Below Deck fans have made no secret of the fact that they'd love to get Kate Chastain back on the show. She was an awesome Chief Stew, and viewers would love to see her back on their screens. After all, her friend Chef Ben Robinson made a comeback. But is this something Kate would do? Absolutely not. Unfortunately, she wouldn't want to return as Chief Stew.

Kate Chastain wants to be a charter guest rather than a member of staff

Despite being one of the wittiest Chief Stews in the franchise, Kate has had her share of responsibility. On Watch What Happens Live with host Andy Cohen, the House of Villains alum said that she wouldn't say no to returning as a guest, though, or in some capacity with less responsibility.

"Absolutely not would I ever (come back)," Kate replied when a guest asked if she'd ever come back to Below Deck. "I mean, I would like to go back as a charter guest. I think that would be super fun. Who do I need to call (to make that happen)?"

She magnanimously added that she also wouldn't be opposed to returning in a role with less responsibility. "I might go back just to be like the third stewardess," she admitted. "I wanna be down doing laundry. I want no responsibility for one week. Maybe."

That's fair. She's had her fill of being in charge. Andy said that it would actually be interesting to have Katie, Aesha Scott, Daisy Kelilher, and Fraser Olender be Chief Stews as guests charter. That would be fun to watch!

Kate agreed too. "I know! Because we know the shortcuts they would take," she explained. "We could catch them and be like uhm…"

When the stock market falls off a cliff, the natural impulse might be to panic and sell. There's nothing so stomach-churning as watching your 401(k) sink into the red, with no bottom in sight.

And that's how many investors probably felt on the morning of March 3, as stock indexes plummeted in response to escalating conflict in Iran.

But panic-selling violates two or three cardinal rules of investing: Buy stocks when prices are low, sell when they're high. Don't make impulsive moves. Stick to the plan.

Here are a few rules to remember when markets are reeling:

A falling stock market is a good moment to take stock of the basic rules of investing. One of them says, in effect, "don't panic."Don't try to time the market

It might sound tempting to cash out of the stock market when the indexes are falling, sit out the downturn, and reinvest when markets hit bottom.

The big problem with that strategy, experts say, is picking the right moment to cash out and cash in.

"Any time you're trying to avoid a downturn, the risk of being wrong is pretty high," said Peter Lazaroff, a certified financial planner in St. Louis, speaking to USA TODAY in 2025. "And you have to be correct twice."

As Lazaroff explains, you have to make two decisions: When to sell high, and when to buy low. Those calls are harder than they sound.

"So often, some of the absolute worst days in the market are in close proximity to some of the absolute best days in the market," said Kristy Akullian, head of iShares investment strategy, Americas, at BlackRock, speaking to USA TODAY in 2025.

Case in point: April 9, 2025, when stocks rose dramatically after several days of losses amid President Donald Trump's dramatic tariff campaign.

"The benefit of staying invested is, you're going to be in the market on the days when there are the biggest gains," said Patrick Means, vice president and branch manager at a Schwab branch in Dallas, speaking to USA TODAY in 2025.

That leads to our second tip:

Stick to the plan

Stocks rise and fall, sometimes dramatically. For long-term investors, experts say, the best strategy is usually to sit back and let the drama play out.

Bear markets are usually shorter than bull markets, Schwab notes. Since 1966, the average bear market has lasted about 15 months, while the average bull market has endured for nearly six years.

Following an investment plan over the long term takes discipline, and it's one of Vanguard's Principles for Investing Success. The others: create clear, appropriate investment goals; maintain a balanced and diversified mix of investments; and minimize costs.

"You can't control the markets. You don't know what they're going to do," said James Martielli, head of investment and trading services at Vanguard, speaking to USA TODAY in 2025. "You can control yourself by not making emotional decisions."

And that leads to our third tip:

Do nothing at all

How stocks are doing today shouldn't matter much to an investor who is in for the long haul, advisers say.

And that advice applies to just about everyone: If you aren't in for the long haul, experts say, stocks might not be for you.

"If you need funds soon, don't have it invested," said Randy Bruns, a certified financial planner in Naperville, Illinois, speaking to USA TODAY in 2025. "If you don't need the funds for 15 years, stop looking at the volatility."

Market downturns tend to be brief. Recessions are shorter than they seem. Anyone who is saving for retirement or for other long-term goals can generally ride them out.

"If you have the luxury of being a long-term investor, be one," Akullian said.

Consider buying stocks at a discount

While financial experts don't like to see investors make impulsive trades, stock market dips do create opportunities for anyone looking to buy stocks on sale.

The stock market has been historically overpriced. Bargains are few. A market correction means, in effect, that an investor is potentially getting a better deal on any stocks they buy.

If you're leery about the volatility of individual stocks, one alternative is to purchase broad index funds, which are generally less risky.

