Mr. Potato Head first debuted in 1950

Toy historian Tim Walsh opened up about the longstanding toy's history in an episode of Nostalgia Tonight with Joe Sibilia

Walsh explained different points in history where the toy actually became controversial

Mr. Potato Head is no stranger to controversy.

The beloved kids toy turned Toy Story character has a rich history that dates back to World War II. New York artist George Lerner was babysitting when he got the idea to stick sharp objects into vegetables to amuse the children on a rainy day. Toy and game historian Tim Walsh explains that the idea started as a cereal-box premium, but became its own toy when Hasbro expressed interest.

Mr. Potato Head debuted in 1950, but at the time, the toy didn't come with a plastic potato. Asking kids to play with actual food was the toy's first controversy, Walsh explained to Joe Sibilia on Nostalgia Tonight with Joe Sibilia.

"From '50 to '64... you provided the potato. At the time, World War II food rationing was still fresh in parents' minds. So the idea of wasting food with this kit was sort of controversial," he explained.

During those years, one of Mr. Potato Head's signature accessories was a pipe. The toy came about in an era where cigarette smoking was still ubiquitous.

"So famously, I think it was Arnold Schwarzenegger was the head of some sort of fitness committee before he was the governor of California, and he convinced Mr. Potato Head to give up his pipe, along with the Surgeon General," Walsh claimed.

As the late 1980s came about, there was a desire to shift Mr. Potato Head's image. In 1987, in partnership with the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout, Hasbro agreed to stop including a pipe as one of Mr. Potato Head's standard accessories. The focus on health continued into the early 1990s, when Arnold Schwarzenegger and the President's Council on Physical Fitness gave him an award for abandoning the "couch-potato" lifestyle.

During Hasbro's 2021 presentation to investors on Thursday, the toy company announced that the iconic Mr. Potato Head would become a non-gendered toy for kids to transform and customize as they choose.

Hasbro called the line "a celebration of the many faces of families allowing kids to imagine and create their own Potato Head family with 2 large potato bodies, 1 small potato body, and 42 accessories, their potato family can have up to 2 parents, and a baby.

Mr. Potato Head celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2022, introducing elderly versions of Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head to the lineup.

Whether you watch apocalyptic movies to pick up tips for future worst-case scenarios, or just want to see happy endings amidst destruction, you'll find what you're looking for on Netflix. The streamer offers a bountiful supply of end times films, such as the zom-com Zombieland (2009) and the crowd pleaser Independence Day (1996).

It's okay to be anxious about current events, and it's okay to put on a movie about even worse disasters to soothe that anxiety. Entertainment Weekly recommends these 10 apocalyptic films as great options.

28 Years Later (2025)

Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Ian Kelson in '28 Years Later'Credit: Miya Mizuno/Columbia

Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later proves the franchise still has a lot to say. Released 18 years after 28 Weeks Later (2007), the third installment in the postapocalyptic horror series is set on one of the British Isles, where a community has flourished, isolated from the more evolved versions of the infected that still terrorize the region. The film follows 12-year-old Spike (Alfie Williams), who must contend with his mother's growing illness and his father's inability to help her.

Writer Alex Garland and director Danny Boyle reunite for the first time since 28 Days Later (2002), and their collaboration meditates on British culture and isolationism in a post-Brexit, COVID-impacted world. Its own sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, premiered in January. —Ilana Gordon

Bird Box (2018)

Sandra Bullock as Malorie Hayes in 'Bird Box'Credit: Merrick Morton/Netflix

This deeply unsettling Sandra Bullock film finds humanity blindly stumbling to survive after an unseen force drives the bulk of the population to suicide. "It's a thriller about motherhood," director Susanne Bier tells EW. "[Bullock's character is] very forceful, very uncompromising. She's a very contemporary female hero."

EW's critic calls Bird Box "taut and defiantly in the moment." Watch it, and you'll never take the luxury of driving without a blindfold for granted again. —Sara Netzley

Don't Look Up (2021)

Jonah Hill as Jason Orlean, Leonardo DiCaprio as Dr. Randall Mindy, Meryl Streep as President Orlean, and Jennifer Lawrence as Kate Dibiasky in 'Don't Look Up'Credit: Everett

The mega-comet is real, but it's a fame and fake-news apocalypse that ultimately dooms the Earth in Don't Look Up. EW's critic calls the Adam McKay film a "winking indictment of climate-change deniers and alternative-fact peddlers" who are happy to ignore global existential threats as they chase a little more clout. As McKay tells EW, "This movie came from my terror about the climate crisis and the fact that we live in a society that tends to place it as the fourth or fifth news story, or even deny that it's happening, and how horrifying that is, but at the same time [how] preposterously funny."

Don't Look Up stars Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, and, conservatively, a billion other famous faces. (As tempting a target as Earth is for killer comets, McKay's gravitational pull on actors is even stronger.) —S.N.

Godzilla Minus One (2023)

Kuranosuke Susaki as Seiji Akitsu and Godzilla in 'Godzilla Minus One'Credit: Toho International/Courtesy Everett Collection

Godzilla Minus One won the 2024 Oscar for Best Visual Effects, but the film is so much more than a monster movie with incredible CGI. Set in Japan, a country ravaged by the after-effects of World War II, the film follows a failed kamikaze pilot as he is haunted both by his performance during the war and a gargantuan monster with a heat ray capable of razing Tokyo.

