Elizabeth Banks shared she gave her teenage sons the sex talk during a family vacation in Cape Cod
Banks used animals like whales and kittens as metaphors to explain sex in a way her kids could understand
The actress joked about being her sons' "worst nightmare mom" for openly discussing topics like tampons and relationships
Elizabeth Banks had a unique approach to giving her two teenagers the sex talk.
While appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday, March 24, the actress, 52, shared that she'd given her two teenage boys — Felix, 15, and Magnus, 13, whom she shares with husband Max Handelman — the sex talk while her family was on vacation in Cape Cod.
Banks began by sharing that she's the "worst nightmare mom" to her two kids.
"I have two teenagers now. I have a 13- and 15-year-old. Yes. And I'm like their worst nightmare mom," she joked. "I'm the mom that's like, 'So, you know about sex, right? And you know about tampons? And you know you have to buy tampons if you get a girlfriend.' And they're like, 'Oh my god, that's too much.'"

Later in the conversation, host Jimmy Kimmel asked Banks if she gave them the sex talk or if her husband stepped in for the challenge.
"No, we did it pretty early on," Banks replied.

"How early?" asked Kimmel.
"I think…well, I find you have to go in stages. So you've got to introduce some things…like they don't want to know really about sex. They want to know where they're from," the mom of two explained. "Like, 'Where did I come from?' And 'Where are babies' and 'What are kittens?'"

Banks explained that she likes to remind parents that they can use other animals as a metaphor, since all mammals "do it the same."
"And so when my son finally asked, 'But mom, how does the penis get in the vagina?' from the backseat of the car while my husband went in to get a coffee at the coffee shop," she shared. "And we were on Cape Cod on vacation, and I was like, 'Oh wow. It's happening right now. Okay, this is it.'"
"And my little one sort of sat up, like, 'I know what's going on. I didn't ask that question, but I'd like to know the answer too,' " remembered Banks. "And I remember, we were talking about going on a whale watch. So I started talking about whale penises and those are like, the biggest ones I think."

The star said there was a screensaver in their house with two whales dancing in the water, and she used that to explain that the whales were "doing it."
"And I literally think I did do the…this like, at one point," Banks said, using her hands to mimic a penis going into a vagina. "And they were like, 'Right, okay.' We ended up talking about kittens and puppies, and they all have penises and vaginas."
