Pelosi slams White House's War Powers notification on Soleimani strike

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Saturday criticized the White House’s categorized Struggle Powers notification to Congress for the assault that killed Iranian army leader Qassem Soleimani, saying it "raises extra questions than it solutions."

“This document prompts critical and urgent questions concerning the timing, method and justification of the Administration’s determination to interact in hostilities towards Iran,” Pelosi stated in a statement.

Pelosi, who criticized President Donald Trump on Friday for not coming to Congress beforehand, reiterated her call for the White Home to offer a full briefing to lawmakers of the deadly drone strike and the U.S.'s probably deeper involvement within the region.

“This initiation of hostilities was taken without an Authorization for Use of Army Drive (AUMF) towards Iran, without the consultation of the Congress and without the articulation of a transparent and bonafide strategy to either the Congress or the general public,” she added.

Democrats, together with Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut, have criticized Trump for not consulting Congress earlier than killing Soleimani.

“He didn’t seek the advice of. He hasn’t offered notice,” Murphy tweeted Friday. “Subsequent, he'll go to warfare with Iran with out an authorization if Congress doesn’t take drastic steps to drive him into compliance.”

The White House, as required underneath the 1973 Conflict Powers Act, notified Congress on Saturday of its army actions that killed the leader of Iran’s elite paramilitary forces at Baghdad airport on Thursday.

A senior Democratic aide described the notification as each “temporary and inadequate.”

“It's unusual for such a follow when the strike has been publicly acknowledged by the government,” the aide added when asked concerning the White Home’s choice to classify the modification.