A love story disguised as a horror movie, Godzilla Minus One offers stunning performances, a fascinating historical perspective, and — of course — the kind of city-trampling mayhem one would expect when selecting a Godzilla movie. You know they did a good job when the filmmaker has you sympathizing with both the monster and the citizens rallying to defeat it. —I.G.

I Am Mother (2019)

If you like a little sci-fi with your apocalypse, you should meet this Mother. After humanity's extinction, a strange woman (Hilary Swank) upends the life of a teenager raised in an austere postapocalyptic bunker under the care of a maternal robot voiced by Rose Byrne.

Australian filmmaker Grant Sputore's feature debut outing offers a heady mix of rich characters, shifting loyalties, and thought-provoking ideas, along with a fierce performance from Danish actress Clara Rugaard as a young woman grappling with the threat to the only life she's ever known. —S.N.

Independence Day (1996)

Will Smith as Capt. Steven Hiller in 'Independence Day'Credit: 20th Century Fox

Two days before the Fourth of July, an alien mothership enters Earth's atmosphere and dispatches envoys in the form of flying saucers across major cities worldwide. When the aliens attack, killing millions, it's up to satellite engineer David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum), Marine pilot Capt. Steven Hiller (Will Smith), and the President of the United States (Bill Pullman), to lead the world in fighting the alien forces in defense of our freedom — on Independence Day. The cinematic mid-'90s version of wearing an Old Navy American flag T-shirt, Independence Day is worth watching if only to hear the phrase "welcome to Earth," uttered not as a cynical aside, but as a rallying cry. —I.G.

The Midnight Sky (2020)

Felicity Jones as Sully in 'The Midnight Sky'Credit: Netflix

George Clooney directed, co-produced, and starred in The Midnight Sky, which finds his lushly bearded Arctic scientist attempting to prevent a crew of astronauts, including those played by Felicity Jones and David Oyelowo, from returning to Earth, where a global catastrophe awaits them.

Filming took place in Iceland, and the weather proved to be its own mini-catastrophe for Clooney. "It was like 40 below, 60-70-mile-an-hour winds, and it's tricky because you could get lost 15 feet away from the camera," he told EW. "I lost like 25 pounds [for the part], so I was pretty weak in general and I'm also directing a big film and you need energy. I was pretty beat up." —S.N.

Oxygen (2021)

Mélanie Laurent as Elizabeth 'Liz' Hansen in 'Oxygen'Credit: Netflix

A nightmare comes to life for claustrophobics everywhere, Oxygen is a French-language sci-fi film that thinks outside the box in terms of action. At the genesis, an unidentified woman (Mélanie Laurent) awakens in an airtight medical unit, unsure of who or where she is. Interactions with the system's AI — dubbed M.I.L.O. (Medical Interface Liaison Officer) — provide some clarity as to her identity, but no matter what she tries, she cannot escape her prison. As she seeks to understand who placed her in the box and why, truths about her personal life and the current state of the world come into focus — but her search for context is actually a race to outwit the slowly depleting oxygen levels. —I.G.

Train to Busan (2016)

Gong Yoo as Seok-woo in 'Train to Busan'Credit: Everett Collection

The only thing faster than a bullet train is the zombie infection overtaking its passengers. In the South Korean action horror film Train to Busan, Seok-woo (Gong Yoo) is a work-obsessed hedge fund manager and absentee father who agrees to accompany his young daughter Soo-an (Kim Su-an) on a trip from Seoul to Busan so she can spend her birthday with her mother. As the train departs, a sick woman begins transitioning into a zombie — and infecting everyone around her.

Now barreling full-speed across the country, Seok-woo, Soo-an, and the other passengers must find a way to survive the apocalyptic journey. These zombies seem to have studied at the World War Z School of Swarming; they move at the same frenetic speed, aiming to infect everyone in their path. —I.G.

Zombieland (2009)

A fusion of zombie rom-com and roadtrip movie, Zombieland offered a little something for everyone when it came out in 2009. The film stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin as survivors of a national epidemic who meet up on the road and agree to head west together.

Known only to each other by their cities of origin, Columbus (Eisenberg), a former college student; Tallahassee (Harrelson), a zombie-killing aficionado; and sisters Wichita (Stone) and Little Rock (Breslin) find themselves breaking all of their apocalypse rules and trusting each other as they head to California in search of a zombie-free space. As EW's critic at the time writes, "Zombieland is a polished, very funny road picture shaped by wisenheimer cable-TV sensibilities." —I.G.

Ariana Grande is going au naturale.

The singer-actress gave fans a rare glimpse of her natural curly hair in a March 4 Instagram video promoting her cosmetics brand, r.e.m. beauty. In the post, Grande, 32, wears a face mask as she goes through lip products from her purse.

Her shoulder-length, curly brunette hair can be seen in the video, a look she rarely shows off. In October 2025, the Eternal Sunshine singer returned to her natural brunette hair color after three years of being blonde for her role as Glinda in the two Wicked films.

