DETROIT (AP) — John Gibson kept up his hot December with 24 saves, Dylan Larkin and Mason Appleton scored goals, and the Detroit Red Wings beat the slumping Winnipeg Jets 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Gibson won for the ninth time in 10 starts as the Red Wings improved to 11-3-1 in December.

The Jets lost their seventh straight game (0-4-3) on a night where Connor Hellebuyck made 17 saves. Logan Stanley scored Winnipeg's goal.

The Red Wings took a 1-0 lead at 8:22 of the first period when Larkin ripped a shot through traffic over Hellebuyck's glove while on the power play. Larkin and Hellebuyck, who grew up a few miles apart in Detroit's western suburbs, are expected to be teammates on Team USA in the upcoming Olympics.

Appleton put the Red Wings ahead 2-0 with 5:12 left in the first, finishing off a two-on-one break with J.T. Compher. Hellebuyck made the initial save, but defenseman Luke Schenn knocked the puck into the net while trying to clear the crease.

Gustav Nyquist nearly made it 2-1 late in the second period against his former team, but hit the crossbar from a sharp angle.

Stanley made it 2-1 at 7:04 of the third with a shot along the ice that seemed to fool Gibson.

Michigan interim coach Biff Poggi said after the team's Citrus Bowl loss to Texas on Wednesday that he will not be back with the Wolverines.

Poggi was been running the program since the firing of Sherrone Moore on Dec. 10. Moore was ousted for allegedly having an improper relationship with a football staffer.

Poggi, 66, confirmed he was a candidate to get the full-time gig during the search process, but days later Michigan hired long-time Utah head man Kyle Whittingham.

The Wolverines lost 41-27 to the Longhorns to end a 9-4 season.

Poggi is highly optimistic over the possibilities for Michigan's 2026 team.

"This isn't a rebuild at all," Poggi said. "That would shortchange the kids, and Coach Whittingham is going to do an amazing job."

During the television broadcast, Whittingham said his coaching staff is nearly filled up for next season.

"We're just about finished," Whittingham said. "It hasn't been announced officially yet. Until somebody's on the dotted line, you never want to get ahead of yourself, but I think we're in good shape. I think we'll have probably about 90% of the staff named this weekend. Then we'll finish off the next one or two over the course of next week."

Poggi served as interim coach for three games this season. He also guided Michigan to a 63-3 win over Central Michigan and a 30-27 victory at Nebraska in September while Moore was serving a two-game suspension for his role in the 2023 sign-stealing scandal.

Poggi just completed his third stint with the Wolverines. He returned to Ann Arbor for this season after being fired as Charlotte's coach after a two-year run.

Poggi was an analyst on the 2016 Michigan staff and was associate head coach in 2021-22 when Jim Harbaugh was the Wolverines' head coach.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Trevon Diggs was claimed by the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday, a day after the Dallas Cowboys waived the 2021 All-Pro cornerback.

This move enables Green Bay to boost its injury-riddled secondary by taking a chance on a two-time Pro Bowl selection seeking a career reset.

Diggs had an NFL-leading 11 interceptions and earned All-Pro honors with Dallas in 2021. He earned a second Pro Bowl selection the following year.

But his production dipped from there as he dealt with two major knee surgeries.

Diggs played six games this season before sustaining a concussion in an accident at home on Oct. 16. Diggs didn't explain the cause of the injury to reporters until two months later, when he said he got hit in the head by a mounting pole while trying to install a TV.

Even after Diggs returned from concussion protocol, he remained off the field and ended up missing eight games. The Cowboys attributed his delayed return to issues regarding his knees.

After Cowboys cornerback DaRon Bland suffered a season-ending foot injury, Diggs returned to action and played against the Los Angeles Chargers and Washington Commanders.

Though Dallas coach Brian Schottenheimer reiterated that Diggs' departure was a culmination of issues and not triggered by one incident, the move came five days after he didn't return from Washington with the team.

The Cowboys played the Commanders on Christmas and had three days off after that Thursday meeting. Schottenheimer said other players asked to make their own travel arrangements going home and were told no. The coach said Diggs didn't ask until the team was in the locker room after the 30-23 victory.

"It was one of many factors. It was not the only factor," said Schottenheimer, who briefly benched Diggs during the six games he played to start the season after the team withheld an offseason workout bonus because Diggs went through rehab on knee surgery with his own training staff away from the facility.

"I'm not the Grinch that stole Christmas, OK? I love Christmas. I love my family. But at the end of the day, we got a protocol we go through, and the process was not followed."

Schottenheimer disagreed with the suggestion that he never connected with Diggs in his first season as a head coach after a quarter-century as an NFL assistant. The son of the late NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer takes pride in his relationships with players.

"Believe me, I don't make these (decisions) casually," Schottenheimer said. "We didn't sit down and say, 'Hey, Trevon didn't take the plane.' No, it wasn't that. It was a culmination of multiple factors. And hey, this might be great for Trevon. Go find a permanent home. That's my hope for him is that he does that."

Green Bay needed a boost at cornerback after placing Kamal Hadden (ankle) and Nate Hobbs (knee) on injured reserve this week. Both players were knocked out of the Packers' 41-24 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday.

The Packers did sign cornerbacks Shemar Bartholomew and Jaylin Simpson from their practice squad to their active roster on Tuesday.

Heading to Green Bay reunites Diggs with injured Packers defensive end Micah Parsons, who was acquired from Dallas just before the start of the season. Parsons and Diggs are good friends who exchanged jerseys after the Packers' 40-all tie with the Cowboys earlier this season.

Green Bay (9-6-1) carries a three-game skid into its regular-season finale Sunday at Minnesota. The Packers have clinched a playoff berth as the NFC's No. 7 seed.

Two New England Patriots players have been charged with assault in the last 36 hours.

Wide receiver Stefon Diggs is facing felony strangulation or suffocation charge as well as misdemeanor assault as of Dec. 30. Defensive lineman Christian Barmore is facing assault and battery charges as of Dec. 31.

Coach Mike Vrabel has the team at 13-3 and fighting for the No. 1 seed in the AFC in his first year in New England. He was asked today about the charges against Diggs and Barmore as the team prepares for Week 18.

"We've been aware of these allegations," Vrabel said. "Yesterday and today isn't the first that we've heard about them. [We] try to do everything in accordance with the league policy and making sure that the league, that we're in compliance with the league."

Vrabel shot down any fears that Diggs and Barmore's legal proceedings would be a distraction for the other players.

"I'm 50 years old, going to be 51, I'm not afraid," Vrabel said. "I love coaching this football team."

The team put out a statement about both players and said the franchise is aware of reports regarding both Diggs and Barmore. The statements did not include comments because both are "ongoing legal matters," a stance Vrabel reiterated through much of his news conference today.

"There's ongoing legal matters," he said. "We've made a statement, we take these allegations seriously and what comes of that, then we'll have another discussion. I don't think we have to jump to any sort of conclusions right now and let the process take its toll."

Vrabel said Barmore likely will not be at practice today due to an illness. As of today, he considers both players available to play against the Miami Dolphins in Week 18.

"I haven't heard anything that would keep either player from the game," Vrabel said. "The NFL hasn't told me anything... I haven't had a call with the NFL."
