Dormant viruses lurking in the brain could be activated by a head injury and trigger Alzheimer's, research has suggested. Studies have long warned that concussions and blows to the head may raise the risk of neurodegenerative conditions. But now, scientists believe such injuries could 'wake-up' dormant viruses in the brain triggering inflammation and longer-term damage that leads to dementia. The main concern is around herpes viruses, including herpes simplex virus (HSV-1), which causes cold sores — and is carried by four in five adults.
