Nevada culinary union lays into Sanders supporters after healthcare backlash

A strong hospitality staff union in Nevada accused supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders on Wednesday of “viciously” attacking the group, after it circulated a flier criticizing Sanders’ “Medicare for All” proposal.

The clash between Sanders, who heads into the state’s caucuses subsequent week as the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination, and Culinary Union 226, which represents hospitality staff in Nevada, started earlier this week when the group circulated a flier that compared presidential candidates’ stances on well being care, jobs and immigration.

The flier, obtained by The Nevada Unbiased, conveys approval for the well being care plans of 4 candidates — former Vice President Joe Biden, former Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Ind., Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and the billionaire businessman Tom Steyer — who it says would “shield Culinary Healthcare.”

However Sanders, it says, would “finish Culinary Healthcare” and “require Medicare for All” if elected president.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who has embraced Sanders’ Medicare proposal with a three-year transition period, would “exchange Culinary Healthcare” at the end of the transition period or on the finish of collective bargaining negotiations, the flier says.

The union has but to endorse any of the Democratic presidential hopefuls. But its one-pager was seen as an try and blunt Sanders’ momentum in the state, where scant polling has shown him in the lead, and prompted backlash on-line. The flier’s circulation also coincides with heightened fears among the celebration establishment about placing a self-declared democratic socialist and Medicare for All proponent atop the ticket.

But the group, which boasts 60,000 members from the hospitality business in Las Vegas and Reno and payments itself as the one of the state’s largest well being care shoppers, doubled down on its criticism amid the outcry from supporters of the senator.

“Our union believes that everyone has the best to good healthcare and that healthcare ought to be a proper, not a privilege,” stated Geoconda Argüello-Kline, the group’s secretary-treasurer, including that the union had already negotiated its own health care plan for “what working individuals want.”

Argüello-Kline added: “Staff ought to have the fitting to select to keep the healthcare Culinary Union members have constructed, sacrificed for, and went on strike for six years, 4 months, and 10 days to protect.”

“It’s disappointing that Senator Sanders’ supporters have viciously attacked the Culinary Union and dealing households in Nevada just because our union has offered details on what certain healthcare proposals may do to remove the system of care we have built over eight many years,” she stated, noting that Sanders had participated in Culinary city halls and toured the union’s amenities.

The way forward for union-negotiated well being care plans has been a main point of rivalry surrounding single-payer plans just like the one Sanders and Warren have backed, and has cut up union leaders. Opponents of Medicare for All have argued that such a system would boot union staff off their hard-won insurance policy, with no assure that a single-payer system can be nearly as good.

Sanders has specified that underneath his plan, companies whose staff have union-negotiated coverage would have to renegotiate their contracts if single-payer turned the regulation of the land — and direct any windfall to the workers.