Another option is to look "for stocks that are not quite as sensitive to swings," BlackRock's Akullian said.

Some mutual funds and exchange-traded funds are tailored to minimize volatility, with a portfolio that is more predictable than the market as a whole. BlackRock offers an explainer sheet on "minimum volatility" investing.

1. What are spousal Social Security benefits?

2. How are spousal Social Security benefits calculated?

Depending on factors like your age and how close you are to retirement, your spousal benefit can be as high as 50% of your former partner's monthly benefits check.

While you can apply for benefits at age 62, you'll receive a reduced benefit based on how far you are from your full retirement age.

3. Who qualifies for a former spouse's Social Security benefits?

The ex-spouse of an individual who paid Social Security taxes can qualify to receive those benefits if they were married to the beneficiary for at least 10 consecutive years. In most cases, qualifying individuals must also be at least 62 and cannot be currently married.

4. How old does your ex-spouse need to be before you can apply for benefits?

Your former spouse must be at least 62 years old before you can apply to receive spousal benefits.

5. Can you apply for benefits earlier than age 62?

If you are disabled and your former spouse earned Social Security wages, you may apply for spousal disability benefits as early as age 50.

However, you still need to meet the requirement of having been married for at least 10 consecutive years and divorced for at least two. Additionally, you cannot be currently married to apply for an ex-spouse's benefits.

6. What if you're caring for children you had with your ex-spouse?

If your ex-spouse passes away and you're caring for your shared dependents, including children you had together and any of your spouse's children whom you also raised, you can apply for benefits at any age instead of waiting until you turn 62.

In this case, "dependents" refers to children 16 years or younger. It also extends to any dependents who became disabled at age 22 or younger.

7. What if you were remarried to someone who has since passed away?

While you usually can't claim your ex's benefits if you've since remarried, you might be eligible for your first spouse's benefits if the person you remarried has also passed away.

In this case, you can claim your ex-partner's benefits if you were married to them for at least a decade.

Alternatively, you can collect your more recent partner's benefits if you were married for at least nine months before their death.

8. If you remarried someone who has since passed away, can you claim benefits based on both their work record and that of your deceased ex-spouse?

You cannot collect benefits based on both partners' work records. You can claim either your first ex-partner's Social Security benefits or your more recent deceased partner's benefits, but not both.

9. Will your ex's living beneficiaries be informed if you apply for benefits?

No, the Social Security Administration will not let your ex-partner (if still living) or their remaining beneficiaries know that you applied to claim benefits based on your ex-spouse's work history.

Relatedly, you don't need their permission to apply for benefits. You can apply, and the SSA will take care of the rest while dealing solely with you, not your ex's family.

10. Can you still receive benefits if your ex-spouse's current partner is also receiving spousal benefits?

Yes. As long as you qualify for benefits based on the criteria above, you can receive spousal benefits, and no benefits will be taken away from your ex-spouse's other surviving beneficiaries.

11. Can you collect an ex-spouse's benefits and your own Social Security benefit at the same time?

Yes, you can collect both benefits simultaneously. However, if you worked outside the home and earned Social Security wages, the Social Security Administration will pay your individual benefit first.

If your spousal benefits based on your ex-spouse's work history are higher than your individual benefits, the SSA combines your benefits amount with your spousal benefit to ensure you receive the higher payment.

12. Can you still work after applying for spousal benefits?

Although collecting spousal Social Security benefits from your ex-partner can give your budget some breathing room, the amount is likely not enough to live on.

Whether you're still working your regular job or you've picked up a side gig to supplement your Social Security income, you can still collect spousal benefits based on your partner's record.

However, your overall benefit amount will be reduced if you receive benefits before your full retirement age. Your full retirement age is based on the year you were born and can range from age 66 (born in or before 1954) to age 67 (born in 1960 or later).

You'll also receive a reduced benefit if you earn more than $24,480 for the 2026 tax year. For every $2 you earn over that amount, the SSA deducts $1 from your yearly benefit.

Bottom line

Being the former spouse of a deceased Social Security beneficiary doesn't automatically qualify you for spousal benefits after their death. However, if you qualify, apply for them via the Social Security Administration's online application portal.

An additional Social Security benefit can be a huge help to your retirement budget and may lower your financial stress, so make sure to follow through.

GENEVA, March 4 (Reuters) - An independent United Nations probe investigating rights violations in Iran condemned on Wednesday attacks by ‌Israel and the United States on Iran as well as Tehran's retaliatory ‌strikes across the region, saying they violated the UN Charter.

The United Nations Charter bans the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.

"These attacks, which were followed by Iran's retaliatory strikes across the region, run counter to the UN Charter," the U.N. Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran said in a ‌statement.

It also expressed deep shock ⁠over a strike that hit the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls school in Minab in southern Iran on Saturday, the first day ⁠of the U.S. and Israeli attacks.

