BEIJING, March 4 (Reuters) - Two senior Chinese officials were absent on Wednesday from the ranks of China's highest tier of power at the opening of the country's two largest political events of the year, with ‌top Communist Party cadres ensnared in a wave of purges.

Zhang Youxia, China's highest-ranking general, was not among the ‌party's 23-member Politburo at the opening of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), according to a Reuters witness. Neither was Ma Xingrui, formerly the party's top official in the western Chinese region of Xinjiang.

Thousands of delegates have arrived in Beijing this week for the annual meetings of the CPPCC and the National People's Congress, where officials will unveil this year's economic targets and map out key policy goals for the next five years.

Zhang, who is also a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), was put under investigation in January. ‌Ma has not been in the public eye since late October.

Also in October, He Weidong, who was the co-vice chair of China's military leadership body with Zhang, was expelled from the Communist Party for corruption, reducing the 24-member Politburo to 23.

The downfalls of Zhang and He have cut China's CMC to two members - President Xi Jinping, the chairman, and newly promoted Vice Chairman Zhang Shengmin.

Their downfalls point to Xi's willingness to remove senior political figures - including sitting Politburo members - even if they create temporary uncertainty about governance.

Beijing's intensified anti-graft drive in recent years has also touched sectors linked to the military, including aerospace. Zhou Xinmin, the ‌former head of state-owned conglomerate Aviation Industry Corp of China, was among three lawmakers ousted from Parliament last month. No explanation was provided.

The purges of sitting Politburo members are a reminder of similar incidents over 10 years ago when Xi was first coming to power.

Bo Xilai, the former Chongqing party chief who fell from grace following a major political scandal involving his wife, was jailed for life in 2013 for corruption and abuse of power.

In the years that followed, other serving Politburo members ‌also fell from power, including Zhou Yongkang, a former security chief, and Sun Zhengcai, also a former Chongqing party chief.

Ma Xingrui was removed from his position as Xinjiang party chief in July "to be appointed to another position," according to an official announcement. It is not clear if he was ‌ever transferred to a new role.

His most recent known public appearance was at the Communist Party Central Committee's Fourth Plenum in late October. Since then, Ma has been absent from the state broadcaster's footage of several key events, including a Politburo study session in November and the annual Central Economic Work Conference in December.

Before entering regional politics in southern ‌China's Guangdong province and later in Xinjiang, he served as the director of the China National Space Administration and was vice minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

HAVANA (AP) — Cuba said Wednesday it has filed terrorism charges against six suspects it claims were aboard a Florida-flagged speedboat that is alleged to have opened fire on soldiers in waters off the island's north coast.

The Prosecutor's Office said in a statement that the suspects of Cuban origin remain in pretrial detention, adding that it will ensure "due process" as it continues to act "in defense of our people and the country's institutions."

The government has said 10 heavily armed Cubans from the U.S. who were on board the boat opened fire as they tried to infiltrate the island to commit acts of terrorism. It said that Cuban soldiers returned fire, killing four suspects.

The government unveiled items said to have been found on the boat, including a dozen high-powered weapons, more than 12,800 pieces of ammunition and 11 pistols.

Chief prosecutor Edward Robert Campbell has told The that terrorism charges carry a possible sentence of up to 30 years in prison or even the death penalty, although Cuba has maintained a moratorium on the latter since 2003.

VATICAN CITY, March 4 (Reuters) - The Vatican's top diplomat warned on Wednesday that the ongoing U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran ‌undermine international law and said nations do not have a ‌right to launch "preventive wars", in an unusually direct criticism of the military campaign.

"If states were to be recognised as having a right to 'preventive war' … the entire world could risk going up in flames," Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's Secretary of State, said in an interview with Vatican News.

Asked about the U.S.-Israeli strikes, ‌which have pressed on for the fifth day, Parolin said they had caused a "weakening of international law (that) is truly alarming".

"The rule of force has replaced the force of law, with the conviction that peace can arise only after the enemy has been annihilated," the cardinal told the Vatican's media outlet.