"Guys I'm going through my purse, and I think it's actually crucial that you see — I want you to know how many things in my bag are lip products," said Grande. "Getting ready for work, but that felt important to share."

Grande wears a Focker-in-Law sweater in the clip, teasing her upcoming role in the fourth installment of the Fockers film series. In the film, Grande will star alongside Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Blythe Danner and Skyler Gisondo. The comedy will be released on Nov. 25.

The pop star has gone through several dramatic hair transformations throughout the years. For her role in the Nickelodeon series Victorious, she dyed her hair bright red for years. At the beginning of Grande's pop star career, she became known for wearing her hair in a high ponytail.

"I had to bleach my hair and dye it red every other week for the first 4 years of playing Cat," Grande said in a 2014 Facebook post explaining why she sticks with the same ponytail look. "As one would assume, that completely destroyed my hair."

"I tried wigs, they looked RIDICULOUS. Tried a weave because I am working on a new project and want to try some different looks and literally wanted to rip my scalp off. So as annoying as it is for y'all to have to look at the same hair style all the time, it's all that works for now (AND I'm comfortable for the first time in years)" the post continued.

In a 2020 interview on the Zach Sang Show, Grande further opened up about how she feels about her natural hair.

"My real hair, which is a humongous curly, curly pouf... so few people get to see it. And it's cute, and it reminds me of me as a kid. It's who I am, privately," the "My Hair" singer said. "The curls are definitely something that I don't bring around much."

Grande's Eternal Sunshine tour kicks off in Oakland, Calif., on June 6.

This article contains spoilers for all episodes of Netflix's Vladimir.

Netflix's Vladimir sees Rachel Weisz break the fourth wall in a comedic drama that explores desire, power, and creative inspiration. The eight-episode series, adapted from the 2022 novel by Julia May Jonas, closes with a fiery ending in a nod to the Gothic literature that Weisz's English professor character teaches.

While the series follows the source material closely — Jonas also created the adaptation and wrote several episodes— the finale omits more than a dozen pages from the end of the novel and makes a few other changes to the plot. Below, we break down the main differences between the Vladimir book and TV series.

In both the book and show, Vladimir is narrated by an English professor in her 50s who remains unnamed throughout the entire story. In the book, we meet her as she writes while looking over the titular character as he's asleep in a chair that he's shackled to, without revealing the mysterious circumstances that led the characters to this moment.

We're similarly introduced to Weisz's protagonist as she writes on a notepad and talks about her life before walking over to Vladimir Vladinski (Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy's Leo Woodall), who is asleep and bound to a chair.

Vladimir is a new professor at the upstate New York liberal arts college where the protagonist has taught for years. In the novel, the character is described as 40 years old, but in the show, he is played by 29-year-old Woodall. The protagonist develops a crush on Vladimir that turns into an obsession.

The other main characters from the novel who also appear on the show include the protagonist's husband, John (John Slattery), who is currently under investigation at the college for his relationships with former students, and the couple's daughter, Sid (Ellen Robertson), a lawyer who stays with her parents while going through a rift with her partner, Alexis (Tattiawna Jones).

Vladimir's wife, Cynthia (Jessica Henwick), and David, a colleague with whom the protagonist once had an affair (Veep's Matt Walsh), are also characters in both the book and show.

There is one additional character who isn't in the book: Lila (Kayli Carter), one of John's accusers and a former student of the protagonist. She is one of the women who testifies against John; in the book, the women are unnamed, and none of them testify in person.

The cabin

The seemingly idyllic cabin owned by Weisz's character plays a significant role at the end of the novel, and it's the setting for episodes 7 and 8 in the series. But how the protagonist and Vladimir arrive at the cabin, and what they do there, changes slightly in the adaptation.

In the novel, Vladimir goes willingly to the cabin; on the show, he initially rejects her offer before she convinces him to join her.

Once at the cabin, the book version of Vladimir admits he hasn't read the protagonist's novels. However, in the show, he hands her a copy of her novel, full of highlights and notes.

The series ends with Vladimir, John, and the protagonist all appearing to escape unscathed from the cabin, which catches on fire.

John and the protagonist aren't so lucky in the book; both of them are left with significant third-degree burns following the fire. Vladimir is also outside the cabin when the fire begins, and he runs into the house to save both of them.

The couple, in the book, both spend time in rehabilitation hospitals following the incident, then buy an apartment in Manhattan. Meanwhile, Sid becomes pregnant from her train hookup and raises the baby with Alexis.

The protagonist's writing

In the series, Weisz's character appears to save all the writing she did on notepads, which she eventually turns into a novel about a woman's obsession with an older colleague. In the book, the character's only draft of the book, which was on her computer, is destroyed in the fire. She eventually begins work on a new book.

The book ends with one of John's accusers coming to the protagonist's house and the two of them having a reflective conversation.

But the show ends with the cabin fire and Weisz's character addressing the audience from outside, leaving it ambiguous as to what was real and what was fiction. "You don't believe me?" she asks before turning away. We don't see what happens to the other characters.

Vladimir is streaming now on Netflix.
