After Karim Diané landed the role of Jay-Den Kraag, a Klingon cadet at the titular *Starfleet Academy* of the new *Star Trek* series, co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman suggested the kind of meet-up that would have any diehard Trekker selling their memorabilia to secure: a one-on-one with the great Michael Dorn.

Having played the most famous of Klingons, Worf, starting with the Jean-Luc Picard-captained *Star Trek: The Next Generation*, Dorn never properly mentored a younger actor coming into the universe of *Trek*. He doesn't quite think of his FaceTime phone call with Diané as "mentoring" in the traditional sense, but he did offer his own experiences with the transformation process to this Klingon-in-the-making.

"To think that you were gonna be doing something like this was kind of unheard of. I don't know about anything that's happened like this before in the business," Dorn tells ** in an exclusive joint interview with Diané. "Thirty or 40 years later, you're talking to the next generation, basically. It just doesn't happen. So I wasn't prepared for it, but I was happy to be part of it."

Diané tells Dorn: "I obviously Googled the crap out of you beforehand and watched every single video that you have ever posted on the internet about the prosthetics process, so I felt mentored by you before I even got the chance to talk to you for the first time. There's a couple podcasts where you're just brutally honest about how challenging this experience is, and so I felt guided by you."

Karim Diane and Michael Dorn

Karim Diané and Michael Dorn meet behind the scenes of the Rose Bowl Parade.

Dorn holds the distinction of the most franchise appearances as a series regular actor, which famously includes all seven seasons of *Star Trek: The Next Generation* and multiple movies. He returned as Worf in four seasons of *Star Trek: Deep Space Nine* and, more recently, in season 3 of *Star Trek: Picard*.

Diané's Jay-Den arrived in *Starfleet Academy* as an aspiring medical officer, which inherently feels at odds with the brutalism and warrior code of Klingon culture. Episode 4, titled "Vox in Excelso" and streaming now on Paramount+, digs into Jay-Den's backstory and how his pacifist nature made him feel like an outsider at a young age. Flashbacks depict the moment Jay-Den's family abandoned him on a planet as he grapples with the survival of the Klingons in the present.

Diané relates to Jay-Den's origin story on a personal level. "I am West African. So I'm half Guinean and half Congolese, and I'm from the Mandingo tribe," he says. "Mandingos are known for their warriors. I was raised to essentially be a warrior, be a tough sports guy, and like basketball and soccer. I had no interest in any of that. I just wanted to go dance and sing and go act and do plays."

Dorn and Diané wouldn't meet in person until the Rose Bowl Parade in Los Angeles this past New Year's, for which the *Starfleet* cadet rode the "Space for Everybody" *Star Trek* float alongside fellow franchise stars Rebecca Romijn (*Star Trek: Strange New Worlds*), Tig Notaro (*Star Trek: Starfleet Academy*), and George Takei (OG *Star Trek*). But it was the day of Diané's first Jay-Den makeup test, prior to filming season 1 of *Starfleet Academy* in 2024, that he spoke with Dorn for the first time over FaceTime.

Much of what they discussed on that call involved the Shakespearean demeanor of the Klingons and swapping war stories over the prosthetics process. For Diané, it initially took him between four-and-a-half and five hours in the chair every day, including hair, makeup, prosthetics, and costume.

"I would have to wake up at 1 a.m. just to get to work, film like 18-hour days," he recalls. "Some weeks I'm working five days a week." The *Starfleet* team eventually cut that time down to two hours. "I get ready faster than Genesis now," Diané adds, referring to costar Bella Shepard, who plays Dar-Sha cadet Genesis Lythe.

For Dorn, starting out on *Star Trek* in the 1980s, it would take him three hours, five days a week, every week.

"But after two years, that's when I went, 'Guys, I just can't do this anymore,'" he recalls to Diané. "And they got it down to same thing to where you are, where it's two-and-a-half hours."

Michael Dorn as Worf in Star Trek: Picard on Paramount+

Sarah Coulter/Paramount+

Decades later when Dorn returned for *Star Trek: Picard* (2020), "They got it down to an hour for the full makeup," he adds, "but they had two people working on me."

Diané felt a mix of excitement and nerves heading into this meeting with Worf himself. He acknowledges how "sometimes you meet people in this industry, and they aren't the nicest." He wasn't sure what he was going to get.

"But I got on the phone, and immediately he was so chill and really kind," he says of Dorn. "That felt very nice because playing this character, I went in feeling like people are gonna compare me to him. So you go in nervous in a lot of ways — not sure how it's all gonna be received by the fans."

Dorn can relate.

"You're stepping into this whole *Star Trek* world, which, I gotta tell you, nobody is ready for," he says. "For us [on *Next Generation*], we had the fans and the press on our ass about, 'Who do you think you are?' 'Do you think you are replacing Kirk and Spock?' 'Who are you supposed to be?'"

