.

Justice Clarence Thomas, the lone dissenter, said he would have given the two telecom companies a clearer path to recouping the fines they already paid.

Other agencies use similar enforcement methods, so a sweeping victory for AT&T and Verizon could have had widespread effects, advocates said.

The environmental group Earthjustice applauded the ruling, saying it has direct implications for other agencies and a key energy-efficiency case.

"By rejecting this unsupported attack on agency authority, the Court's decision safeguards the government's ability to enforce laws that protect people, communities, and the environment," said Caroline Flynn, the group's Supreme Court counsel.

The libertarian-leaning New Civil Liberties Alliance was disappointed by the decision, but expected it to help other companies in the future. "In fact, it may even buttress their willingness to challenge future agency orders in federal court before paying any penalties," said the alliance's president, Mark Chenoweth.

A few more carriers may decide to litigate, but the decision leaves the FCC with the power to "publicly announce large fines with much fanfare," said Doug Orvis, a veteran telecom attorney. "It will be interesting to see what happens going forward."

The Supreme Court's conservative majority has sided against federal agencies and limited their power before. That includes overturning a decades-old decision that had given regulators an advantage in court and stripping another agency of a major tool in fighting securities fraud.

- *Deadliest Catch* star Sig Hansen is addressing the retirement speculation.

- The captain of the Bering sea crabbing vessel made it clear that he doesn't plan on stepping away anytime soon.

- "Time is limited, so I want to keep doing it while I can," who has suffered several health scares over the past few years.

The captain of the F/V Northwestern isn't ready to say goodbye to his seafaring days.

Longtime *Deadliest Catch* star Sig Hansen recently told PEOPLE that he is well aware of all the chatter surrounding his age and health. But as far as he's concerned, retirement is still a few years away.

"I keep hearing those rumors myself. The more I hear that, the more I kind of want to rebel and not do that," Hansen replied when asked if he has plans to step away in the Thursday interview. "I don’t see retiring anytime soon."

He continued, "Obviously, I want to see my daughter [Captain Mandy Hansen] move in and partake more, but she had her children, our grandchildren, so that didn’t happen right away. My son-in-law Clark [Pederson] has been stepping up more and more, and he’s perfectly capable. But for me, that’s still kind of an ego thing and I don’t want to retire just yet."

Hansen, who turned 60 in April, sparked concern among fans after season 21 of the Discovery series ended with a frightening medical emergency. The episode filmed in 2025 saw Hansen collapse on his Bering Sea crab fishing vessel; he was then rushed to the hospital, where doctors encouraged the ship captain to reconsider retirement. Prior to that, Hansen suffered a heart attack in 2016.

Despite the health concerns, Hansen said he can't quite imagine stepping away from the sea.

"I know time is limited, so I want to keep doing it while I can," he told the outlet. "I think there’s a little ego involved. And I don’t want anybody knocking me off my throne just yet. I know there’s a line of people waiting, but I’m not ready for that.”

Hansen added that even when the time does come for him to hand the reins over to someone else, he can't imagine being wholly disconnected from the job.

"I don’t think I could ever fully retire. Even if someone else was running the boat, your mind is still active," he said. "You’re thinking about the weather, where they’re at. You can never turn it off. I don’t think I’d respect myself if I could just walk away from it completely.”

Hansen has previously gone back and forth on the subject of his eventual retirement, often hinting that it is quite a while away, while on other occasions, admitting to giving it some serious thought. Just last year, Hansen told PEOPLE that fear of death had been weighing on his choice.

"I think I've got a few more years left in me. I think about it all the time, and when I do think about ‘retiring,’ it's only because I've lost so many people, and I'm more fearful every time we go out on the water," he admitted. "Part of it is just, you think about your own mortality, and I'm fearful."

He added, "I don't have the same mentality I did as before, where you look at everything as a challenge. And it's still challenging, but it's not the same."

The current season of *Deadliest Catch* is grappling with a particularly heartbreaking story: the death of crew member Todd Meadows, the 25-year-old deckhand who fell overboard the fishing vessel Aleutian Lady on Feb. 25. He was recovered by his fellow crew members, who attempted to resuscitate him, but he remained unresponsive. He died of "probably hypothermia" after being submerged in the freezing waters.