It is unusual for Vatican diplomats to openly critique specific military campaigns. ‌Vatican officials usually prefer to avoid press coverage and operate behind the scenes, leaving open the possibility of the Church serving as mediator in conflicts.

U.S. President Donald Trump has said the strikes against Iran were needed to prevent the country from developing a nuclear weapon, which Tehran denies ‌seeking, and to thwart its long-range ballistic missile program.

Parolin, the Vatican's lead diplomat since 2013 and a front-runner in the 2025 conclave of cardinals that eventually elected Pope ‌Leo, is known as someone who is usually very cautious with words.

Leo did not address the ongoing conflict in his weekly audience on Wednesday with pilgrims in St. Peter's Square.

The pope made an impassioned ‌appeal on Sunday for an end to the conflict. He called for a stop what he termed a "spiral of violence".

Emotional tributes began to pour in after the identification of four US service members killed in a deadly Iranian drone strike in Kuwait, the first American deaths in the war with Iran.

While they all served as soldiers under the US Army Reserve, they played many roles, including a "heroic son" and a mother of two who was days away from returning home.

The Pentagon identified four of the six US service members killed Sunday during an attack on a makeshift operations center in Shuaiba port as Capt. Cody Khork, 35; Sgt. Declan Coady, 20; Sgt. 1st Class Nicole Amor, 39; and Sgt. 1st Class Noah Tietjens, 42. Two other soldiers who were killed in the strike have not been publicly identified.

All four were assigned to the 103rd Sustainment Command, an Army Reserve sustainment unit out of Iowa, and were serving at what Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described as a "tactical operation center that was fortified," when a projectile made it through air defenses in an attack that came quickly and without warning.

This screengrab, taken from a video geolocated by CNN, shows smoke rising from a US facility at the Port of Shuaiba on Sunday. - Social Media

The attack happened on just the second day of US and Israeli military operations against Iran. For some of the soldiers' families, the loss is accompanied by shock, because they didn't initially consider their loved one's assignment to be especially dangerous.

"You don't go to Kuwait thinking something's going to happen, and for her to be one of the first – it hurts," Amor's husband Joey told the .

President Donald Trump has warned there will likely be more service members killed, as the "big wave" of attacks against Iran is yet to come.

"They're great people," Trump said about the six killed in a phone interview with the Daily Mail. "And, you know, we expect that to happen, unfortunately. Could happen continuous — it could happen again."

The soldiers were honored as "relentlessly, consistently, and fearlessly" serving the country, and making "the ultimate sacrifice," said Brig. Gen. Clint A. Barnes, deputy commanding general of the 1st Theater Sustainment Command, a group based out of Fort Knox, Kentucky, composed of troops from units nationwide assigned to rotational support roles overseas.

The four service members varied in careers, but all dedicated themselves to public service, thousands of miles away from their families despite the unmistakable risks.

Here is what we know about the US service members.

Capt. Cody Khork

Khork, who was from Lakeland, Florida, enlisted in the National Guard in 2009 as a multiple launch rocket system/fire direction specialist. He commissioned as a military police officer in the Army Reserve in 2014, and deployed to Saudi Arabia; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; and Poland.

Behind his sense of duty was "a man whose life was defined by devotion, character, and service," his parents and stepmother said in a statement Tuesday.

"Cody was truly the life of the party, known for his infectious spirit, generous heart, and deep care for those who served alongside him and for everyone blessed to know him," the statement said.

Khork loved history and had a degree in political science, which showed "his sharp mind and his sincere appreciation for the principles and sacrifices that have shaped our nation," his family said.

His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Joint Service Achievement Medal.

Sgt. 1st Class Nicole Amor

Amor, from White Bear Lake, Minnesota, enlisted as an automated logistics specialist in the National Guard in 2005. She transferred to the Army Reserve a year later and deployed to Kuwait and Iraq in 2019.

Amor, who was a mother to a high school senior and a fourth-grader, was just days away from returning home to her family, her husband, Joey Amor, told the AP.