Diané responds, "Listening to Michael say that, I'm like, wow, history really repeated itself, 'cause we all are experiencing the same exact thing right now [on *Starfleet Academy*]. Like, 'You think you're a Klingon?!' You're not this and that. It's with me every single time I open my phone. I get notifications. I'm probably the most chronically online out of the entire cast. I'm on every single social media platform. I go through everything, just because I like to keep my feet on the ground. There definitely is a lot of chatter."

Both Dorn and Diané agree: "There's definitely a toxic corner in the fan base."

At the same time, they acknowledge the waves of positivity percolating around the internet.

"This is the most rewarding job I have ever had in my life," Diané comments when the actors speak with EW on the Wednesday before the *Starfleet Academy *episode 3 drop. "These episodes have been out for six days and two episodes, and already my Instagram is blowing up. My Facebook messages are flooded. People are freaking out, and they love these characters. So, yeah, I'm honestly happy to do this for season 3 and 4 and 5 and 6."**

*Marty Supreme* and *I Love LA* actress Odessa A'zion has announced her exit from a new movie following backlash over her casting.

Controversy bubbled up online after news broke earlier this week that A'zion — the 25-year-old daughter of *Better Things*' Pamela Adlon — would star in *Deep Cuts*, an A24-backed adaptation of Holly Brickley's 2025 novel to be directed by *The Iron Claw* filmmaker Sean Durkin.

The recent Actor Awards nominee was set to portray a half-Mexican, half-Jewish supporting character named Zoe Gutierrez, leading to intense pushback to her casting on social media.**** On Wednesday night, A'zion, who is Jewish but has no Mexican heritage, shared a series of Instagram posts claiming that she initially auditioned for a different role, but was offered the part of Zoe instead — and that she accepted without reading the full story.

"Guys!! I am with ALL of you and I am NOT doing this movie. F--- that. I'm OUT," A'zion wrote on the social media platform, before elaborating on how her casting happened.****"THANK YOU guys for bringing this to my attention. I AGREE WITH EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU! This is why I love you guys. I'm so so sorry that this happened. It is SO important for me to let you in on how it all went down," she said. "I went in for Percy, but was offered Zoe instead and instantly said yes! I'm so pissed y'all, I hadn't read the book and should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting… and now that I know what I know??? F--- that! IM OUT."****A'zion said she'd "never take a role from someone else that's meant to do it" and expressed that she felt "there are a plentitude of people more than capable of playing this role and I am NOT one of them."

She doubled down on her earlier claim, telling her followers, "I was so excited I just said hell yeah cause I knew how much I loved the story so I was just down to be a part of it, and so excited to work with this group of people! But f--- thattttttt y'all never again!"

The BAFTA nominee finished with a pair of slides on her Instagram Story, telling fans she's "been so busy with other work" and hadn't had time to read the full script before signing on to the project.

"I wish I found that time sooner and clocked her name. That's all that's mentioned in the script when I just finally did. Thank you thank THANK YOU GUYS FOR LETTING ME KNOW!!!" she continued. "Still haven't read the book but the story in the script is focused on Percy and Joe, so of course on my initial read that was my main focus as well. I was happy to be involved as a different role, but I just can not do it knowing more about Zoe now. I love you guysss sleep tight."

A'zion is coming off of two of her most notable projects to date, following the season 1 finale (and renewal of) her HBO comedy series *I Love LA*,* *as well as her breakout role opposite Timothée Chalamet in the theatrical hit *Marty Supreme*.

Disney's live-action *Tangled* actor Milo Manheim has saddled up for his biggest role yet — and now he's revealed some of the intense preparation he's endured to bring his character, Flynn Rider, to the big screen.

The 24-year-old *Zombies* series alum appeared on Thursday's *Live With Kelly and Mark*, where he teased to cohosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos all of the physical feats he's tackling as he slips into Flynn's boots for the studio's remake of the 2010 animated classic.

"Yes, *Tangled*, I'm here for you. I can't believe that it's happening. I love this movie," Manheim — the son of *Law & Order* actress Camryn Manheim — said on the talk show, referencing his part opposite Teagan Croft as Rapunzel.**

Manheim said that he's now "learning how to hold my breath for five minutes" and "how to ride a horse right now" before shooting begins.

"That's the thing I'm most excited about, whatever y'all need me to do. They're looking for a giant stallion!" he said, as Ripa and Consuelos noted that he's already a particularly tall person, so any horse he rides would need to be equally as tall.

The star said, "They're going to make these angles work, you guys, movie magic! But I've always loved horses. I can't wait for that."

Manheim added that the "experience has opened up so many doors," including allowing him to scale new heights — literally — as he's "learning how to rock climb right now" as well.

