NEIGHBORS fear someone will have to die or be seriously injured before a 12-foot-long pothole filled with sewage water is repaired.

The Mississippi city's lack of response is boggling to the nearby residents who call the pothole a "death trap."

Homeowners in the Jackson neighborhood are scratching their heads and scrambling to figure out how to fill an abyss of a pothole sitting between two homes.

The so-called crater is 12 feet long and well over six feet deep.

Though no one has been injured so far, many residents are scared a vehicle could be totaled or a passenger could end up in the hospital if they fell in.

It stretches more than halfway across the road, making it terrifyingly easy to fall in if it isn't seen in time.

"This is a death trap right here," David Palmer, a resident, told NBC affiliate WLBT.

"This is beyond a pothole."

Palmer is concerned by the lack of response from the city, which doesn't seem bothered by the stream of complaints from him and his neighbors, according to the homeowner.

At night, neighbors say the chasm is barely visible because the nearest street lamp is broken.

This is one of the many factors that make Palmer's anxiety worse.

"At night time, you know how kids [ride their] bikes," he said.

"They get to pedaling real fast. They [aren't] even gonna see that hole at night."

Another resident, Patricia Barnes, said there's another problem associated with the hole that lacks concern from city officials.

Around the same time the sinkhole appeared, a raw sewage line was flowing and the smell had been permeating from the crater ever since.

"The only thing holding this hole from going all the way across the street is the sewage," she said.

She told reporters that the only action she'd seen from the city was to place barrels around the abyss.

Here's what to do if you car is damaged by a pothole:

However, when reporters arrived, the barrels were inside the pothole.

Otherwise, no markers, signs, warning tape, or any other form of visual warning was seen before the pothole.

"If you not gonna fix it, just close the street off where people can go another direction," Barnes said.

Palmer is worried an accident will have to happen before it's fixed.

"Do somebody have to lose their life in this pothole, in this swamp, in order for the city to come out here and do their job?"

WLBT reached out to the city of Jackson for comment but did not hear back.
