A dying row inmate has been executed for murdering a couple together with his cousin – despite his claims of innocence that have been backed by celebrities including Kim Kardashian.
Ivan Cantu, 50, insisted his conviction more than 20 years ago was based mostly on shaky evidence and false testimony. He died by deadly injection at a state penitentiary in Huntsville, Texas, at 6.47pm on Wednesday.
He used his final words to reiterate that he did not fatally shoot his cousin, 27-year-old James Mosqueda, 27, and his cousin's girlfriend, 22-year-old Amy Kitchen, in November 2000.
'I would like you to know that I never killed James and Amy,' Cantu stated to relations and Kitchen's pal who watched by means of a window.
'And if I did, if I knew who did, you'd've been the first to know any info.'
Cantu added that he did not consider his execution 'will convey you closure'.
'If it does, if this is what it takes or have any reservations off in your mind, then so be it,' he stated.
Cantu held his religious adviser's hand whereas strapped to the dying chamber gurney as she prayed. He thanked his supporters and referred to as for his case to be further investigated to show 'I don't belong on this gurney'.
Because the sedative pentobarbital was administered into his body, Cantu started loud night breathing and gasped at the eighth snore. He stopped shifting and was pronounced lifeless 21 minutes later.
Cantu was convicted of murder in 2001. Prosecutors argued that Cantu killed Mosqueda, who was an unlawful drug supplier, and Kitchen whereas making an attempt to steal cocaine, weed and money from his cousin's house in Dallas.
However Cantu claimed that a rival drug supplier murdered his cousin in a battle about cash. Celebrities together with Kardashian, actor Martin Sheen, politicians including Rep Joaquin Castro and former US Housing Secretary Julian Castro, and religion leaders supported efforts to delay Cantu's execution.
After Cantu's execution, Collin County District Lawyer Greg Willis advised CNN: 'My hopeful prayer is for the victims' households, buddies, and loved ones to find a long-awaited sense of peace.'
Cantu is the primary inmate to be executed in Texas this yr.
It happened a day after the execution of serial killer Thomas Eugene Creech, 73,& in Idaho was halted after eight botched lethal injection attempts.