"I'm meeting so many fantastic people, I get to travel the world," he said of the role, which marks the latest in Disney's growing filmography of live-action adaptations of its animated classics, with the most recent being 2025's $1 billion-grossing *Lilo & Stitch*.

In a prior interview with * *(watch below), Manheim revealed that Disney informed him and Croft of their castings mere minutes before the announcement went wide.

"It's important the world knows this! People think that I booked this like a long time ago and I've been keeping it a secret," Manheim told EW earlier in January. "I found out 10 minutes before the news was released that I'd be playing Flynn. So that day was — I woke up, just like any other day, and by the end of the day... it was beautiful. The world knew, it was great."

Manheim and Croft take over the roles of Flynn and Rapunzel from the animated original's voice actors Zachary Levi and Mandy Moore, who fronted the prior production that went on to become one of Disney's most popular modern releases.

*Tangled *earned just under $600 million at the global box office during its original theatrical run, with legendary musician Alan Menken's soundtrack tune "I See the Light" scoring an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song in 2011.

The film also spawned other projects, including the Disney Channel animated series *Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure*, the short film *Tangled Ever After*, a themed section of Disney World's Magic Kingdom park, and a full boat ride based on the film that opened in 2024 at the Tokyo DisneySea theme park.

Disney has not yet announced a release date — or additional casting, including who will play the villain, Mother Gothel — for the live-action *Tangled*.

Diamonds are forever — and so are some epic love stories.

At the world premiere of Margot Robbie's buzzy new adaptation of *Wuthering Heights*, the Australian actress paid tribute to Elizabeth Taylor's legendary Hollywood romance with Richard Burton by donning Taylor's iconic Cartier Taj Mahal necklace on the red carpet. Burton, Taylor's husband at the time, famously gave the star the diamond necklace for her 40th birthday in 1972, during a getaway in Budapest.

"There's something kind of Cathy and Heathcliff about Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in my mind, so it felt appropriate," Robbie told *Access Hollywood* at the premiere Wednesday, likening Burton and Taylor's tumultuous relationship to that of her and Jacob Elordi's characters in the film.

"It's crazy," she said of being able to wear the necklace. "I remember when I talked with Andrew, my stylist, about what I was going to wear tonight, he was like, 'I feel like you need to be wearing the equivalent of the [*Titanic* necklace] Heart of the Ocean, so anyways, I feel like this is the real-life equivalent of the Heart of the Ocean. And the history of the necklace is amazing."

Indeed, according to a press release from Taylor's estate, "The pendant's surface bears an inscription in Parsee that reads, 'Love is Everlasting,' along with the name of Nur Jahan, the first woman to receive the jewel as a gift from her husband, Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahangir. The diamond was then passed down to their son, Shah Jahan, who gifted it to his most adored wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Four years later, when she died, the emperor commissioned the iconic Taj Mahal mausoleum as a tribute to her. The monument inspired the naming of the diamond, which found its way to Elizabeth and Richard."

The release further notes that the jewelry "stands as one of the most historically significant pieces in Elizabeth Taylor's legendary collection" and is "steeped in centuries-old symbolism."**

Robbie completed her red carpet look with custom 38-carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond earrings made of vintage old-cut stones set in blackened bronze and gold; a Fred Leighton ring; and a dramatic, form-fitting Schiaparelli gown.

An adaptation of Emily Brontë's influential Gothic novel of the same name, *Wuthering Heights* depicts Catherine and Heathcliff's doomed romance, from their early days spent playing in the wily, windy moors of West Yorkshire to Heathcliff's dramatic departure from the estate and beyond.

However, director Emerald Fennell has cautioned that fans shouldn't expect a faithful adaptation per se — it's more her own reimagining of the classic tale. "The thing is that it's my favorite book in the world," the filmmaker told *The Hollywood Reporter* on the red carpet. "Like many people who love this book, I'm kind of fanatical about it, so I knew right from the get-go I couldn't ever hope to make anything that could even encompass the greatness of this book. All I could do was make a movie that made me feel the way the book made me feel, and therefore it just felt right to say it's *Wuthering* *Heights*, and it isn't."

Julia Roberts shared a rare PDA-filled pic with her husband, Danny Moder, in honor of his 57th birthday.

"🔥🎉🥰🎂🔥 My fav[e] day. My fav[e] man. #131 #WLF," Roberts, 58, captioned a photo of her hugging the cinematographer on Saturday, January 31.

A few of the couple's famous friends sent along their own birthday wishes for Moder, including Rita Wilson who wrote in the comments section, "Happy Birthday!!!!!!❤️❤️❤️love to all Moders!!!!"

It's Complicated actress Alexandra Wentworth added, "Happy Birthday to the great Danny Moder!"

Roberts and Moder will celebrate their 24th wedding anniversary in July. The couple met on the set of Roberts' 2001 crime comedy The Mexican, where Moder was working as a cameraman. Roberts and Moder were both in other relationships at the time but later reconnected once they were single.