The premiere episode of season 22 paid tribute to Meadows, who has also remained present throughout the season via footage captured prior to the accident.

*Deadliest Catch* airs on Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on the Discovery Channel.

WASHINGTON, June 3 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump is planning to use Cold War-era national ‌defense powers to send nearly $700 million to support coal facilities, ‌according to a White House official.

Trump could announce as soon as Thursday that he will invoke the Defense Production Act, the 1950 law granting presidents wide authority over national security-related industries, to upgrade more than a dozen coal power plants, build a massive West Coast coal export terminal ‌and match corporate funds to build new power plants, the official said.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity to not preempt the president's announcement, and cautioned that the details could still change.

The Trump administration has framed energy issues in existential terms as it eyes the domestic need to sustain power-hungry artificial-intelligence data centers and aims to marginalize ‌foreign adversaries that hold large fossil fuel reserves. Coal, though, has faced steady declines in U.S. usage. It once accounted for more than half of U.S. electricity generation, but fell to less than one-fifth in recent years, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Power ‌producers have largely switched to cheaper natural gas and renewable sources, wary of fossil fuel's effect on the planet's warming climate and increasing reliance on brittle ‌global supply chains.

Of the $700 million, more than half will fund 13 coal plant upgrades, $185 million will match corporate funds for coal facilities in Alaska, Maryland and West Virginia, and $75 million will support ‌the long-proposed West Gateway export terminal in Northern California.

Bloomberg first reported the planned coal support.

SEOUL, June 4 (Reuters) - South Korea and China have agreed to expand weekly flight rights between the countries for the ‌first time in seven years, Seoul's transport ministry said on ‌Thursday, in another sign of warming ties between the Asian neighbours.

The agreement, reached at bilateral aviation talks held in Seoul on May 27 to 28, will increase passenger flight rights by 56 weekly flights to 664 from 608, and cargo rights by 14 weekly flights to 68 from 54, the Ministry ‌of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said.

The ministry said the deal would make it easier to add flights on high-demand routes such as Incheon to Shanghai and Incheon to Guangzhou, where existing rights had been fully used by both sides.

It will also expand routes from South Korea's regional airports, including Busan and Cheongju, to 10 Chinese cities such as Guangzhou, Chengdu, ‌Shenzhen, Chongqing and Xian, the ministry said.

First-quarter passenger traffic between South Korea and China reached about 4.39 million, exceeding the pre-pandemic level of 4.14 million, according to the statement.

Lee So-young, the ministry's aviation policy chief, said it was encouraging that the two countries had achieved a ‌timely expansion of flight rights through active aviation talks at a time when exchanges between them were increasing.

"We expect this agreement to help promote visits to South Korea ‌by Chinese tourists, improve convenience for our citizens travelling to China and for import-export companies, and contribute to revitalising the economy by further boosting Korean airlines' entry into the Chinese market," Lee said.

The ministry ‌said it plans to allocate the newly secured rights to South Korean airlines in the second half of the year.

NBC has announced its fall 2026 primetime schedule

The list of returning shows includes St. Denis Medical, The Voice and Law & Order: SVU

The Traitors will be making the leap from Peacock to NBC for a special civilian season

Summer hasn't even officially begun, but NBC is already looking forward to fall.

The TV network has revealed its fall 2026 primetime schedule, which features returning favorites like Law & Order: SVU and The Voice. The popular Peacock reality series The Traitors is also making a jump to broadcast for a civilian season.

“The Traitors format has proven itself as one of the most gripping and talked-about reality competition shows in the world,” Stephen Lambert, CEO of Studio Lambert, the producers behind the Peacock and NBC editions, said in a statement, per NBC. “We're thrilled to be working with NBC to open up the experience to a new group of civilian players, whose stories and strategies will make the gameplay even more unpredictable — and, we hope, even more addictive for viewers.”

The NBC fall 2026 lineup will have returning favorites, but not every series was renewed. Brilliant Minds and Stumble are among the shows that won't be back for a new season.

Here's everything to know about the NBC fall 2026 schedule.

St. Denis Medical