"She was almost home," Joey Amor told the AP, and said he had spoken to her two hours before she died, but, "She just never responded in the morning."

A week before the attack, she had been moved off base to a shipping container-style building, her husband told AP.

"They were dispersing because they were in fear that the base they were on was going to get attacked and they felt it was safer in smaller groups in separate places," he said.

Amor's decorations included the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said the state was mourning the loss of Amor.

"She answered the call to serve and gave her life in service to our state and nation," Walz wrote on X. "Minnesotans are wrapping our arms around her loved ones."

Sgt. 1st Class Noah Tietjens

Photo of Sgt. 1st Class Noah Tietjens, killed in an Iranian drone strike in Kuwait. - US Army

Tietjens was from Bellevue, Nebraska, and enlisted in the Army Reserve in 2006 as a wheeled vehicle mechanic. He had deployed to Kuwait twice before, in 2009 and 2019. His awards and decorations also include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal.

"Sgt. Tietjens was the kind of guy that was always around to help you. No matter what you needed … he made you feel important. And that's hard to find sometimes in the military," Army Staff Sgt. Jonn Coleman, a fellow Nebraska soldier, told CNN affiliate KETV.

Coleman credits Tietjens' mentorship as the reason he was able to advance his military career: "He took me under his wing and got me to where I needed to be."

In Bellevue, Tietjens and his wife and son were prominent members of a martial arts studio, where he earned a black belt in Taekwondo and was an instructor, according to a tribute the studio posted on social media about him.

"He did not simply wear a Black Belt, he lived it," Martial Arts International said in the post, praising Tietjens as "a devoted husband and father." The studio said a college fund has been established for Tietjens' son.

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen called for prayers for Tietjens' family and praised the fallen soldier's service to the country.

"Noah stepped up to serve and defend the American people from foreign enemies around the world — a sacrifice we must never forget," the governor wrote on X.

Nebraska US Sen. Pete Ricketts said in a statement his "heart and prayers are with the Tietjens family as they mourn the loss of their heroic son."

Sgt. Declan Coady

Photo of Sgt. Declan Coady, killed in an Iranian drone strike in Kuwait. - US Army

Coady, from Des Moines, Iowa, was posthumously promoted from specialist to sergeant. He told his father just last week he'd been recommended for the promotion, the AP reported.

Coady enlisted in the Army Reserve in 2023 as an Army information technology specialist. Among the youngest in his class, Coady stood out to his instructors, his father, Andrew Coady, told the AP.

"He was very good at what he did," he said.

While deployed in Kuwait, Coady was continuing his coursework online and had set his sights on becoming a commissioned officer, according to the AP. He was studying information systems, cybersecurity and computer science at Drake University, school officials told CNN, describing him as "well-loved and highly dedicated."

For his sister, Keira Coady, the loss is hard to accept. "I still don't fully think it's real," she told AP. "I just remember all of our conversations about what he was going to do when he came back."

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds honored Coady for his service, saying in a statement he "heroically answered his nation's call to duty and gave the ultimate sacrifice."

Coady's military awards include the Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon.

This story has been with additional details.

Below Deck fans have made no secret of the fact that they'd love to get Kate Chastain back on the show. She was an awesome Chief Stew, and viewers would love to see her back on their screens. After all, her friend Chef Ben Robinson made a comeback. But is this something Kate would do? Absolutely not. Unfortunately, she wouldn't want to return as Chief Stew.

Kate Chastain wants to be a charter guest rather than a member of staff

Despite being one of the wittiest Chief Stews in the franchise, Kate has had her share of responsibility. On Watch What Happens Live with host Andy Cohen, the House of Villains alum said that she wouldn't say no to returning as a guest, though, or in some capacity with less responsibility.

"Absolutely not would I ever (come back)," Kate replied when a guest asked if she'd ever come back to Below Deck. "I mean, I would like to go back as a charter guest. I think that would be super fun. Who do I need to call (to make that happen)?"