Roberts and Moder started stepping out together in 2001 and eventually tied the knot at her ranch in Taos, New Mexico, on July 4, 2002. They share three children: twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, 21, and Henry, 18. (Roberts was previously married to country singer Lyle Lovett for two years, and had high-profile relationships with Kiefer Sutherland and Matthew Perry.)

Last September, Roberts paid sweet tribute to her enduring marriage during an interview with Entertainment Tonight alongside her After the Hunt costars Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri. Roberts didn't hesitate when asked to name an "element that brings you joy" in life.

"Danny Moder," she replied. "Never changes. Never changes. Sometimes more. Sometimes medium."

The Oscar winner has spoken often in the past about how she considered raising a family to be her greatest accomplishment in life. Chatting to CBS News in 2022, Roberts mentioned that she considered being a wife and mom her "full-time job."

"It isn't rainbows and kittens every day, but it does bring me a lot of joy," she admitted.

Roberts went on, "It's just never consumed me, being an actor. It is my dream come true, but it is not my only dream come true. The life that I have built with my husband [and] the life that we've built with our children, that's the best stuff. To come home at the end of the day, triumphantly, to them."

The America's Sweethearts star also shared one way that she and Moder have kept passion alive in their marriage has been to write each other handwritten love notes.

"[Writing handwritten notes is] something Danny and I have always done," she told CBS host Jane Pauley in 2022. "The first letter he ever wrote me, which was seven pages long, I still have it tucked away. One day I'll show it to [my daughter] Hazel and say, 'That's what you're looking for.'"

A year later, Us Weekly exclusively reported that Roberts and Moder were working through the "hard time" that came with their eldest children leaving the nest. (Their twins, Hazel and Phinnaeus, enrolled in college in September 2013 while Henry was finishing high school.)

"Julia's in one of the most bittersweet times in her life right now," a source told Us, before revealing that she was enjoying refocusing on her career.

Julia Roberts Says Husband Danny Moder Is the Key to Their Family's Happiness: 'The Captain of Our Ship'

"Julia has long had the option to pick whatever role she wants and work with whomever she wants, so she's been having fun with that," the insider hinted. "She was turning down films so that she wasn't away from her family for huge periods of time."

On the horizon for Roberts is a leading role in 2027's Panic Carefully opposite Elizabeth Olsen and Eddie Redmayne. Not much is known about the thriller yet, other than that it comes from writer-director Sam Esmail. (Roberts previously starred in Esmail's Prime Video political thriller series Homecoming and the 2024 apocalyptic drama Leave the World Behind.)

Alfalfa is all grown up, and he's now a self-declared "radical Catholic extremist."

Bug Hall, who famously played the character in 1994's *The Little Rascals*, opened up about his decision to take "a vow of poverty" and live off the grid with his wife and five kids in a conversation with *The Daily Mail* (per PEOPLE). Hall, who was born Brandon Barnett, told the outlet he plans to utilize a hydro-electrical dam, and special plumbing and electrical systems in order to unplug in rural Arkansas.

The former actor, who also described himself as a "medieval moralist," said that he left Hollywood following his arrest in Texas in June 2020 for allegedly inhaling air duster.

** confirmed at the time that an EMS call came into the Weatherford Police Department around 8:20 p.m. on the evening of Saturday, June 20, 2020 regarding "someone near the dumpster huffing" on the Fort Worth Highway, and an officer was dispatched.

The actor was taken to Parker County Jail on charges of possession for use to inhale/ingest a volatile chemical, where he was booked on a $1,500 bond, which he posted by the following day. A rep for Hall at the time told EW the charges against the actor were being dropped. He did not have a formal statement at the time.**

The former child star told *The Daily Mail* that his arrest came after 15 years of sobriety, though he admitted to several relapses that were "brushed to the side" in the "high energy" environment of Hollywood. The arrest was a lightbulb moment for him, and he realized he didn't want to live a life of "manipulation, of other people, in how I speak to them, in the stuff that I make or produce… including myself, as an addict."**

Hall continued, "I didn't want to go work some job that was basically meaningless, making widgets to entertain people or distract people."

Previously, the *Stupids* star explained the unconventional move in a YouTube video in April 2025, in which he also revealed that he had donated all of his savings and most of his material possessions.

"It was a hard realization, but it was something that I was pretty firm on, and I still am," he said of leaving Hollywood. "The irony was that I loved the work. I wasn't sort of disillusioned in terms of my love of work. I really, really loved it. I loved film and TV and the process of storytelling, more than any of you."

As for his possessions, he described them as "a big pile of nothing."**

"It really wasn't all that great of a sacrifice compared to what our Lord had planned to give me in return," he said. "The fruits of that decision to live this radical lifestyle."
