A CITY-owned garage was found to be full of suspected abandoned vehicles hogging prime spots – some had flat tires and layers of dust.

The news coverage sparked a "deep investigation" into the nearly 40 cars left to rot.

By the end of a news outlet's investigation, almost 30 were left with posted warnings to move the cars[/caption]

When Tyree Peters, a runner attending the Rock 'N' Roll Marathon last weekend, came to the Public Square Garage in Nashville, Tennessee, he noticed the vehicle in the ideal spot next to him had a thick layer of dust over it.

Indicating it hadn't moved for quite some time.

The car next to Peters wasn't the only one, either.

Peters began to notice a lot more vehicles that appeared to be abandoned, just sitting and taking up parking spots for locals.

"There was [an abandoned car] right next to me," he told NBC affiliate WSMV.

"It was covered in dust. That's been sitting there a while."

Reporters for WSMV investigated the garage and noticed over 40 vehicles parked in questionable condition in the city-owned and Nashville Downtown Partnership-managed garage.

Some had flat tires or no license plates.

Several had expired registration tags, some as far back as 2012.

Reporters kept an eye on the cars for over a month, and none of them moved or were written tickets for occupying the space.

Mayor Freddie O'Connell has encouraged people to use the garage before, citing cost-effectiveness and valuable location.

"Generally speaking, Metro garages tend to be easy to park in," he said during a roundtable discussion in March.

However, he declined to comment on the garage's occupancy of abandoned vehicles.

"If it was my garage, they'd be gone," said Peters.

To Peters, the abandoned vehicles are costing the city precious revenue that goes back to improving the city.

According to WSMV reporters, monthly storage fees for those vehicles would add up to $5,000 for the one month they were watching the vehicles.

"That is lost revenue, absolutely," he said.

After the investigation took place, reporters found 27 of the 42 cars had warning notices telling owners to remove the vehicles in 30 days or they would be towed.

After reporters contacted the Nashville Downtown Partnership about the vehicles, the agency responded saying "The inquiry prompted a thorough review of overnight cars."

The U.S. Sun has reached out to the Nashville Downtown Partnership for comment.