She magnanimously added that she also wouldn't be opposed to returning in a role with less responsibility. "I might go back just to be like the third stewardess," she admitted. "I wanna be down doing laundry. I want no responsibility for one week. Maybe."

That's fair. She's had her fill of being in charge. Andy said that it would actually be interesting to have Katie, Aesha Scott, Daisy Kelilher, and Fraser Olender be Chief Stews as guests charter. That would be fun to watch!

Kate agreed too. "I know! Because we know the shortcuts they would take," she explained. "We could catch them and be like uhm…"

Below Deck Down Under is streaming on Peacock.

*Boy Meets World* costumer Julie Yang Silver is shedding some light on the frustrating behind-the-scenes conversations that revolved around star Danielle Fishel's weight.

Yang Silver, who joined the show's costume department in season 3 and stayed on for the remainder of the show, recently made her debut on *Pod Meets World*, the rewatch podcast hosted by stars Fishel, Will Friedle, and Rider Strong. Though Fishel was absent for the podcast's March 2 episode, her name was repeatedly invoked as Yang Silver recounted the "heated discussions" about her wardrobe that took place during the show's final season.

Friedle, who played Eric Matthews across the sitcom's seven seasons, at one point said, "I put on a bunch of weight towards the end [of the show]. Danielle put on a little bit of weight towards the end, but of course it was all about how *she* put on 'so much' weight."

The actor then recounted a story from Fishel, who told him that she was allowed to help pick out Topanga's wedding dress for her season 7 marriage to Ben Savage's Cory Matthews, with one caveat: "None of them were allowed to be sleeveless."

Friedle explained. "She thinks that one of the reasons was because certain powers-that-be thought that she looked too heavy to show her arms bare."

"Yes," Yang Silver confirmed. "It was a constant conversation."

The costume designer noted that she and producer Karen MacKain were vocal advocates for Fishel against the show's bosses, adding, "And the thing was, Danielle was not heavy. That's what I was trying to explain to them. I was like, 'she's still a size 2, I don't know what you guys are talking about.'"

She argued that Fishel, who was 19 when the final season aired, had just "bloomed outwards," explaining, "Danielle wasn't very tall, so if you are bustier and you're not very tall, you're going to look larger. But she wasn't. You guys saw her every single day. She was not large at all."

Yang Silver later noted that the issue of sleeves previously arose when preparing wardrobe for the season 5 episode that sees the high school aged cast attend prom.

"Trina [McGee] was seven months pregnant and we were trying to hide that. And it was the same thing for Danielle, where [they said] she needed sleeves," she recalled. "I was like, 'No, that's going to look ridiculous for prom.'"

Yang Silver said they ultimately compromised by putting a shawl over Topanga's dress. She added that throughout the years, a top priority for her and MacKain was that no one bring the weight concerns directly to Fishel.

"Karen and I [were] just like, We don't want to hear anyone ever say anything to Danielle about this,'" Yang Silver said.

But when Friedle asked whether Fishel ever became aware of such discussions, the costumer admitted that it's likely the actress did figure it out.

"I think she knew," said Yang Silver. "But we really tried to hide that from her… Because she's a teenager. That's going to get in her head. That's what Karen and I were both saying: She is a young woman, and that can do so much psychological damage, and it's so not worth it. We were treading very, very lightly."

Indeed, Fishel previously discussed struggling with the show's perception of her weight on an August 2024 episode of the podcast, where she recounted her shock upon learning that her and Friedle's weight gain had inspired a season 7 storyline.

"Will had gained some weight. I had gained some weight. [And the writers said], 'Obviously, you guys have gained a little bit of weight, so we're gonna write an episode about it. And we just wanted you to know. And here's what it's gonna be. It's gonna be really funny,'" Fishel recounted, per PEOPLE, noting that they were informed of the storyline rather than being asked their feelings about it.

She added, "I remember thinking, 'Wow, these people think I've gained enough weight [that] we have to write an entire episode about my weight gain... And I have to say I'm fine with it, because they didn't even present to me another alternative.'"