Most of the victims appear to have been schoolgirls aged seven to 12, it said.

Earlier on Wednesday a separate U.N. panel of experts said more than 160 children were killed, citing reports.

The U.N. fact-finding probe said ‌the Iranian population was now caught between a large-scale military campaign that may go on for weeks and a government in Tehran which has a long record of human rights abuses.

Tens of thousands of people were detained and face torture and the death penalty, the U.N. probe said, following a brutal crackdown ‌on protests that began on December 28, 2025, in response to the country's economic crisis.

It said protesters currently detained in prisons could be put at risk from any U.S.-Israeli strikes. A ‌British couple jailed in Iran described on Tuesday explosions shaking Evin prison where they are being held and damage to their wing as the conflict intensifies.

The statement said the killing of dozens of Iranian officials - who have ‌included Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei - in the U.S.-Israeli airstrikes was not an acceptable means to deliver justice under international law.

LONDON (AP) — Opposition politicians accused U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer of weakening Britain's "special relationship" with the United States by differing from U.S. President Donald Trump over Iran and drawing his ire.

Trump on Tuesday called Britain "uncooperative" and slammed Starmer as "not Winston Churchill" after Starmer initially rebuffed a U.S. request to use U.K. bases for attacks on Iran. The prime minister later said American planes could use bases in England and on the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia to strike Iranian missile systems that are targeting British allies in the Middle East.

Trump remains annoyed, and Starmer is bracing to see whether the president's anger has an impact on trans-Atlantic ties and trade.

Not all smooth sailing

Churchill set the tone for the post-World War II trans-Atlantic bond by declaring during a 1946 speech at Westminster College in Missouri that there was "a special relationship between the British Commonwealth and Empire and the United States."

That relationship has been sustained over the decades by a common language, shared interests, military cooperation and cultural affection. Sometimes that has been bolstered by close personal bonds, such as the friendship between Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and U.S. President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s, or between Tony Blair and Bill Clinton in the 1990s.

There have also been periods of strain. In 1956, Israel, Britain and France attempted to seize control of the Suez Canal after its nationalization by Egypt. Their forces eventually withdrew after U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower's administration refused to back the effort and threatened sanctions. It was a stark reminder of Britain's waning power and American ascendancy on the world stage.

A decade later, relations hit a new low when British Prime Minister Harold Wilson resisted pressure from U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson to join the Vietnam War.

Blair was seeking to avoid a similar rift when he sent British troops to join the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 based on what turned out to be faulty intelligence about Saddam Hussein's alleged weapons of mass destruction. The conflict killed 179 British troops, around 4,500 American personnel and many thousands of Iraqis. Blair's decision remains one of the most controversial by a British leader in decades.

Starmer keeping 'cool head'

Center-left leader Starmer has forged surprisingly cordial relations with Trump since the president's return to office in 2025, but friction between the two leaders has been building for months. Trump's threat to take over Greenland was denounced by Starmer and other European leaders earlier this year.

Recently, Trump has condemned Britain's agreement to hand over the Chagos Islands, home to the Diego Garcia base, to Mauritius, despite his administration earlier backing the deal.

Starmer has strongly implied that he considers the war on Iran illegal and said the U.K. government doesn't believe in "regime change from the skies."

Cabinet minister James Murray said Wednesday Starmer was acting with "a cool head, with a real clarity of purpose," and argued that Britain's relationship with the U.S. remains "historic, long-lasting and deep."

But opponents and critics in the media claim that Starmer is sidelining the U.K. at a crucial time. The right-leaning Daily Mail proclaimed: "Starmer takes the Great out of Britain."

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said that Starmer should have declared support for the U.S.-Israeli offensive.

On Monday, an Iranian-made drone struck a British air force base on Cyprus, causing "minimal" damage and no injuries. Badenoch said that Starmer "has the wrong priorities."

"When our bases are attacked, they call the lawyers," she said Wednesday.

UK hopes Trump's anger is temporary

The U.S. president's moods can be fleeting, and British officials hope this latest squall will blow over quickly.

Trump's threat this week to cut of trade with Spain after Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez condemned the strikes on Iran as "unjustifiable" and "dangerous" shows how high the stakes can be.

The U.K. deal with Mauritius over the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean, which Britain says is crucial to securing the future of the Diego Garcia base, is on hold until U.S. backing is secured. A trade deal signed by Trump and Starmer with great fanfare in May still hasn't been finalized, and has been cast into doubt by Trump's recent tariff pronouncements.

Peter Ricketts, a former U.K. national security adviser, said that Trump appears to want "completely blind loyalty" from allies, and had launched an "unfair" broadside against Starmer. But he said that British authorities shouldn't overreact.

"I think the prime minister should keep calm and carry on," he told the BBC.
